Jeff, I thought alot about why do I need to see a reactor reacting to a song that I already like? I think it fullfills a need of turning them on to something! Its like sharing something with someone, it may give us joy! I dumped a reactor recently because he slammed Floyd and it made me really mad because he was disrespectful, calling Floyd fans “A Cult”. Syd Barrett (founder; guitar) was the originator and the quirky eccentric; inevitably the consequential muse - was forced out in 1968 (drug/mental health issues) Roger Water (bass) was the cultivator (seed sower), the lyrically conceptual prodigy and co-maestro of songwriting; he left PF in 1985. David Gilmour (guitar) was the placidity, guitar virtuoso, the voice and co-maestro; the equilibrium Richard Wright (keyboards) was the essential underlying symmetry; musical nurturer Nick Mason (drums) was the heartbeat, structure and foundation; the sole member involved from the emergence of PF to the last recording. These guys alone are musical mortals... but collectively they were and are immortal!!! Who cares who was best and or the basis for the conceptual artistry, genius and brilliance of Pink Floyd? They have left us the embodiment of their musical journey to share, enjoy and reflect upon. ~ enough said!! \m/

@@bellmeisterful Waters was already out of the band by the time this particular album came out. But during the 70's (when Pink Floyd's most highly regarded albums were released) he was the principal lyricists, and took more and more control of them as the decade went on. This was in fact one of the biggest rifts that lead to him leaving. Roger felt no one else was contributing, while the other members (especially Gilmour) felt he was focusing too much on lyrics at the expense of the music. The interesting thing about their rift is that Gilmour and Waters have always been pretty upfront about giving the other credit for their contributions. Gilmour often references arguments they had where it turned out Waters was "right" (Gilmour's words) about the best way to play a song, while I've never once heard Waters downplay Gilmour's legendary guitar or songwriting contributions. These guys couldn't stand to be around each other or work with each other, but these days they tend to give the other full credit for what they brought to the band while they were all in it.

Wow what an explanation. Absolutely love it.
@MrIdenas Жыл бұрын
I remember listening to this when I was 15, back in 2006. I have realized then what Gilmour wanted to give to us with this song. He allowed me to feel, how he feels at that stage in his life, about his youth about the past time that he had, and as you say the nostalgia and yearning to be young again, to get back to those times... It made me appreciate my youth much more, because I knew that one day I will feel like that as well when thinking about my past and I should make the best of it with the time that I had... Sadly, now that I look back, I still think I have wasted too much time... But I suppose this nostalgic state of self reminiscence about the past is inevitable, regardless of how one's spent his time.

It’s funny how you noticed that piano transition and did not mention the amazing Spanish guitar solo preceding it that perfectly illustrated that “steps forwards and sleepwalking back again” line. Hey Preston, I really enjoy your reactions, you have a soul that understands music on a deep level! Much respect to you for that! I know you really enjoyed the Nightwish masterpieces you have reacted to so far and so I should mention that they have a cover of High Hopes sung by Marco, the bass player that is Nightwish style Epic! I would love to see your reaction to it! You will be blown away I'm certain!

Not many covers are better than the original, but Nightwish nailed song. Awesome

I cry tears every time I listen to this. Not just because of its implicit meaning, but because of the meaning for PF. This was their last song on their final studio album. This was a goodbye.

I have been watching your reactions to Pink Floyd. They have so much material and it's hard to put it into words. They are just so extremely talented. I was in High School in the seventies in Houston. There are none like them. There music is timeless! I can't pick my favorite because so many are just that good. I have noticed through my 50 years of music, The people that do not like them. It's too deep and they just don' get it. When you do your in Love forever. We were lucky back in the day when so much talent was around. I still listen to it to this day!!! Love Love It!!!

Give a shot to Riverside, Lunatic Soul, Anathema, Katatonia, The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, and Steven Wilson if you want bands that follow a similar path but are unique in their own ways. Trust me, there are many modern bands that make great music. My recommendation would be Weather Systems and Time Traveller.

Please do "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" - Pink Floyd It has the distinction of being one of the few Pink Floyd songs with all five members; those being David Gilmour, Rodger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Syd Barrett. This was due to Syd's partial mental collapse as a result of intense uses of LSD in 1968 from which point on it became just four members. Such a sad person. R.I.P. Syd
