I'd read that GM's Bill Mitchell and Ford's John Najjar visited the Marineland aquarium together, and were impressed by the appearance of the rays and sharks. Mitchell's vision was realized in '63 Corvette Sting Ray, Najjar's in the 1954 Mercury XM-800 concept car. You can see that while while Mitchell was focused on the "wings" and mouth, the eyes made more of an impression on Najjar.

I always thought the Lincoln was far better looking. However, when I was growing up in the sixties, it was rare to see a 50's Lincoln. There were lots of 50's Cadillac's around.

6:17 Henry Leland was a great admirer of President Lincoln so he named his car company after him. Abraham Lincoln's family crest/coat of arms has a prominent knight's helmet near the top of it, hence the hood ornament and the rear trunk key hole cover were fashioned on that helmet.

Both great cars. The Lincoln has a sleeker more modern design. Both cars said "Money" ! Lincoln was a more understated luxury car than Cadillac. By the time 1958 and 1959 arrived, they BOTH were extreme versions of themselves, but that was true of almost every new car back then. Still love them all. I was 11 in 1956 and a car fan ! I still have a collection of BROCHURES of almost all the cars from 1955 on through the 2000's !

Poor Caddy really needs a paint job. The Lincoln has a very old aftermarket air conditioner, maybe installed right in 1956. Factory air would have been trunk mounted with plastic tubes to vents along the sides of the top (like a modern minivan), and air intake scoops near the top of the fenders on each side. The roof shape of the Lincoln, like a lot of two door hardtops in that era, results in the shortage of room inside. For roomy back seat luxury you would have to get the four door sedan.

You mentioned that there were no backup lights on the Lincoln. You'll notice that there's a wide lip between the edge of the trunk lid and the stainless cove trim. There were cove lights under there, which lit the cove trim when the lights were on. Looked really cool. In between those lights was a wide backup light, which was much brighter than the cove lights. Those were standard on Lincolns. You just can't see them unless you know where to look. There were power brakes. That big, cylindrical thing on the firewall is the air booster. Lincolns had air-boosted power brakes standard beginning in 1938. Cadillacs had hydraulic boosted power brakes. Last thing, the vent windows. Those crank operated vent windows were an exclusive GM feature for many years. No other manufacturers used them, as far as I know. Of course, if the crank malfunctioned, you had an air leak. All the Big Three started offering power vents in the late 50's.

Yes, the Cadillac was a Harley Earle heavy looking rounded design with a lot of styling cues carried over in modified form for many years. The Lincoln was far more modernistic in the Mid Century Modern tradition. Today the Cadillac looks baroque and the Lincoln is a sleek chromey space ship.

Hi Jay. I think I prefer the Lincoln myself. On what you called the torpedoes on the Caddy bumper, they were in the day called Dagmars after a big titted TV personality of the time. Did you notice the absence of wipers on the Caddy and their replacement with yet more chrome bullets? On wind out vent windows, I much prefer not to have them. It's sooo much quicker and simpler to just put the window where you want it.

They are both really great cars I think. The Cadillac to me, looks so heavy and strong and ornate, and really comfortable, and then the Lincoln to me, looks elegant and contemporary, and like the equivalent of the mid-century modern look of the Auto world. if I had to ride in the backseat, I would definitely want to be in the Cadillac, but overall like you said, 5I don't think you can go wrong with either, both are awesome with their own unique features! Overall though, I would definitely choose the Lincoln if I had a choice, it's a beautiful design it looks a whole lot easier to get around in. Cool video thanks! 😎

The 1956 Lincoln Premiere Coupe had a production run of 19,619 units and was the most popular Lincoln model. There also was a less expensive but less popular Capri Coupe. Total production of all 1956 Lincolns (excluding Continental) was about 50,000 units...that was higher sales than any other model year for Lincoln in the 1950s. The 1956 Lincoln won an award from the Industrial Designers Institute for excellence in automotive design. The 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe DeVille had a production run of 25,086 units...but was also offered as a cheaper Series 62 Coupe. Overall length on both coupes was actually 221.9 inches... NOT 214.9 inches which was the length of the short-deck Series 62 4-Door Sedan. The 1956 Cadillac was in the third year of a three year styling cycle (1954, 1955, 1956 Cadillacs look very similar).

@@What.its.like. Neither of the cheaper 1956 Cadillacs and Lincolns look much different on the outside compared to the more expensive DeVille and Premiere models. However, the interiors of all those cheaper models were much plainer (such as the lack of leather).

@@What.its.like. I am unaware of the branding of those leathers. Cheaper Cadillacs and Lincolns usually offered synthetic upholstery (nylon-like and vinyl combinations in bright colors). Wool upholstery was preferred by conservative buyers in some of the more expensive models but was declining in popularity at that time.

I pick the 56 Cadillac over the 56 Lincoln just because that front end has so much more presence than the Lincoln. Although the Lincoln’s hood ornament is jewel like and just beautiful. That 56 Cadillac does not have the original interior, thus takes away from the fact that the original interiors on 56 Cadillacs are much nicer looking and feeling than that of the Lincoln. The Lincoln is definitely the more sleeker car and is very cool as well, but that Caddy is more upright and bold. The Lincoln’s styling isn’t cohesive and you could swear it could have been Plymouth or a De Soto like you said, while the Caddy looks like a Caddy and those bullet bumpers are awesome. Plus that Caddy engine compartment is a tragedy! Where in the hell is the original Eldorado batwing air cleaner?? I hate the custom job on the Cad. BTW a real nice comparison would be a 54-56 Cadillac Fleetwood which have extremely massive interiors more so than any other car I’ve sat in IMHO. They’re 227 inches long with a 133 inch wheelbase. Especially the 56 with the huge chromed quarter panel spears that literally could be used as a weapon!!

the 1956 lincoln headlight bezels are like the "futura" concept car, that became the "batmoble" on t.v.. my "bat-rod" hot rod has the 1956 premier 2 dr. hard top body. but, the drive train and frame is a 1969 t-bird with a 429 cobra jet engine, c-6 auto trans, front power disc brakes. the 1956 body is shortened 20" in the rear fenders and trunk lid, to fit the t-bird floor pans. runs awesome.

You have the wrong dimensions for the Coupe DeVille -- it's 221.9 inches long, only 1 inch shorter than the Lincoln ... 214.9 inches is the length of the Series 62 Sedan, which used the short deck in 1956. (Also it's versus, not "verses." And Premiere, not "Premier.")

The Lincoln is preferable, in my opinion. Newer styling, has all the features optional that Caddy had, and handled much better--more a drivers car. Lincoln had been successful as a cross country racing car in the earlier 50's.

The backup lights on the Lincoln are under the trunk lid shining down onto the bumper, above the Lincoln script, and are visible in your video. Lincoln's transmission was 2-speed in Drive with a kick down lower gear. Cadillac's Hydramatic was a split 2-speed with an unusable 1st, and 3rd was the 'pulling' gear sliding into 4th overdrive.

The Cadillac four speed automatic had a fluid coupling so around the same effect as the three speed torque converter Lincoln transmission, but the Cadillac one is a little more efficient. Neither had lockup at cruising speeds. Very disappointing that you didn't go out for a little spin in each one.

I'd have to choose the Lincoln, mainly because it's more modern in terms of styling and it sits lower, giving it a lower center of gravity for safer handling. While GMs always gave me the impression of being more technically refined, this Cadillac looks antiquated and heapy, sitting on an older than the Lincoln's brand new chassis dating back years earlier. Having owned a 1956 Chevrolet, I find the Cadillac's instrument pod somehow desireable. However, I find the Lincoln's to be more attractive and Californish sunny, because of the instrument cluster's bright color scheme placed upon a more modern-looking dashboard. Dissapointing on the Lincoln is the standard 4-way power seat. If I had to have power seats whatsoever, then it'd have to be either 6-way, like what was offered on the Cadillac, or nothing at all. Besides saving money on Chrome, of which is perfectly okay on this body style, money was annoyingly saved on the Lincoln's vent windows, given the Lincoln's higher sticker price. Even the base Chevrolets had crank operated ones standard. These had the advantage of staying put where you wanted them opened, at high wind speed. If you forgot to lock the Cadillac's vent window through latching its pin, a thief would have a more difficult time trying to pry open that vent window than when the Lincoln's pin got forgotten. The Cadillac's Hydramatic was disappointing and would have had to wait nearly a decade for the automotive industy's most superior Turbo-Hydramatic with Dual-Pitch converter option. A test drive of both would be required, before making a final judgement. I remember my Chevrolet's steering as having been quite precise, giving plenty of feedback. It didn't have power assist like the Cadillac had. So, if the Cadillac didn't have power assist, I could imagine it giving an equally precise road feel like that of my Chevrolet. If the Lincoln's steering was inferior to that of the Cadillac, that would play a decisive role on my decision-taking , if I was forced to choose between both brands

It could be the torque convertor- it could be the trans tuning- the Caddy may have been tuned for smooth shifts which would give up acceleration Not too many Caddy or Lincoln drivers drag racing though Also- Ford usually put a stop into the door hinge mechanism that stopped the door from opening as far as that Lincoln did. When that mechanism broke it would do what that Lincoln did. I think that may be broken on that car, especially since it is very difficult to reach at that angle.

If it was a 53 comparison I’d 100% pick the Caddy but for 56 the Lincoln is far more elegant. The Cadillac design from the early 50s started to look too overdone and bloated in 55 and 56.

That Cadillac probably originally had A/C. But the owner had to go amputate the entire heater unit which probably had the condenser in front of the heater core

Nobody asked, but the Harley Earl designs were getting long in the tooth by 1954, and stale by '56. The Lincoln looks a lot better than the Caddy, and not just because the Caddy needed body work and paint. The elephants absent from the room were Imperial and Packard, either of which I would choose over either the Lincoln or the Cadillac. Imperial's styling was fresher than Packard's and Packard had problems with the Twin Ultramatic transmission. Early '56 Imperials came with the proven two-speed PowerFlite, but later production examples came with the three-speed TorqueFlite. On the other hand, Packard's Torsion Level Ride and Twin Traction differential worked beautifully. Torsion Leve was considered the best handling and riding car in America, and versions of Twin Traction were marketed as Positraction, Sure Grip, and other trade names. The available 374 V8 with a single four-barrel was rated at 290 horsepower, and the available dual-quad 374 was advertised at 310 horses, and some sources claim the 310 was understated. I know of one '56 Packard Executive delivered from the factory with the 374-dual-carb, and three-on-the-tree overdrive, and if such a car were available. even a 352-four-barrel Clipper or Executive, that would be my choice. Again, nobody asked, but money no object, that would be my choice.

Whoever told you that backup lights were optional on a 56 Lincoln was mistaken. The 56 Lincoln was known for its downward facing backup lights under the lip of the trunk lid.

A Collectible Automobile magazine article on the '56-'57 Lincoln described the night the 56 was introduced to national dealers at Detroit's Masonic Temple. It began with The Detroit Boys Choir and orchestra singing and snapping their fingers to the song, "What's New?" Slowly a Wisteria & White '56 Lincoln Premier Convertible rose from underneath the stage floor and started revolving on its circular platform. They wrote that dealer applause was deafening. Lincoln offered Life Guard safety items including padded dash, padded sunvisors, deep dished steering wheel as standard equipment. Buyers could add front seat belts. Julia Meade, the spokesperson for Lincoln, appeared on Ed Sullivan's TV show, which was sponsored by Lincoln, to advertise the car. You Tube has posted some of the original commercials. While driving home from the studio one evening, Mr. Sullivan was involved in a serious accident in his '56 Premier, yet he credited the engineering for saving his life and was given another one. Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr lost his eye to the steering wheel hub of his Cadillac in an accident. Shortly thereafter, Cadillac dished their steering wheels too. For '56 Cadillac switched from '55's Hydro-Vac to Delco Moraine brakes and made changes to their automatic transmissions. Both became problematic with customers and were quickly redesigned for '57. When I lived in San Francisco, I bought a Robin's Egg Blue & White '55 Coupe de Ville. It was like a living room on wheels and the trunk would swallow anything with room to spare. ( badly designed ignition chrome, with Buicks small Key developed pain on my Thumb and fore finger starting her everytime)We have recently seen a 1956 Lincoln Capri offered for sale, reason why me and my brother checked out this episode and also the one you had on the 1954 New Yorker, one we saw is a Deluxe and offered for sale in the same location as the Lincoln Capri. Just love the styling and we noticed how much Packard it looks, the exhaust on the Capri are thru the bumper, nothing modified, doesn,t have power windows, me and my brother don,t like too much whistle and bells on vintage cars, just styling and practicality specially controls and gauge placement on Dash, easy to see and get to , inside and out, comfortability and the most important """DEPENDABILITY""" on that engine, able to drive out on a Sunday drive 80 miles to a Park or Beach and drive back home 80 miles without engine problems( reason why we like 318s, we are ""NOT SURE ON 1950s LINCOLN ENGINES""") we like them simple and not cluttered, engine,trans,battery,oil air possibly Power Brakes and thats it, don,t care for air condition or too many switches since that over works the engine. The Cadillac screams 50’s, 50’s, 50’s chrome everywhere opulence. But that’s Cadillac. The Lincoln looks 50’s but in a sleeker, cleaner more modern way. I would bet the Cadillac outsold the Lincoln. You didn’t do buttons, switches and knobs. The Lincoln dash is similar to the Mark II

Cadillac DID outsell Lincoln in '56. Cadillac absolutely DOMINATED the US luxury car market after WW2. Even IF in certain years the competition was better,(I could argue that Imperial was better in '56 than Cadillac or Lincoln). GM was at its peak in those years in terms of market share, They could sell as many Caddys as they could make. Even the highly regarded '61-up Continental was STOMPED in overall sales by Cadillac. In the 50s and 60s l, Cadillac was an unstoppable cash cow for GM. Only in the 70s would Cadillac be threatened (by the likes of Mercedes). When the 85 FWD DeVille came along, Lincoln had it's moment when many DeVille shoppers jumped to the Town Car to get a traditional American luxury car.

The Cadillac had very dated styling and looked like a frumpy old car. The torpedoes on the Cadillac are more commonly called "Dagmars". The lincoln was more up to date and had a futuristic look. The writing on the wall came from the exaggerated styling of the Lincoln Futura(which became the Batmobile). Longer and lower was the modern look. This was the point of the Packard Caribbeans styling. The jet age was well underway and cars began to show it. That was the purpose of tail fins and through the rear bumper exhaust. Cadillac fins continued and grew. Whereas most cars shed the tail fins after a few years, Cadillac kept tail fins to this day, although they are just a hint of a tail fin which might just be a slightly raised section on top of the rear quarter panels. The Cadillac's automatic Hydramatic is a fluid coupling transmission, with the purpose of the extra-low 1st gear was used just to get the car rolling. It could be related to a manual transmission with a slipping clutch. There was quite a bit of power loss with the Hydramatic. The Lincoln had a 3-speed "Turbo-Drive" automatic which normally started in 2nd gear. Because of a torque converter this worked. It is the same principle of the Buick Dynaflow automatic. It was a non-shifting automatic, with a torque converter and in the "Drive" position, started up and remained in hi gear. Only a manual downshift to "Low" could engage the low gear. With the Lincoln, when starting off from a stop, pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor caused the transmission to automatically downshift to 1st gear and then automatically upshift, depending on speed and load. From the start-up, the torque converter increased torque, delivering that torque to the drive wheels. Effectively, this created a super low 1st gear and multiplied the engine torque multiple times, sending more power to the drive wheels. Starting up normally and then 'flooring it' after a few seconds also would kick it down into 1st gear acting as a passing gear does. With each upshift under power, the torque converter would give a split second of boost. Buick also took advantage of extra boost when they introduced the variable pitch stator in their torque converters. This gave and extra boost of power at any speed, when the accelerator pedal was pressed 3/4 or more. The feature was electrically controlled through a 3-position switch and a solenoid. With no pressure on the pedal, the stator was in the reduction mode(switch energized), giving a quicker take-off. At cruise, the switch was de-energized. When the pedal was pressed 3/4 or more, the switch was energized. This feature was used in the ST400 and ST300 through atleast the 1967 model year. As these automatic transmissions had 2 internal solenoids, one was for the stator and the other for passing gear. This dual feature was the reason, when engines had equal power, a car with an ST400 or 300 would leave a car with a TH400 and Powerglide in the dust.
