My last video in Dublin and I'm at the famous Darkey Kelly's which is known as one of the best pubs in the entire city. I'm also here for one special reason, when in Ireland, you have to have a lot of Guinness and a hearty Irish stew! This was a bit of an emotional one for me today.

I was born in the Rotunda hospital in Dublin 1955. Back then, Guinness donated a bottle of stout to every woman in the maternity ward. Their kind gesture was to keep the women's iron level up.

That stopped when they started putting all the chemicals in it. Years ago, they used state Guinness was good for you. They used also say - an apple a day keeps the Doctor away

@@Madigan2Doubt it. What chemicals are these then please back up your claim. They probably stopped because it's actually a myth that Guinness contains iron. It doesn't. Well perhaps a negligible amount. They also probably stopped because of the concept of giving out alcohol.

My nana who I left school to look after for 6 years with dementia used make a stew four days in advance of eating with loads bones in for the marrow and then removed when eaten,never hand anything like ever,was almost sweet,the meat melted in the mouth,everything felt better after that stew..I know your going through something similar with your mum..my nana didn’t know what day it was or that her husband had died,but remembered everything shoe size and price she sold as 17 year old girl…just focus on the things they remember not what they don’t remember Gary,it brings them joy and while it’s Groundhog Day for the people doing the caring talking about the same stuff but its joy and pleasure for them..I admire you giving back the love that your mum gave you,just like my nana did with me

Visited Dublin 20 years ago. Found a recommended food pub. I forget the name. Arrived about 7.30pm. Place was packed. No tables available. Ordered a drink and asked about ordering food. No problem, said the barman, if you don't mind sitting at the bar. I didn't, so I did. Had a fabulous Irish Stew while chatting with the incredibly friendly bar staff. Great memories. We don't want you to go! I used to be a tour guide in Dublin and one thing that a lot of people don't know about Guinness is they had the harp before Ireland became a republic and in 1879 trademarked the harp. When Ireland became a republic, they wanted the harp for the national emblem. They made a deal with Guinness, Guinness said the harp could be used as long as it was turned the other way around. So if you look at the harp as national emblem on govt buildings etc, the harp faces opposite the Guinness harp. I could tell you a lot about Darkey Kelly as well, very dark history! Next time you are here Gary, go to Johnny Foxes and the Blue light in the Dublin mountains, fab places.

Actually, there was a harp in the Irish flag between 1801 and 1922, but I accept that it was a different design. I believe the harp had the head of a woman.

@mamasinger49 7 ай бұрын
@@AdrianLee-ho1ds Been used for so many centuries, as far back as 8th century, sure even Henry VIII took it upon himself to make himself King of Ireland in 1541 and used the harp on new coins he had made with a harp with a crown on top. Many different uses and variations throughout the centuries, just was pointing out the agreement between Guinness and the new republic at the time. So much history in Ireland and the harp alone has so much, always very interesting.

My favourite food is a hearty stew mash and bread soda or otherwise. That stew looked delicious and a very good portion. The pudding was novel in the Guinness glass for presentation. Top marks there 10. I bet you are sad to leave Dublin but it has showcased the food on offer there very well. The prices for Dublin have been very reasonable too. All in All a very successful enjoyable visit.

Hi Gary Very good finish to your visit to the lovely city of Dublin. I think 8/10 for that one. The Irish stew looked warm and comforting washed down with a lovely pint of Guinness. I also really liked the presentation of the pudding which was very unusual. It also looked scrummy. I would have liked to see a biscuit with it as I always think mouse needs a little bit of context with it. Good looking pub too. As usual an excellent video mate

Looked like a lovely place Gary. Fantastic n delicious looking food. I'm a bit like you, looking back to when my folks owned a pub. A lot of work helping out just to earn a few pound if you were lucky, but great memories. The chocolate mousse brought me back to my school days when you could buy it in a polystyrene cup for 10p 😆. If you were lucky enough, you would have enough money left over to buy a packet of 5/10p crisp. Ah they were the days. 😄 Lovely place, such great value for food, especially with a pint. Agree with the 8.5/9, worth a visit for sure. Safe journey ahead. Looking forward to it. 👏👍

Never, in the field of human food tasting channels, have I ever salivated more than on Gary’s. I’ve unsubscribed from most of the other channels. I’m reminded of the closing scene in the 70’s TV show “The Galloping Gourmet” when our host and chef Graham Kerr pulled the most ecstatic facial expressions while tasting the new dish, making me desperate to be the lucky audience member who shared the dish (and wine of course). Sensational review again Gary. Always unpretentious, warm and on point. Yet another way-point for the sat nav!

Do you know what Gary?...you are so right when you said the stew brought back memories of your mum. Same here. Days cooking, filling the house with delicious aromas & then when you ate it you wouldn't want it to end it was so yummy. Both my mum & my nan were such good cooks. I haven't inherited their skills!! Lost my mum when I was only 31 but the memories of her cooking stay with me every time I smell a stew cooking. Wish I could turn back that clock. The Irish are so welcoming.
