In Kalevala the bees are lifegivers. They can bring the honey from the God and bring back dead people. "They build their castles in the heads of Kings" and "Honey will flow once more" are just epic lyrics and tell about the resurrection. 💪

Amorphis is from Finland, like Wintersun and Nightwish from your past reactions. They started doing finnish folklore inspired death metal in 1990 and are still going strong. I think I saw them live first time ~25 years ago, in the late 90's, and many times after that. This song is from their 13th album Queen of Time, one of their best albums in my books. Tomi Joutsen, the current lead vocalist, is incredible! One of the best metal vocalists in my opinion, singing many types of growls as well as the beautiful cleans. Check out Amogst Stars from them, they have official video for that one and it features Anneke van Giersbergen in guest vocals.
@Idefixu

Anneke has been on stage with Amorphis as a guest. There's a video on YT. Marko Hietala, ex Nightwish, tours with Anneke this autumn in South America, in 8 countries, 20 acoustic concerts in 25 days. I don't know that they would have performed together before. They both have a set of their own first and then they sing together. The guitarist, Tuomas Wäinölä, from Marko's band is there too. I don't now if Tuomas plays with Anneke as well. As far as I know Anneke plays acoustic guitar herself. And Marko can play acoustic guitar too. And as a Dutch Anneke of course knows Floor, and Marko has been on stage with Amorphis as a guest, and Amorphis has toured with Nightwish as supporting act. Small circles!
@Arkryal

@@Idefixu Good tip on the concert. Don't know if I can make it to South America at that time, but maybe I can sneak a buddy of mine in there with a camera, lol. I love Anneke's work, even her softer solo stuff. I never did get to see The Gathering live, sadly, but she's amazing. As for Amorphis, I've been listening to them since the mid 90s. Their CDs used to come with the band's contact info and pricing for private shows (which if I recall correctly was like $10k + expenses or something ridiculously cheap like that), lol. They've clearly come a long way since then.

@@Idefixu I've seen Amorphis live on stage with Anneke at least once, I think twice. Anneke does also play guitar, I've seen her solo acoustic set two times as well. I've also seen her live with Devin Townsend few times. Would be nice to see Anneke with Marko, but luckily I just saw him with his band in Tuska Festival in the end of June.

Great reaction again! Although the lyrics are based on finnish epic folklore Kalevala, as always on Amorphis, you can take many more interpretations. Singer Tomi Joutsen answered when asked in interview about the lyrics of this song, that maybe it's just that the tiny one is the most important. They gather their forces to make something big...

"The bee is a prominent character in the Kalevala and features in moments of birth and resurrection. Once the world has been created we are informed: ‘“from the clouds dripped honey.’ The women of the north are coveted, not just for their beauty, but also for their culinary skills with honey: ‘she may bake honey bread, know how to brew beer.’ Shortly afterwards, ‘smith Ilmarinen was born’ and a ‘bee rose up from the ground… O bee, lightweight man, bring mead on your wing, carry honey on your tongue, from six flowery tips, from seven grass tops, for steel things to be made, for iron to be wrought… spill honey on the earth.’ Apparently, the bee is essential to the forging of the world. Lemminkäinen’s mother resurrects her son using honey-based potions and spells, collected from the underworld with the assistance of a bee. Her concoction includes a drop of mead brought to anoint the weary one, to tend the ill-befallen… O bee, bird of ours, king of the forest flowers, go now to fetch some honey and to find some mead… to heal the ill.’ The resurrection ritual continues: So it (the bee) comes panting, travels doubled up, all its wings drenched in mead, its feathers in melted honey. She, Lemminkäinen’s mother, took the ointments and anointed the weary one, tended the ill-befallen; but no help came from them, no words came to the man. Lemminkäinen’s mother’s does not despair: Bee, my little bird, fly that other way, right over nine seas to an island on the main, a honey mainland, to Tuuri’s new cabin, the Worshipful boundless one. There is pleasant honey there and good ointment there, which will suit sinews and be good for limbs. The bee obeyed: The honey was being cooked… in tiny cauldrons, in beautiful pans that would hold a thumb, fit a fingertip. The bee, slight man, got some of those ointments. Next, we learn: The Creator sang charms and the pure God talked, the lord anointed his brood inured by an evil power. Dip your wings in mead, and your feathers in melted honey. The bee laments its chances of completing the task and is told: You will get there easily, trip there handsomely, over the moon, underneath the sun, between heaven’s stars. For one day you will flutter to the moon’s brow-bones, for another you will whizz to the Great Bear’s shoulder blades, for a third you will soar up to the Seven Stars’ back; then ‘tis a mite of a way a tiny circuit to where God the holy lives to the blessed one’s dwellings. And so the bee flies to the ‘Almighty’s chamber’ and returns with the ointment that allows Lemminkäinen’s mother to successfully complete her son’s resurrection."

I have been saying for years (and will for many more years, probably), that Tomi Joutsen is one of the absolute best vocalists in today's metal scene. There's lots of singers who can do silky smooth cleans, and lots of singers who can do absolutely brutal growls/screams, but the ones who can do both impeccably are the ones you really gotta watch out for.
@Arkryal
@Arkryal 11 ай бұрын
A little background context on their songs. First you have to know the Kalevala. But here's a super-condensed, no-spoiler, background on it so the lyrics make sense. 1) The God, "Ukko" made everything. 2) There are lesser gods for everything. They literally are the thing which they are the god of... The god of the sea IS the sea. The god of the Mountains IS the mountain, etc. So these gods are everywhere and in all things. Everything is "alive" in that sense. They can take human or animal form, but seldom do. 3) The great heroes can use magic to be granted boons from these gods. But the gods respond to song, and favor the better singers. So in a magical duel between heroes, it's basically "Ye Olde Bardic Rap-Battle", lol. And now you see why so many musicians love this folklore, lol. In the Kalevala, which is a compendium of many smaller fables, you meet different heroes who have extraordinary but narrow abilities, and all the normal human vices. The Cast: Väinämöinen is the main protagonist for most of the story, the most powerful musician/magician, and the wisest. Think Odin meets Gandalf, lol. Ilmarinen is prominently featured. The mythic blacksmith, he created the sky in his forge, and can make many magical objects including the "Sampo", which is a device that could give riches, food etc magically (depending on who you ask, it's function is debated, lol). He's basically "Ironman", lol. Joukahainen is Väinämöinen's rival and the main antagonist. Lemminkäinen is a young upstart hero, a good fighter, extremely rash and unpredictable, prideful, but not a bad guy. Just overly cocky about everything. There are many other characters, but usually the songs are written about or from the perspective of one of these characters. "Tuneola" is the land of the dead. But unlike Heaven or Hell, it is a real physical place, an island off the shore where the spirits of the dead reside. Sometimes seen as a mirage, the living can see the island, but few can reach it. A lot of the songs won't make much sense unless you're familiar with the stories. But they do stand on their own apart from the source material, you just might not get all the little references, like killing the swan, chasing the firey steed, fishing up a gorgeous woman from the sea, or why people are talking to trees and mountains, etc. The Kalevala is in the public domain, you can get a PDF for free by googling it, and it's in almost any bookstore. It is a classic. If you enjoy any fantasy literature, RPG video games etc, they all tie back to this. It inspired Hans Christian Anderson, Tolkien, etc. But the English translations are a bit choppy. Still very readable though, but the poetry is not structured as it would be in English.

Amorphis is awesome. It goes over the heads of a lot of people in the US. Most of their songs are based on the Kalevala (a Finnish epic, along the lines of the Nordic Eddas, or the Greek Iliad and Odessey). But it doesn't translate very well to English. In fact, they have provided better translations in their lyrics than Elias Lönnrot (the original and definitive translator from over 100 year ago). But it's a very good read and is the origin of so much modern mythology. The notion of "Magic Words" comes from there. Mermaids. The flaming horse. Things you see commonly in media go back to that folklore. As for the band, I'd recommend "Tunoela" (brilliantly written). I also like the more recent track "My Name is Night", which is a simple song, but deceptively so... there are some subtle but technically challenging techniques used there.

You should also check out "Cares"... that's an interesting one. "The Way" is pretty good. "Silver Bride" is awesome if you know the background story... Doing no justice to the source material, the legendary blacksmith, Ilmarinen, who is alleged to have forged the sky itself is mourning the loss of his wife (the goddess of rainbows and a stone cold bitch, but that's a different story). So he decides to forge the most beautiful wife ever. He steals gold from the sun, silver from the moon, and sings a magical song to summon the 4 winds to breathe life into her. She is the most beautiful woman ever created, but her body is cold as metal, she doesn't have the soft throat to sing, despite her appearance of perfection, she is just an ornate pile of scrap. That story is commonly used as an allegory for vanity, even things like porn addiction, lol. But the song itself is just a retelling of the source story.

Once again, I am struck by the kindness of the metal community. Thank all of you so much for all of the suggestions. I have been listening all afternoon, choosing two versions -- live and official or lyric video--for each. Here's the deal. I'm very old, never listened to metal in my life before a few months ago. With this band, I really like their instrumentals, and the singer has a great clean voice. I just get hung up on the growls and the darkness of the lyrics. It may be just a case where I'm just too old to adapt. But, hey, I gave it a good go. I guess I'm just a Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Wintersun kind of lady. And, let me tell you, that's better than a lot of my contemporaries who don't listen to anything that isn't 50 years old. Appreciate your suggestions greatly.

If I may recommend a few more bands from Finland. Swallow The Sun - "Sleepless Swans" (Kai Hahto era) and Barren Earth - "Set Alight" You won't regret it 😊

From Amorphis, there are better songs imo. Not that this is bad song, but Shades of grey for example is awesome,. Under the red cloud... Beautiful as well. So many to pick from.

I wish I could sit down with you and experience 'Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor' with you. If you slept on this band, you're in for a real treat.
