The high-pitched voice is imitating Frank Valli of Frank Valli and the Four Seasons, who did the song "Stay" in 1963, that is why it gets such applause. That line "Oh won't you stay, just a little bit longer", is from that song.

Actually the original version of Stay was by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs released in 1960 and was written by Williams.The falsetto part was in the original 1960 recording. The Four Seasons version is a cover.

This whole album is unique in that it was a live album but instead of it being like a greatest hits type live album it was an album of all new material recorded live while on tour. Most songs were recorded in front of a live audience but 1 was recorded on their tour bus and I believe it was 2 tracks were recorded in a hotel room. But it was all new songs. Nobody has ever recorded a live album of all new songs before.

The falsetto Singer is multi-instrumentalist David Lindley, who had a minor hit with his remake of Mercury Blues with his Band El Rayo-X, worthy of a listen in and of itself. David just passed away and was from the Inland Empire region of Southern California. He could play almost any instrument you handed him.

Me too, I was a lighting guy. In fact, in 1977, one of my first gigs for this one company was a little setup to light a drum kit and a backdrop. It turned out to be the cover for this album.

This is a tribute to the "Roadies." The guys and gals that move and set up the sound equipment, guitars and drums, pianos etc. They travel in semi-trucks from city to city, ahead of the Band-artist and get everything ready for the concert, then they have to tear it all down and load it into the trucks again. What a thankless job...until he wrote this song.

I recall an interview with Glenn Frey, co-founder of the Eagles. He and Don Henley were still backing Linda Ronstadt so it was pre-Eagles in California. JB was renting a basement room beneath their apartment and Glenn could listen to JB working on a new song. Time after time, hour after hour, he’d work a line, change keys, inflections, etc. Then the second line same thing. Chorus. Work back and make some changes to match them up better. Do it over and over again until it was all planted in his memory. Glenn said that’s when he learned what it took to be a great songwriter, and all due to JB. His career body of work is the evidence.

Actually, 4 songs on Running On Empty were recorded live on stage, 3 of the songs on the album were recorded in various motel rooms while they were on the road, one song was recorded backstage before a concert, and one song was recorded on a Continental Silver Eagle bus as they were driving down the road. Running On Empty is one of my all time favorite albums.

Jackson Browne's music was a big part of my formative years. I finally got to see him in the early 90's when I was living in Santa Cruz, CA. There were only two songs in his whole set that didn't have some strong emotional connection or memory for me, and I got teary several times. One of the deepest memories for me was from my high school years in the 70's. I went to Immaculate Heart High in L.A., and during my junior year, one of the students died in a car crash. Her name was Kiki, and she was a stone Jackson Browne fan. The school scheduled a memorial service for her in the school auditorium, and her closest friends went to Jackson's house in Laurel Canyon, and papered his gate with notes begging him to come to the memorial. AND HE DID. He walked in with his guitar, and I still remember her best friend breaking down sobbing, crying "He came! He came!" He played and sang for us and for Kiki, and we were all falling apart listening to him. He didn't have to do that; this was _decades_ before the age of social media, so if he hadn't shown up, no one would have known about it. But he did, and proved himself a straight-up, generous guy.

That is such a bittersweet story, the loss of a classmate and the generosity of a famous musician. I am not shocked at JB coming to play. He strikes me as that kind of human. He was my very favorite singer/songwriter from that time. A friend and I awaited every new album coming out and couldn't wait for our ear's to feast. I saw him in an intimate theater in Boston. He was touring with Linda Ronstadt (I think it was '72, maybe even later). They were taking turns opening for one another. The night I went Linda started and Jackson finished up. It was the best concert I have ever attended.

The story goes that, for a while, the female backup singers did the falsetto bit, although it was done by a male in the original recordings. The band started rehearsing it that way when Jackson wasn't around. One night they sprang it on him live during a show. His first reaction was, "What the Hell is going on?" Then he listened and loved it. They did it that way from then on. They used it as a closer and encore for several years.

I believe that is Russ Kunkel on drums. At least, he is credited as being the drummer on this album. He is also credited with being the drummer on this tour in documentaries, and in interviews with the other members.

The term "slide guitar" usually refers to a regular guitar played with a slide. The instrument played here is called a "lap steel" due to how it is played across the lap. It too is played with a slide though so the confusion is understandable. Lap steel guitars are usually tuned to open chords and the slide changes which chord (G, C, A, etc.) is played. There is also a "pedal steel" which is on a stand and has knee and foot levers to change the type of chord (major, minor, 7th, etc.) and also played with a slide.

As a former touring guitarist I can appreciated the work the road crew does. It take all the pressure off the musician so all they have to concentrate on putting on a great show. Knowing when you walk on stage and pick up your guitar its in tune and your amp is set up the way you need it to be is such a blessing and testiment to how important your support staff is to the show.

Interestingly enough, Browne started writing songs as a teenager, and started his musical career as a member of the "Nitty Gritty Dirt Band". He spent a brief time in NYC before returning to his native California, where he was a part of that west-coast vibe that included Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, Gregg Allman, and others. He actually co-wrote "Take It Easy" with Glenn Frey, and he introduced Frey and Don Henley to Ronstadt, and they ended up joining her band initially, before branching off to start the Eagles. He never wanted to record his own music, thinking that his voice wasn't good enough, but was finally convinced to write and record his own music, and the rest is history. He's widely-known as being an amazing songwriter, and he was also known jokingly throughout his career as the "6th Eagle". In fact, he performed with the Eagles at the Grammy's in their tribute to Glenn Frey after his passing, singing the lead on "Take It Easy".

According to an article in Rolling Stone magazine, the band had never played The Load Out all the way through before playing it as part of an extended encore at the Merriweather Post Pavilion.
