"In August 1937, Pierce-Arrow announced plans to raise $10.7 million through a stock sale to produce 25,000 medium-priced cars, plus 4,800 trailers, and 1,200 luxury models" [Encyclopedia of American Cars 1930-1980]. This plan fell through and Pierce-Arrow declared bankruptcy in December 1937 and was liquidated in 1938. This was bad timing because the Department of War (now DOD) spread around lucrative defense contracts in 1939 in anticipation of World War II.

Im a Buffalo native and a big PA fan. The main Pierce-Arrow plant on Elmwood Ave and the PA administration building still exists as high-end apartments and light industrial space. The flagship Pierce-Arrow showroom is maintained in it's art-deco splendor on Main St and Jewett Parkway, two blocks east of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin complex. The Pierce-Arrow museum is located downtown and houses a full-size Frank Lloyd Wright gas station once proposed for Tydol gasoline. The museum isn't far from many other attractions like CanalSide and Larkinville, Louis Sullivan's masterpiece early skyscraper; the Guarantee building, and Buffalo City Hall, a massive 39 story art-deco masterpiece with it's polychrome terra cotta exterior and breathtaking viees of Buffalo's waterfront and Lake Erie and Canada just beyond. With so many historic places, It's worth the trip to Buffalo....and to Niagara Falls, a mere 20 minutes away by car.

Pierce Arrow was one of the finest automobiles. Years ago, I was in Las Vegas and visited the Car Museum at the Imperial Pallace. There was a 4 door Sedan that I have never seen before. It was painted à Purple and Lavender with matching interior. The most unique part was a triangular shaped Split window slightly above the rear window. Magnificently restored. One glorious automobile for sure.

Great tour of a truly supurb vehicle. Peak American automobile; only topped by Duesenburg. Those molded fender-mounted headlights were a patented feature of PA's from 1914. I've only ever seen one: a Silver Arrow, in "Barn-Find" condition, on a trailer going the other way... an almost surreal carspotting moment. Felt like I'd just seen Elvis.

Seeing a silver arrow would be a highlight of my month those cars are very rarely seen I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in person, that to me resembles a silver ghost not what Rolls-Royce made, rolls-Royce still looked old at this point, And to be fair most English cars even looked old but a 50 MG was still making boxy cars in the early 50s
@basilhatte
@basilhatte Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. Quite so. The original Silver Ghost was mos; def' a benchmark car, but it was only after the war that they attained their "top of the heap" status. The snark on the Silver Cloud ('55-'64) is that it was the best car of 1941. Rolllers were known as a "triumph of engineering over design". Of the 3 P's, Rolls was competive with Packard, in both design and quality; the other 2 were actually superior. Not to mention Marmon and of course, Duesenburg; there was a time when Detroit really did build "World Cars".

Packards every time ! The Packard 12 was the original 'Torque Monster' , and it was also reliable , straightforward and super smooth - It deserved its nic name 'The Boss of the Road ' Interestingly , rival Peerless designed a SIXTEEN cylinder in 1931 , just before they got out of the car business . One was built , a beautiful black sedan , which still exists today. Only Cadillac , Marmon and Peerless built 16 cylinder engines for road going cars in the classic years.

That's a bit myopic. No one made better straight eights and V-12s than Pierce-Arrow. The Pierce 385-ci straight eight was used without change other than twin-ignition mandatory in emergency equipment through 1958 by Seagraves fire apparatus, Pierce's 462-ci was enlarged to 530-ci, given twin ignition, and used in Seagraves fire trucks through 1 9 7 0. Packard's chassis was a trace more modern, but Packard and Pierce were equals. Packard was not "better." Packard owned up to 42% of the fine car market (above $2,000 base FOB) through 1936 because of their crisp styling as well as overall refinement. And if you want to split hairs, the big Lincoln Ks of the '30s, while not being as powerful as Packard and Pierce V-12s, had the finest craftsmanship of any of the big luxe cars from either side of the Atlantic or Channel. Know the cars, not the advertising and what you glean from dated buff coffee table books. Study the cars up close, underneath, read the shop manuals, talk to those who've owned, worked on b o t h.

Thanks Mike@@mikescott5624- always interesting to see different opinions , and some of those specs on Fire Trucks were new to me . ( I'm a Car Guy ). Only straight eight I ever personally encountered in a working Fire Truck (at a Fire Site ) , was many many years ago . It was an impressive looking and very smooth running black and silver Rolls Royce , powering some kind of auxiliary equipment - the revs would occasionally change . I think the Fire Truck was made by 'Dennis' . Hood sides were open , giving a good view to a curious kid. And ,yes , I do look at and enjoy vintage advertising whenever I can . Technical specs are interesting and essential to tell us HOW things were built . To understand WHY is another matter . To me , the old adverts provide some clues .They give fascinating and colorful insights into very different Times - a world gone by . Some of the content is nonsense of course , but some is Gold .

What is unusual for the era, this car has a single piece windshield when most cars had a split windshield. I seem to remember that in Tom Braden's book "Eight Is Enough". the family car was a Pierce Arrow and the whole family could fit in it. Often cars of this era had dips in the middle of the front bumpers because they could still be hand crank started. You'll probably find that the badge at the base of the grille is covering the crank hole. Rolls Royce was underpowered compared to the other 2 cars, but it is cool and people could tell from a distance that they were looking at a Rolls Royce. It's a toss-up for me in choosing only one of the 3 cars. But with American enginuity pull the six from the RR and replace it with the Packard V12.

You missed out on the deal of a lifetime those things are going for a really big money now those rolls Royces I just don’t understand it they aren’t that great in my opinion Packard pierce arrow is far better quality everything feels so cheap it’s gonna break in your hand when you touch it Bentley is kind of sort of the same way it’s just very fragile. It doesn’t have the same quality feel as a Packard or a pierce arrow when you touch anything in those cars in the Packard or pierce arrow it feels solid. I opened up a door to a 1933 Bentley and it just didn’t feel quality... i’m probably going to get a whole Lot of hate for that but maybe one day I can compare
@automatedelectronics6062
@automatedelectronics6062 Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. Bentleys started out as a performance and sporting and racing car, kinda the Pontiac GTO of the day. After merging with RR they were turned into a RR clone. In our lifetimes, they sought to differentiate Bentley from RR and bring the brand back to it's original performance glory. Although with all the physical characteristics in common, except the grille, they created the Bentley Turbo R. Just think about it. A 6,000 pound car that went 0-60 in 5 seconds! Heck, the average U.S. full-size car was lucky to do that in 10 seconds! Cadillac, which used to be the standard of the world, couldn't even get out of it's own way. As I stated, you could tell that you were looking at a RR, from even a glance. In modern times, when RR and Bentley split, Bentley, under VW ownership, retained the traditional Crewe plant and stuck with the same old cars for awhile. Gradually, they regained their performance image and could dish it out. RR, taken over by BMW, had to start from scratch. They did borrow from Bentley for awhile but then came out with all-new cars from the ground up. One look and you know you are in the presence of the top luxury car in the world. It's true that Packard was once viewed as equal to RR, but being technologically superior. Cadillac was once viewed as the standard of the world and the luxury brand all other brands based their upper level cars on. Packard switched it's sights to competing with Cadillac, but was a little too late in doing so. Rolls-Royce took over as the standard of the world and created a brand familiarity look, eventhough racing ahead in technology but retaining the build quality too. Rolls-Royce cars have always been sought after, retaining the hand-built, coach-built exclusivity. In recent times, the TV show NOS4A2, featuring a 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith, may have re-ignited interest in vintage RR's.

The headlights are so beautifully incorporated into the mudguards. (Fenders are guitars in Australia) The overall treatment of the vehicle is remarkable in its detailing and design, which clearly has not a single line existing by chance. Purposeful design is always engaging and is always evident in the finest integrated vehicles, irrespective of manufacturer. It is such a shame that the centre hub of the steering wheel is missing. The design would have been notable, I'm sure.

@@carywest9256 when an area twice the size of Texas isn't on fire, we have the vast majority of the place completely under water. We never fuck around in Australia. Roasting or flooding seem to be the default settings. Sometimes it can get dusty, which is usually accompanied by mice plagues. Then when you're driving at night, it looks like a very strong wind is blowing leaves across the road. Except there is no wind, it is just mice scurrying across the road. We used to get rabbit plagues the same way, until they developed a biological agent which fucked with their breeding cycle. So that is now gone. A real shame in some ways because hobos would live off their meat and also sell them door to door. For around 20 cents each. 2 decent sized rabbits were a great meal for a family, as I recall.

He still has that same truck today parked in a garage at home.!! Got to ride in it many times back in the early 1970's and into the early 1980's.!! It was one of the later models. IT was the best looking body style of all model year Studebakers ever built.!! THANKS for the happy memories and all the sacrifices you have to make to bring us these machinery MARVELS.!!! Most of these magnificent cars got driven into ground the during the 40s and 50s; expensive to maintain and lacking manufacturer's support. Dastardly things were done to some as they aged, like cutting the front off to use the engine to drive irrigation pumps, etc. It is unfortunate so few have survived. Newer cars offering automatic transmissions, power steering, air conditioning, etc didn't help the classics of the 30s either.

My grandfather attended high school in the mid-1920s. He told me that he took a shop class that had an old Pierce Arrow. Many of those luxury cars ended up as tow trucks as they got older because the chassis was so robust and the engine had great torque. Remember that in the pre-WWII years, the lifespan of a new car was typically about 8-10 years. Collecting old cars as a hobby was not widely done until the early 1950s.

Thanks so much for this video, as I didn't know much about them. This car was sold when I did it I just didn’t wanna miss the opportunity to do appears arrow I’m not sure when I will get another chance to do so this car was there the very first time that I ever went to classic automotive I’ve been to classic automotive five times since then. I generally go once a month maybe twice a month and I try to shoot between 15 and 25 cars in one day. I can’t find the advertisement either but I don’t think that they were asking a fortune for this car I think it was under six-figure I think they were asking around 70 I’m not 100% certain now but this car has some minor flaws as you saw in the video does not have the tire cases which kind of sort of makes up on a bed naked. Archer ornament is broke questionable whether the B12 is supposed to be in there because pictures show an aluminum head the 12 where this one didn’t have an aluminum head because it was painted black I mean they do make paint that here’s to aluminum but generally when aluminum gets hot the paint doesn’t look like that, could be wrong

At 2.893 KG, that is an amazingly heavy vehicle. Almost 3 tonnes. A modern Japanese Limousine styled car is around 1.3~1.8 tonnes. Irrespective of how many cylinders it has, 8.12 or 16, it will guzzle fuel at an incredible rate, simply to move itself down the road. With 3 passengers and luggage, you would easily exceed 3 tonnes, which is a U-Haul truck, without the carrying capacity.

What’s the purpose of having something if you can’t enjoy it. My parents have always been about Hugo mileage cars my dad bought a low mileage dodge truck that we found out with a snowplow truck and it turned out to be a total turd I mean it only had 50,000 miles on it but everything needed replaced eventually because it sat forever. The last couple vehicles that I’ve had have been hard mileage vehicles and I haven’t had any issues with them I owned a couple cars that had no miles on them and they had a lot of problems because nobody drove them, and they just sat. I’m a firm believer in they have to be driven. I don’t usually look at miles when I’m looking at a Classic Car I look at structural integrity and rust..

Yes, the grill does open and close. It closes for winter so ice cold air does not impede the engine from warming up and producing heat for the passengers. The hood doors serve the same purpose. These cars did not have the pressurized cooling systems of today. Even in the early 1970s people would put cardboard in front of the radiator behind the grill to warm the engine up quicker in very cold weather. Have you ever noticed that there were no ugly 1934 or `35 cars? BTW 1948 and 1949 Hudsons had twin glove compartments. Does the museum have a Marmon 16?

@@What.its.like. My guess is that it was a natural evolution for most of the truly big cars of the day. Packard, Duesenberg, Lincoln, Marmon et al had the feature. It was hard enough warming up an in line 4 or 6 cylinder engine back then. Imagine heating up a huge straight eight, a V12 or 16. They all used 30 weight non detergent motor oil back then which would be like cold molasses in northern climes like Detroit, New York, Boston and Chicago. I am pleased that you have an interest in these cars. I have always loved cars. One of my fondest memories is from high school. I was in the Grand Opening Parade of Disney World in October 1971. The parade included very rare brass age cars such as Simplex, Locomobile and Saxon. I learned about them from their WW1 age owners. You are getting a good education by making these videos. The Hudson Rambler front end reminds me so much of a GMH product of the late 50s, referred to as the FC model. GM Holden were given American cars with plans, and built them as instructed by Detroit, even though we were treated as a back water, with GMH still producing 50s era cars till the mid 60s. They failed with their FB model, with its wrap around windscreen and back glass, not so much because it was ugly, but that it was very obviously a 50s design being foisted on us. An emulation of perhaps a smaller 57 era American car. We had ready access to better looking British vehicles, and that did win out often. For example, they were competing against the likes of the Morris range, the Morris minor, the mini Minor, and best of all the Morris numbered series, starting with the 1100, which introduced Hydroelastic suspension in a smaller car with excellent space inside. The Morris 1800 used the same suspension, and it seemed to have far more interior room than any car I can think of. Both vehicles were front-wheel drive, leaving a vast space for front and rear seat passengers. The rear in particular felt more limousine like, in that the seating was very far back. The Triumph cars were also popular, as was Jaguar, in both Saloon and E-type configurations. The British vehicles were under the umbrella of Leyland Australia, which manufactured most of them, though not the Jaguar range. This made them more competitive, as high duties were imposed on imported cars. This policy went on to create a significant manufacturing base for many Japanese, French and American brands. In short, it drove employment (no globalisation) and gave us a very wide diversity of European and American cars, all made here and tested under our road conditions. A practice which continues for all the major manufacturers. Our overall road situation, outside urban areas and the large networks of freeways and connecting highways between major cities, is excellent; however, anything too far beyond that, quickly degenerates into heavily rutted and corrugated dirt roads, which at best are only bulldozed once a year. Our very frequent flooding events also destroy significant portions of the very high quality roads, by carrying them away, along with any bridges.

The Volvo P1800 is a car which has always interested me. Roger Moore of 007 fame, was a British actor who had a series called 'The Saint' during the 60s, in which he drove his personal P1800, they were also a few of them in my neighbourhood, so still a relatively rare car then, for Australia. I lived just between the international airport and the much older, former international airport, and many pilots had opted to move here, sometimes bringing their families and cars. (the Volvo was ideally suited at that time, as it was R/H drive directly from the factory.) It has svelte lines like a typical sports car of the era, though I do not know its true credentials as such.

The 34 offering is just as difficult - a productionized 34 version of the Silver Arrow or a mildly custom (blank rear quarters) Packard Aerocoupe - oy. I'll go with the Pierce Arrow this time. 8:12 Ain't it funny how the color I would call coined ''Turned Off TV Screen Green'' of many shades; have been brought back into play the last 5 years? 8:27 They may have been better served if located on the front-most protrusion of each fender in order to signal side traffic... but why the hell should I pop off; I choose to use hand & arm signals when in my two daily drivers; '53 3100 Pickup & '68 Triumph 650 Trophy Sports!

I wish I could show the keys every time I didn’t have access to these keys and a lot of times I’m finding out that the key is I shot an AMC gremlin yesterday. I took the key out of the ignition, And the key was from a blank GM key it didn’t look anything like Amc Key it looks like a GM key from the 80s

Pierce-Arrow was not the first with vacuum assisted brakes in 1936. Hupmobile featured vacuum assisted brakes on their 527-T model. I own one of these. They may not even be the first with them.

I am sorry, but you are wrong about how Packard owners feel about the 110, 115 and 120 models. These are fine cars and no Packard owner would ever say that they were not a real Packard. In fact, a lot of wealthy Packard afficionados bought 120s because the performance wasn't appreciably less than that of the senior Packards. Many of my friends own both senior (Twelve, 160, 180) Packards and also own 120s and 115s. This same kind of blame game hit the Clippers as well. Clippers were VERY successful when they were introduced in 1941 and would have continued to had World War II not shut down production.

I’m talking about the more snooty Packard owners I personally love the 115 and 120 series because it’s not over the top some of them super eight and 12 they get to be a bit much. I reviewed a 115 see business coupe and some of the comments I got “well that’s not even a real Packard” I personally love all packard from the 1936 to 1942 era

Packard...and Packard. When the Studebaker-Packard merger was in talks, many Packard shareholders were dead set against the merger. Some felt Studebaker had hastened Pierce-Arrows dismiss, and as it turned out both lasted only 4 and 5 years. But, Studebaker met its match with Mercedes Benz which sucked up all the Studebaker dealerships and left it for dead.

Of course, I appreciate ALL Pierce-Arrows, but I much prefer the '36s & later, because ALL cars were moving from the sharp-lines of the early-mid-30s to the softer shapes of '36 and Beyond. If back then, and I had the.funds, my choice'd be a V-12 powered "Silver-Arrow", but I would've wanted an Custom, all-wood body with maple-framing and red-wood panels, looking vaguely like the "barrel-shaped-rear" of Nash Ambassador Sedan that had a "Woody" Body up until '48. I'd want the "Shapes" of the Silver-Arrow, but done in Wood, rather than Steel. If living in Arizona, I probably would have "fought-with" and maybe "Lost" to termites, which in Arizona, are NOT, "If", but "When." You can turn-up your nose at the "Kenosha-Duesenburg", --the Nash Ambassador, but Charlie Nash ALWAYS made a Profit, even in the Depths of the Depression,{'36} that Killed storied marques like Pierce.

A very interesting brand. Pierce Arrow automobiles were featured in two Hollywood movies that I know of, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (a red roadster) and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN (1950s version). This brand was noted for having the first integrated into the fender headlights, in the 1920s, long before other automakers... that is until the Chrysler Air Flow. Pierce Arrow made the mistake of not having an entry or mid-level priced model, for during the Great Depression large, expensive cars were scorned by the general public as examples of excessive consumption by the rich. Here's a thought: I wonder if our present economy continues to go sour, will expensive luxury brands such as Tesla, Polestar, and Rivian will suffer a similar level of disdain?

I don’t know people are a lot more arrogant now it seems, Tesla offers a entry-level car the model three.. sort of entry level. Everything has just gotten so expensive that’s why I do the price comparison point because a lot of times there isn’t anything that’s equivalent, some things just can’t be evaluated like there was less money and less people on the planet back in there and there is now their way more money physical money on the planet now but there’s also way more people on the planet now. It will be interesting that’s for sure. I have a big thing for the Chrysler airflow I really want to review that car I really wanna buy one I don’t have the money to buy one but they’re actually really affordable and that’s a classic car that you could use every day I read that they get really good gas mileage like upwards of 34 miles to the gallon with a flathead six and I would love to test all of that. I have a really big goal that I would like to do in the next few years I would love to be able to afford like 37 Packard or Chrysler airflow. Get to see it’s plastic wrapped take it to every car so that I can possibly go to in share it with everybody and I mean everybody, offer rides especially to the younger people we gotta get more people in this car hobby.

These cars just prove that if you had the money in the day what you could have. Even a lot of modern type home appliances. Rich people had TV in the early thirties. The big difference is what working people got paid and what could be bought on their incomes. If you made five thousand dollars in 1935 it is like 110,969.12 today. But most people made less than $3000 a year. Now it is best to be on entitlements or a trust fund baby if you want to have a home. Home prices are totally out of reach unless you live in an economically dead area. But if you are on entitlements or a trust fund baby get one for free or have grand dad pay for it. My grandfather made $16 a week in the mines and got a company home. You were paid with script which could only be spent in the company store. Company housing will probably be a wave of the future again as most home, automobile and living expenses are out pacing income. It took WWII to truly get the USA out of the depression. And the soldiers were rewarded with factory jobs and the ability to take on debt as a consumer of products and services.

.....the Silver Arrow is strikingly attractive, partially due to its 2-tone paint, chrome wheels, and wide whites.....but that '34 Packard is next-worldly....the '36 Pierce Arrow was an extremely expensive car.... which I think the '36 Packard equaled, or exceeded it for less money....
