"Pink Floyd is different." Truer words were never spoken. David Gilmour is the guitarist, Roger Waters is the vocalist, Nick Mason is the drummer, and Richard Wright is the keyboardist. No other musical entity comes close to their epic, extraordinary, unique sound. Thank you for your reaction and wise words to describe them and this song. Epic masterpiece!

Usually Dave Gilmour did lead vocals or harmony lead vocals with Rick Wright. That's Dave on the first half lead of Dogs, Roger Waters on the second half lead vocals starting with" gotta admit I'm a little bit confused. Roger wrote most of their great stuff.

Roger Waters wanting more lead vocal parts is a lot of what broke the band up. It started with this album, but on the Wall he was so demanding that the other guys didn't even want to be there in the studio, and there are whole chunks of the album that Gilmour and Wright aren't even on.

You are right! We WERE spoiled growing up in the era of Pink Floyd…rock and roll was SO GOOD in the 60’s and 70’s! Pink Floyd is the best of the Progressive Rock era. You cannot dance to this kind of music. But it takes you somewhere. We used to come home from school or work and put on headphones, turn on all this great music, turn up the volume and get lost in the journey. It was a form of meditation. It opened our minds. Where did these talents come from? Heaven, I think. That’s how it felt. If you like this music….there is more of this genre to love! Not just Pink Floyd, either. Moody Blues, Genesis, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and YES, just to name a few! When I was in High School, one of my neighbors from my class got a Pink Floyd album in the mail when he joined a Columbia Record club. We had never heard of them before. He called me over to his house and he said, “you have to listen to this album!” We probably played that album over and over for a few hours. He had four speakers, one in each corner of the room, and he turned up the volume. We were mesmerized! He rolled a joint and we were gone. We hung out a lot in the early 70’s, just listening to the albums coming in the mail. Record stores were making a fortune back then! Everybody was introducing albums they had heard with everyone else, sharing what they had been hearing. We drove around in cars with friends just listening to the radio and tapes. We went to see every band who came in concert. Some of those bands would play for 4 hours or more in concert! And they sounded just like the albums…such talent! By the way, my neighbor friend became Valedictorian of my graduating class. That music expanded our minds!

Pink Floyd live is/was amazing. I first saw Floyd in April 1975 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, NY. They opened with "One of These Days" from the Meddle album. They then asked the crowd if we minded if they tried out their yet to be released next album, "Wish You Were Here". We got to hear the entire album, in order a couple months before they released it to the public. They took a 10 minute intermission and came back and played the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album, in order. They left as the crowd was shaking the place for an encore. They came back out and performed a 40 minute version of "Echoes" from the Meddle album as the encore. I have seen hundreds of concerts in the years since but the introduction to Pink Floyd live still remains the most memorable concert that I have attended. It was a sight and sound extravaganza. I had eighth row floor seats and it only cost me $7.50 face price. By far, the BEST Concert value, EVER

Roger Waters (wrote all the lyrics) had some serious shit to say. I guess when you grow up in England in the ashes of WW2 authoritarians are frightening, and life is cheap and precious.

Waters' name is credited on all the songs which means he didn't JUST write the lyrics... He's the genius behind Floyd and their sound. Listen to how their sound changed after he left the band.
@lionelmax29534 жыл бұрын
Mrk66One just the lyrics, musically didnt change much. Of course the later albums weren’t as good as the previous ones but it wasnt as bad as people say it. Remember, musically, Gilmour, Nick and rick were the geniuses. But its just my opinion.

Picture in your minds eye a young kid listening on an am radio for the first time, and going to buy the album. Preston, I've been watching your "experiences" listening to music I grew up with and have enjoyed deeply re-experiencing the music almost as though for the first time simply by following your authentic, honest enthusiasm. It's a joy to see. As a few people have commented, they're jealous for what you have ahead of you: so much music from that era that was crafted for art purposes, not simply as a product, which is where the music industry largely is today for a variety of reasons. Album sales revenues back then, when Animals was made, were substantial, and that $ meant the record labels allowed artists to take months/years/$ to create works such as Pink Floyd's Animals, because the sales would support that investment. We're in a different time today, as we know. But...at the pace you're going, you literally have a decade or two ahead of simply taking in the massive amount of quality guitar-oriented rock music created in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s....etc. You have a wonderful, joyous journey ahead of you. Keep listening and we'll keep tuning in.
@timchristionmyers78955 жыл бұрын
Ditto. Watching his reactions make me his age again (or younger) when the world of music was fresh and ready to be discovered.
@MagnoliaED5 жыл бұрын
Yes...I greatly enjoy the purity and sincerity of Preston's reactions. One thing that's different when comparing his age to mine when I first heard this music is he's older, and his music-listening experience is broader than mine. I see that as an advantage that provides additional perspective compared to me when I was, say, 15. I had little perspective, so while the music was captivating, I couldn't see it (yet) as a part of a larger tapestry. The fact that he has more experience and then still finds the essential magic in older music is all the more impressive.

It makes my heart so happy! ❤❤ PS - I went on a researching spree over Pink Floyd too - I learned as much as I could about the band, the albums, the split, & the individual members. It's so much fun living vicariously through your first listens to Pink Floyd. Yes, I'm a lucky one who was 17 when this came out. I used to go with my buddies and drive off the road to park in some farm field watching thunderstorms approach and get very high on some weed listening to this album, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of the Moon. Yes, it's trippy enough without the weed, but I will always remember just how deeply profound those experiences felt at the time, and in fact, I can still get those feelings over a half century later. Enjoy your Pink Floyd journey, and so happy young people are keeping this amazing era of music alive.

I had the chance to see Pink Floyd live once, when I lived in Washington DC. I never before or after I have seen a performance like it or listened a crystal clear and powerful sound. That was in the summer of 1995. I recomend that concert for you to see. They played The Dark Side of The Moon complete after a short break. The name of the concert was "Pulse".👽👍
