We are almost out. There maybe only 100 of us left. A few of us don't even remember how we got here. We still have the ringing in our ears and my buddies Ivan B. and Ivan T. their bruises are finally healed from the clubbing our heads were dealt by the USSR's military. Oh wait the USSR no longer exist??? Damn! How long have we been in this exit line? These smart phone devices were dropped from a chopper in the sky. We are just now discovering BlackBerry phones.

Makes me tear up every time. This was just months before the fall of the Soviet Union. So often history is marked by wars, disasters, famines. We need more history marked by massive rock concerts with 1.6M crowds - the population of Moscow in 1991 was about 9M, so about 1/6 of the city was there. Cheers!

Regular concert-goers judge that the best sound balance is usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles from the stage, whilst the musicians themselves play their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stays in orbit around the planet - or more frequently around a completely different planet. Their songs are on the whole very simple and mostly follow the familiar theme of boy-being meets girl-being beneath a silvery moon, which then explodes for no adequately explored reason. Many worlds have now banned their act altogether, sometimes for artistic reasons, but most commonly because the band’s public address system contravenes local strategic arms limitation treaties."

Ecstasy of Gold has been used as a show intro by Metallica since 1983. Out of the 14 Metallica shows I've personally been to starting February 10th 1989 and the latest being July 9th 2017 there is only one I can think of that they did not use it. That was summer 1994 Florida State Fairgrounds when came out to Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town. Metallica has also recorded their own version of Ecstasy of Gold. Pretty cool. This was Sept 28 1991 It was the "Monsters of Rock Tour" and it featured many bands (including metallica) there were 1.6 million (estimated) people at the concert grounds. To give historical context, first, I was 21 at the time I remember the historical situation well. There was, for all intent and purposes a collapse/coup in russia which essentially saw the old "soviet union" collapse and reform into what is now the Russian Federation. This is around the same time as the berlin wall coming down, many eastern bloc countries regaining independence. The new Russian government wanted to try and emerge as a more open society, and by comparison they achieved that (Russia before this was the Iron curtain). One of the ways they did that was invite western artists to perform. No one knew how badly the russian people wanted to rock, it was amazing at the time just as amazing as it is for you now to see it 30 years later.

It is in the historical context that one must see the concert; and why the audience was so wild. 2-3 years before the concert it was fatamogana and believe that western rock bands would come to Russia.

Awesome reaction, instant sub! How they got that many people there is that it was held at Tushino Airfield (at that time, now a stadium has been built there) in Moscow and it was a free show for them, set up in part by Soviet Premier Gorbachev to try to ease tensions (Soviet Union fell just 3-4 months later). This was part of the Monsters of Rock festival/concert tour that was also headlined by AC/DC and Pantera.

@@MorenikejiTaiwo In 1991, American heavy metal band Metallica made history by becoming the first Western rock group to perform in Moscow. The concert was a momentous event, not only for the band, but also for the city of Moscow and for the country of Russia as a whole. The concert was a symbol of the changing times, as the Soviet Union was beginning to crumble and the country was opening up to the outside world. For Metallica, the concert was a chance to show their fans in Russia that they were a force to be reckoned with. The band played to a sold-out crowd of over 60,000 people, and the performance was hailed as a success. The Soviet Union fell in 1991, and Metallica played a massive concert there a few months later. During the event, a group of Red Army soldiers were called in to help manage the crowd. The 1990s were marked by an influx of cultural exports from the United States, most notably Metallica’s Enter Sandman. It is impossible to overestimate the impact of the band’s distinctive style on students in high schools and colleges in Eastern Europe and around the world. ( the lead into music is from the film, THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY < > Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly )

That live concert still holds the Guiness Book World's Record for the largest attendance as of the 2023 edition. And back in 1991, we FELT THE VIBRATIONS in the ground here in BELGIUM, about 9000 kilometers away.

There was another band that played that day, in front of 1.6 million Russians, and that bands name is PANTERA....it's heavier than 1991 Metallica stuff, but you might wanna check them out as well....the entire Pantera album from 1992 called "A Vulgar Display of Power" is incredible...🙂✌🏻🇺🇸
