Taking a closer look at what was ultimately a fairly boring affair as the Buffalo Sabres got dummied 5-1 by the New York Rangers. We'll talk that and more in tonight's NHL hockey video!

Can’t wait for you to cover Gus Bus’ 41 save shut out. MN defense could’ve used some work. Trouble clearing the zone and often 5 on 5 looked like PKs and then there was Foligno taking a stupid penalty right as a previous PK was ending but all in all we got a Rookie goal and Ek scoring in the power play with Boldy getting a point for the assist to Faber. Scary game for MN but MN sports pretty much rely on miracles for the majority of their regular season bouts

Neutral zone trap makes for boring games. Its the reason the devils and lightning of the 2000s were so fucking boring to watch even though they won a lot. Honestly I do worry that level of shot blocking may not be sustainable over 82 games and hoping for sucess in thr playoffs as well. I know "every game counts" but seems like a recipe for a lot of injuries.

Yeah as a sabres fan this was not fun to watch. They looked out of sync. There was no flow at all. It was a combination of the puck hopping all over the place( maybe that's just me but the puck looked bouncy all game), missed passes, lots of rushes that they were outmanned on, and no sustained pressure. Kudos to the rangers. They used there 1-3-1 neutral zone defense to a T and caused a lot of those disruptions and all those blocked shots. They played well. Ah well... hopefully the next game is better for us.

Lafreniere didn't play all that bad. The team as a whole played very good. Tonight was a good night. There were still mistakes made. But none terrible and they recovered well. Hope they can keep it going, but it is an 82 game season with a lot of teams to play. I was surprised at Buffalo's play. Thought they would be more dynamic and faster.

I bet you 3 think he was the reason for the neutral zone turnover that he scored on and actually passed the puck to Panarin on Panarin's goal. Watch the replays and your initial beliefs would be proven wrong. Even though Michaletti for some stupid reason said Lafreniere caused the neutral zone turnover he was at the bottom of the screen no where's near the play and was fed a beautiful pass by Panarin as he stood unattended to the goalies right. He was the recipient of everyone elses hard work. But kudo's to him for being in the right spot. And Kudo's to him for being in the right spot to disrupt the Sabres trying to get the puck up the ice when Panarin scored but he didn't make that pass the puck bounced over his stick and the Sabre panicked and swiped the puck to Panarin. More luck then all out great play on those two plays. Yes he handled the puck well and wasn't puck watching as much as he usually does. So yes he didn't play all that bad.

The big difference I noticed between last night and last season (granted, just 1 game so far) was the team-wide support in the defensive zone. Last season, if a defenseman like Trouba lost the puck, he was all alone to defend the counter because every player couldn’t wait to get on the attack. They weren’t perfect last night but they supported each other positionally in the D zone which made mistakes far less deadly. Last night’s game showed more positional awareness, structure, and patience than last season and it was nice to see.

Watching this game as a neutral fan. Not taking anything away from the Rangers and their shot blocking clinic on the penalty-kill, but Buffalo's PP was ungodly predictable compared to what you see from the elite PP's in this league, like the Oilers, Leafs, Lightning. Slow puck movement to the outside, where Dahlin/Tage/Skinner took turns taking one timers. Need to move the puck faster, and utilize more of the ice to create space. The Rangers smartly just chilled in a triangle and paid the price physically with the shot blocks.

this has been buffalo problem for years... they want to market this "young and exciting" playstyle, which im certainly in favor for.. but when they go up against a defensive structure, they dont seem to be able to attack, or play with weight. you breakdown stationary neutral zone traps with speed and quickness, and if you do no like what you, you play the puck possession game, and restart. if you force passes into the locked system, you are doing exactly what the other team wants you to do. buy hey listen guys, may the hockey gods punish those to play a ice hockey that leeches the fun out of the product. im still a believer in this buffalo group, the only think i would want is another offensive big piece in their top 6, you need offensive depth to break down other teams, especially defensive teams.
