Just hang a yellow tag on anything that's awaiting parts, then at the very least ALL in machine shop knows that something is missing! Yellow tag for parts, Red tag for work to be done and Green tag for job complete awaiting delivery or pick up.

We have little alligator clips with red streamers on them. The streamers have the initials of the engineer on them so if it isn't obvious why the tag is on it, you know who to ask. Being aviation though, if it is an item that could cause a serious issue if missed, a work card will be raised in the paperwork or an entry in the maintenance release.

Moral of the story, and I do this too. If something is temporarily put together incomplete for some reason or something not fully buttoned up and torqued, I wire a tag on near the spot with a note on the tag. I've made these kinds of mistakes as well. Never ever rely on memory, or good communication. One can buy packets of tags that you can write on and that have a thin wire and are easy to put on and they don't fall off easy. Just a suggestion.

@serialcoins

It's one of those things, that if someone told you, you'd left the seal out, you would say it was impossible. But the customer has a duty to take precautions to ensure the engine is all bedded in and checked and tested. And in the end the problem was diagnosed and fixed. Sometimes customers make a big deal out of it, other times they are more interested to diagnose and rectify the problem, than make waves.

When I was doing my apprenticeship back in 1963, the company I worked for had a fleet of motorcycles as well as commercial vehicles. After I had a day off, I came in to find a bike on the bench with a note on my toolbox saying "new crankshaft required" . I felt very proud of myself getting the job done in one day with no help. On coming in the next day I found that the mechanic had fitted a new crankshaft in the bike on my day off, red faces all round, but it was covered up. Better communications were the lesson learned.

Gotta be willing to own them mistakes if you wanna learn from them. We've all made them, I once left a socket in a cam cradle, truck made it to Texas before that socket caught up in a camshaft and ruined $1600 worth of parts, another time I didn't check behind an apprentice who overlapped a oil ring and wiped out a short block. We tend to measure our experience with success, but I think more is learned from our past failures.

You need to have a card sheet with each engine with the work carried out and dated and signed by the person carrying out the operations. With having a long time between engine work things can be forgotten and overlooked. The plus side to all this is that information on the card can be checked off and inspected by you before shipment.

Nice one Lee keep up your honesty. As others have said it pays in the end. I think you have also answered my question regarding the importance of piston balancing. I had renewed a head gasket on my 2008 ford transit connect after a snapped cam belt .Number 1 piston swirl pot got damaged with the valve. I ignored it thinking it wouldn't make a drifferance and now after seeing your work in balancing pistions on your lathe,i think made a mistake in not changing that piston crown as the engine now runs with a slight vibration which i think is because the diesel doesn't combust smoothly with the swirl pot damaged.But keep up the great work and a great person too.A shout to your hard working team
