Captain, been watching since year one, my first post. I'm a Professional Engineer, EE, saw the Bus Bar job. Since the bottom is a solid trough, my concern is moisture build up. The copper is going to be cold most of the time and cause condensation in the mornings, and the water can't escape. You've made a perfect electrolysis cell, the tin will migrate to one bar. It may grow tin or carbon tracking across the 8mm center insulation, leading to a fire. We see it all the time on fiberglass PCBs used outdoor. I suggest you put a hole in the top piece of fiberglass at the center of the bus, and connect high pressure blower. Have a check valves at the ends to let air escape. Run it on sunny days when you have extra power to dry the moisture. Once a week should. Before you connect anything to the bars, run a hi-pot test. It will spark at the weak point. Make sure you can get over 1000v before it sparks. Also measure the leakage at a fixed voltage, like 500v, to establish a base line when its clean and dry. Later you can retake the measurement, maybe once a year, to see how much conductive contamination you have. Smooth sailing you awesome dude.

It’d be nice if you added a 5 minute segment to each of your episodes dedicated to Sierra. It would have been cool to see her bike riding at the park. Love your videos. Looking forward to next weeks episode!

Hello DELOS I love your project. I am an aluminum man myself. I built a Van de Stadt Madeiera in 2006. The drinking water tanks in it are 650 L and are treated exactly like the tanks in Delos 2.0 with epoxy Jotun tank gard. Even after 15 years of use, the paint system is top notch. After the first tank filling, the water will taste plastic. We removed it with apple cider vinegar sold in health food stores. 1 L per 650 l of water and after a flush 1 to 2 days later, the water tastes as it should. Feel free to repeat after a year or 2 Regards Andrè

Hi Delos! Don’t forget to cut extra seals as spares for future use. Eventualy they will be needed and one of the downsides of a custom project like this is that there will be lots of custom fabricated parts that you just can not walk to a store and buy. As I am sure you kown all to well, they might be needed when you are in some remote place and can not order the materials or have no access to proper tools… Cheers!!

probably a good idea to store them in airtight vacuum bags to slow down deterioration
@Rlbullard494442 күн бұрын
Spare gaskets will not hold up in storage. The will most likely shrink and distort and be useless. Better to make a drawing of the gaskets and find a way to store bulk nitrile sheets in a climate controlled environment.

They got 2 Hulls with (if i am not mistaken) each got 2 separate Tanks. If ever needet work or replacements they can just work on one side/tank let the others untouched and got time to source material and reach a port. I also think the tank lids will need a rework/upgrade and at least the gaskets changing in not so far future. They need to stiffen the perimeter on the tank openings and the lid edges to not deform while bolting down (and leak) but even more to not creep over time under the pressure. Low fasstening tourge schould help but is in fight with the gasket who needs compression. A thicker material even with same hardenes usualy mean you can compress it way better and with less force. Same with a softer gasket materia. Luckely the fuel and water tanks are not under pressure while in use and might have venting holes/pipes or at leas pressure releif valves in the system, Or some rubbery lines attchet to it who will take up some pressure from temp changes. More a problem maybee in the future will be the liid perimeter/edges are not reinforced against creep and warp. The tightening force and the movement in the hulls while under way will probably creep the edges and new leaks will appear. I would not be happy with a lid/seal solution i need to pressurize to test and even than barely get to seal with soap, time and a close eye on it. But Time will tell. I dont know how mutch space is above to the flooring. But i would put 90° L angle profile strips on the bolts. One leg upright the other drilled. it would work as down pressure stiffener and a larger pressure mitigation layer as only the washers. Also source thicker/softener gasket material. Both can be done without welding or repainting. The L Shape stripes (with as thick material as you can get or like) are even without new gaskets quick to make and to put in. Its only few hours work. Sure maybee you want a new pressure test. But this is also a good exersise and dryrun for when this is ever needet under way.. can you get the lids sealed again without braking bolts.. do you find a tourge spec with this you could use in the future?

Not for nothing but, I have always enjoyed watching you guys interact with one another . so chill even when everything is chaotic. The time crunch , the heat, the back breaking work, the uncertainty of all of it . I know maybe 2 couples other than my wife and I who could do this project without ending up either Divorced or before the boat is done deciding to just end the project due to stress, anxiety, being exhausted daily Etc. Team work is essential and having the mind set that it is US vs the world and nothing can break us attitude is so important when having to do these massive projects alone together. there is an end game and it is important to keep reminding yourselves that THIS whole thing is for YOU !!! investing time, energy, patience , for YOUR SELVES is the whole reason for taking this whole thing on in the first place. if you want it , but were not born in to money you have to sacrifice time and energy to make your dreams come true . It's refreshing to see this dream coming to fruition with patience and understanding and respect and love for one another . Put stainless water tanks in our cat and while costly we never regretted it. There was a minor issue when of the owner group’s toddler spent 15 minutes dropping wood shavings through the fill hole but once resolved no issues, easy to clean and rarely needed it. The problem with paint is that it is almost guaranteed to fail at some point. TBH I would have had ss tanks fabbed for both fuel and water. If you can’t clean through an access port just cold cut a hole then weld it back. Cleaning your tanks will be fun with all those ribs.

Hole-ee gaskets Batman! Only one little leak! It must feel awesome to get that behind you! Keep up the great work, she is looking amazing
@MikeBanks20032 күн бұрын
Cheap seal for stainless bolts is provided by countersinking the surfaces to be bolted together and putting an O-ring in the interface so formed by countersinking both sides. So we have from top down, bolt, washer, plate material such as a deck stanchion base or water tank top, O-Ring on bolt shaft to snug into the countersink space next to the permanent material such as an epoxy cured deck or fibreglass or aluminium flange on tank. Then we have the final washer and finally a self-locking stainless nut. I do this trick even when I am using a separate gasket, because bolt shafts are the main source of water ingress through decks or water egress from tankage.

I've never built a boat but made a bunch of stuff. If I may make a suggestion, take a small package of aluminum nuts and bolts and wrap them up tight then tape right near the tanks in each hull. Hopefully you will never need spare bolts but so nice to know you have extras right where they might be needed. Why not put them in a spares bin with all the others? No hunting them down and less likely to get lost or damaged. Maybe put any extra gasket material in a roll in the same place. Just an idea. Wish you the best of luck.
@Total_EgalКүн бұрын
Even better would be making spare holes where you can in that area but with nothing to hold. Or just weld a litte bracket there in with holes. Put the spare bolt there where you need it. All platsic bags and Tape or Zipties will fail over time.
@bradsouthers74762 күн бұрын
My thought on the tank seal would have been to route two parallel channels in the lid and matching ones in the base, both inboard (toward the opening) from the blind-tapped bolt holes. Then use RTV (for the fuel tanks) and food-grade silicone (H2O) to fill the grooves and assemble the lid to the base before it cures. Basically it would be a pair of custom O-rings creating the seal. Storing some spare tubes of sealant would be easier than spare gaskets and easier to replace. But since I'm sure I'm seeing these videos weeks or months after the fact, I expect that you've already moved way past the point where these ideas are helpful.

Awesome video, guys! I noticed you were using quite wide rubber seals for your fuel/water tank. Instead of using 6cm wide seals, consider using seals that are just wide enough to cover the screws, maybe screw width +5mm on each side. This will allow for less torque on screws, less plate bending, and will provide a better seal compression.

Bless you both for taking on this project, and, yes, it is and has been very interesting and illuminating. But, seriously, it is sometimes difficult to watch the struggles about the tankage. You have to be completely comfortable with the results, and we understand, but you should have considered bladder tankage for both water and fuel. Either built custom, or made by you, the effort would have been orders of magnitude less, much shorter completion times, and other advantages as well. Keep up the great work, thanks for sharing, and stay safe.

Congratulations on finally getting sealed tanks! Not to couch-captain here, but I always wondered why bladders wouldn't work for these tanks. Seems like an almost perfect solution for a situation where the structure may be flexing and expanding/contracting. They're also removable/replaceable and guaranteed food-safe without all the prep. And depending on the type, they generally expand to fill the space. I realize that connecting to bladders can be problematic, but that problem seems minor compared to all the others you've faced. Maybe those stringers would pose a major challenge, though. Can anyone comment on why bladders aren't a good solution here?

Reference your tanks. Another channel i watch is also doing tanks and mentioned having another access port to each tank without any pipework attached. This is because customs at any country you visit may insist on inspecting the tanks for anything that shouldn't be there. If the port has pipework fitted access may not be easy and/or you risk the pipework not sealing again when the inspection is complete. The port is also positioned such that a camera can see either side of any baffles.

Is a scuba respirator with remote air supply an alternative, alas more costly?
@Wrenchmonkey12 күн бұрын
@@peter572 There are forced fresh air hoods available that are meant for that purpose. Scuba regs would get really uncomfortable in a hurry, and would require an air compressor, only to be immediately stepped right back down to atmospheric pressure for no good reason. A simple filtered respirator is plenty, and they're inexpensive with no hoses or cords to get in the way. Forced air options are available, but they are pricy and have their own drawbacks, and are kind of overkill for this type of work.
