Hi Gaz , what an incredible job ! Those guys are genius engineers. I'm another Gary ( named after Gary Cooper....can you believe it?😂) and a fan of your channel from Australia. I mentioned our Country Buggy to you guys a couple of weeks ago and I thought you might find this oddity interesting , (even if you may have seen this "fix" before )....the Buggy has a real dodgy set up going on , my dad must have done it years ago. It has had a second drive pulley welded to the original pulley and off that he has put a belt up to an alternator ( probably from an old Valiant) that is mounted on a bracket welded to the top of the old dynamo. I can only imagine that it was an easier fix here in Australia than mail-ordering a new dynamo from Germany . Being a "bush mechanic" he did what he had to do to keep rolling....and it still works years later ! We tried to upload pics of the Buggy as you requested for your Facebook page but couldn't manage the link for some reason ?? We ain't real smart down here 😀😀 Thanks for your content , it always brings a smile to our faces and brings back fond memories of a trip to Texas 20 years ago. See ya mate 👍👍

That used to be a thing. Back in the 1980's you could also have your aircooled BMW boxer bike converted to twin plugs ( i think it was Krauser who did those conversions) And i personally owned a Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 that was aircooled + twin spark from the factory. It used 4 coils in a wasted spark setup. That bike pulled like a freight train.

That 16 Valve Scirocco is awesome! I had an '85 Scirocco Turbo [yes, Volkswagen made them, a total of 52 by the way, sold by the dealers and the turbo system was included in the factory warranty] and it was an utterly solid car. It was solid because it was actually a four-door Mk1 Golf chassis taken off the regular production line in Wolfsburg and sent to Karmann in Osnabruck, where it was further strengthened so that it could be a convertible. But instead it received a Scirocco body....Meaning it was ridiculously overbuilt!

Mechanical multiple spark discharge! That even sounds great to say 😄 If this came out in the day, the beetle would have been made at the factory. Man, that would be waaaay ahead of its time by far. And... AND some weird progressive carb setup using the idea of a single carb for slow speeds and twin carbs for those high speeds. Mind-blowing.... is all I can say. Genius man. But so very much VW ownership is the essence of why this guy owns it. Inspirational to say the least. Awesome video as always.

On an aircraft engine with dual plugs,one of the run up tests before taking off is "dropping a mag" and seeing for an rpm decrease of 50-150rpms when you shut off either the right or left mag(you run on both normally). Anyways,that should tell you (sort of) if spark power changes horsepower. Of course an aircraft engine runs pig rich to blow fuel thru it for cooling but still it's food for thought.

Frankie's two outside carbs if for a Crosley (American made car from the 40s and 50s) are probably US made. For you info the Crosley engine was actually use as an aircraft engine in the original Mooney Mite. The MM was a single place low wing retractable aircraft built in Texas.

Love your channel, I have been a VW addict since 1991 when I bought my first bug. It was a 1977 beetle and it was not running at all. I was fresh out of high school and knew very little about car let alone air cooled VW engines…. Several months and a stack of manuals and I had a freshly build 1600. I replaced everything except the block and heads but it ran sooo smooth… that was when the addiction started. So I opened my own VW restore shop and I was super busy lol. So 26 bugs later, 7 buses, and a notch back later. Here I am. Unfortunately they are all gone now(life issues). Dying to get back into the life. Do you guys sell any of that sweet swag I see you guys using. Magnets, stickers, shirts? I’d love to buy some.

How is his registration due in 27. Texas requires inspection and registration on an annual basis. It seems to me cops would pull him over for a fake sticker. The car itself is awesome. A true work of engineering art. The tri-power setup would be a great way to go on most VW's. The duel plugs are a bit much. But to each their own. The continued adaptation of these classics is just more proof that we must keep them alive and on the road.

So....He made the twin distributor body himself. Why? Bosch sells a part that was used on the Porsche 928S2. This part, Porsche part number 928.602.532.0R, allows twin four cylinder 944 distributors to be installed in place of the single 8 cylinder 928 distributor. They built this part so that they could install fully electronic 32 valve ignition on the 16 valve cars sold outside of the United States without redesigning the 16 valve head, which was shortly to go out of production. The part in question uses a tiny cogged belt to drive the second distributor off of the first, which is driven by the drivers side camshaft. Bentley eventually used the exact same Porsche/Bosch part on the Arnage coupes. I'm surprised this guy didn't realize this part exists, since it would be easy to modify it to fit the Type 1 engine.
@VWLifeVW2 жыл бұрын
Interesting!
@Flies2FLL2 жыл бұрын
@@VWLifeVW They went to twin four cylinder distributors because this allows the rotor to have a huge contact area, nearly 20 mm across. This wasn't possible with a single distributor, it would wind up looking like a pizza. All this is because on the EZF ignition system the '84-'86 928S2/US model '85 and '86 32 valve 928S cars the COMPUTER decided when the spark would occur....Not just because the rotor contact met the cap contact, which is the traditional way and how the earlier 928 with vacuum and centrifugal advance did it. When I first saw this video, I was sure that this was the part, but then saw "Bosch" embossed on the side and the screws and realized that this was something else that had been hand built.

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classic busses will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!
