I played this song at my 1st husband's funeral years ago, and everyone wanted to know the artist. The look on the face when the preacher had to say Metallica was priceless! Especially after he initially refused to play it based on stereotyping the band. I stood my ground knowing he hadn't taken the time to hear it for himself. Threatened to have his service at another church. I know he smiled down knowing Hundreds of people where listening to Metallica in a church❤🤟

Let me TELL y’all lol, when this song & album “Load” came out the majority of the Metallica fans from the 80’s HATED IT because they wanted to experiment musically & do something more than JUST thrash metal. They got SO MUCH HATE!!!! I think people today can NOW appreciate what they were doing bcuz people are more musically open minded. I LOVED this song right from the GET GO!!!! So beautiful & while I’m not a country music fan I loved what James did with this song!!! This gave me a few chills again just now!!!

This was the transition album. They took a long break after the black album, cut their hair, got married, had kids. Fans were livid at that time. I remember, the hate they got was real. They got “soft”. I say they morphed and adapted. This was 1994-1995

according to Hetfield himshelf this is what had say about meaning of this song In an interview with Mojo magazine December 2008, Hetfield referred to this song about his mother as, "like a prodigal son song: leaving and then coming back and it's too late, you can't talk to her now." He added: "It was a realization that lots of questions went unanswered. 'I want to say this. I want to ask you this.' And you're unable to. But through therapy I was able to do a lot of grief work, about both parents."

The people who complain about this era of Metallica just didn't grow up. There is a saying that you can outgrow your favorite band, or your favorite band can outgrow you. I have been on the Metallica journey for all 40 years and I get the evolution. As James Hetfield said, "You can't stay young and angry forever." I love their entire body of work. Honestly how boring would it be to just do the same thing over and over?? Would a painter do the same portrait 500 times? Art is evolution and it should be appreciated - Metallica is WAY more than a thrash metal band.

I'll share with you why this period of Metallica bothered me. I wasn't pissed, because by then I was into sepultura, fear factory, Pantera etc. But the thing with Metallica wasnt the music change as much as their image, particularly their fashion. It seemed contrived for shock value. Sparkly suits, fedoras, mascara...and in a way, it was contrived because they don't dress that way now, and they didn't previous to that, so it was a "hey, look at me too hip to care" when in reality, they cared too much. The combination of that, plus the new musical direction with zero sign of their roots, not even a little, is what soured fans. And you hear them now, they went back to their roots, some experimenting but still holding onto what brought them to the dance. If a guy likes thrash, you can't blame him for being mad at the absence of it. Ppl didn't buy their albums for country and blues. So I think a backlash was expected, and somewhat deserved. Still, I feel the majority of ppl love the load album, even if it took a few years to come around, it's appreciated. Better late than never. St. Anger is another issue 😛
@pastorofmuppets133 жыл бұрын
@@duaneshank6788 I get what you are saying. I guess when you get to a certain point, you can try something completely different - I would think you would need to just because creativity/inspiration comes from different places as you age. I came around to St. Anger after hearing the songs live so I'm not mad at it. I guess what bothers me is that a band like Led Zep for instance can do an acoustic ballad, a reggae song, a blues song, a hard rock song, cut their hair, wear what they want and it is fine - but when Metallica does it, it isn't. It just seems crazy for people to expect a band to be born, live and die on the same note. Not everyone is AC/DC lol.

Most people don't understand how deep and personal this song is for James.
@tallycahamuhlhetru263 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, James was a mama's boy at one time. He was raised by a strict Christian Scientists upbringing. They're the religious sect that doesn't believe in medical intervention of any kind. No meds, no doctors, no hospitals. At 16-years-old he was an on-looker to his mother's death at home from cancer. He tried to beg his mom to get help, but... ☹ Three years earlier at 13, his father bailed on the family. Left and didn't return to James & his younger sister's life until they were in their late 20's. What remained was a devastated & a very angry young man. Music was his saving Grace.

This is during their more experimental Blues/Country era, Load and ReLoad, which get a lot of hate. I personally love Load, and think ReLoad is ok. I certainly don’t think that era deserves all the hate it gets. With this song, the line that gets me is “I need your arms to welcome me, but cold stone’s all I see” meaning she’s passed, he’s looking at her headstone. I lost my mom suddenly in 2014 without warning. I never got to say goodbye, never got to tell her a lot of things I wanted to. I was a mommas boy, as I think most guys with decent mothers tend to be. I miss her, and that line gets to me the most. The entire song is emotional to begin with, but that hits the hardest for me.

The downside is everyone comparing it to the earlier albums and the massive tempo and chord changes which everyone has to admit to the genius that was Cliff Burton. Those albums (Load and Reload) were a reflection of the band it this stage of their life at that time. Basically as a extremely long time Metallica fan can put it.

Very underrated song. The lyrics is what makes this song honestly. Granted the entire Load album was a departure from the normal of Metallica, but a lot of emotion I feel was put into the songs on that album of James growing up. There was songs pre Load that touch on it but this album fully exposed his feelings of his parents in my opinion. By the way since y’all are Shawn and Mel and you refer to us as the S&M squad you should react to Metallica’s S&M album. No Leaf Clover would be a good song to react too. Or even S&M2 album. Think you might get that tear Shawn.

Metallica really can’t make a bad song. Some are, of course, way better than others, but never really a bad song. James’s mom died when he was a young man (still just some guy in a band). I don’t think he’s ever gotten over it. His dad left them when he was about 11. So he had a hard life in his early years and it’s definitely negatively affected him as an adult.

The singers mother died when he was a teen, this song is about his regret of drifting away from his mother due to the religion he was raised in, his regret of not giving love back to his mother as he now feels he should have. He wants so badly for the pain of his mother’s absence in her death to numb or cease but he realizes it will be with him forever, and so in the end he wishes for his life to stop.
