This one is a little long, but I put that down to having to speak slower as speaking all fast and chipper really doesn't work with this game. Also had some weird audio issues, will figure out what they are and try to improve them. So, This War of Mine. Great game or terrible depressing monstrosity?

@MrRedxarcher I know right? After one round of Robinson Crusoe, I'm always like "That's it! We are all gonna die...". I don't know why but that game is crushing. You feel so helpless most of the time. It's the kind of feeling I would have expected more from a Lovecraftian game! ;D

Great review Jarrod! Another game that's very high on my wish list. Tom Vasel compared it to Robinson Crusoe as another coop survival game - only grittier. As I love the former, I'm pretty sure I would enjoy this one as well. Thx!

This review is several years old; however, so very much relevant with the current Ukraine War. Your somber tone in your commentary and editing is very much appreciated. I don't want to put "words in your mouth" but I do think your choice in editing this video is meant as, "it doesn't matter how many years have passed" there will always be a political conflict that will continue to cause the death and hardships of innocent bystanders trying to survive. It is a harsh/somber reality that this game tries to educate people of.

Very much so. I like that it presents that moment honestly and thoughfully though. Far too many games about war gloss over things. This one does not.

1:27 Couldn't quite hear you. "Take Day actions, a character may only act as many times as......?" I don't understand the example as to how many actions characters get?

Yeah, poor audio on these early vids. The number of white dots is the number of actions you can take. If all your statuses show 3, you can take all 3, but if even 1 of them only shows 1, you can only take 1 action.

I love the video game and play it through every few months and love the challenge and the stories it makes. I also really like dead of winter (though my game group doesn't seem to as I can't get it to the table very often) with the narrative cross roads cards being one of my favorite parts so I could see myself loving this game as the dark themes don't bother me so much but enhance the story which is one of my favorite parts of games. As I've watched your channel I've found that you and I have very similar tastes in games and I own or play most of the same games that you love (chaos in the old world, many games workshop games with Necromunda being my current favorite probably cause of the story driven campaign, etc) Can I ask just how similar are This War of Mine and Dead of Winter. I'm not much of a solo player but do they scratch a similar enough itch to compete for attention or are they different enough to warrant owning both in your opinion? Thank you for the amazing channel. I enjoy all the content you make and your personal stories you mix in with your videos and reviews.

Some similarities, but a very different dynamic. TWOM very much focuses on the group as a group, not as individual characters. Its far more collective and collaborative than Dead of Winter which is all about "me first" survival. DoW also has a stunt dog that can vote and use guns and a mall santa. TWOM never gets that silly

Yes. But i got the kickstarter backer version of the expansion, so im not 100% sure whats in the expansion itself vs the core. I'd say its worth getting only if you have played the original a lot. As there are a bunch of modules i only occasionally play with in TWOM

This was one of the very first games i reviewed and i didnt do the Gold Medals for the first 2 years. I did a video where i announced the gold medals and retrospectively gave it out to a bunch of early reviewed games, including Terraforming Mars, This War of Mine and Anachrony.
