Make sure you check out ‪@PaddyDoyle.‬ 's Best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai featuring yours truly:
• KHAO SOI Paradise in C...
Today I wanted to show you all, and remind myself, why I first fell in love in love with Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand 14 odd years ago.
First sto was Khao Soi Khun Yai, a khao soi institution on Chiang Mai's north gate. Khun Yai's was the first place I ever ate khao soi so it will always have a special place in my heart. Khao soi 50-70 baht.
Directions to Khun Yai:
goo.gl/maps/ijyFniZST2EGFNdm7
Next up we headed to Chiang Mai Gate Market to eat Sai Ua, Northern Thai sausage. This was actually the first thing I ever ate in Thailand! Sai Ua 100 baht, Cap Moo 100 baht.
Directions to Chiang Mai Gate Market:
goo.gl/maps/BrmzjW2rbczwBWdw8
Lastly we headed out to Huay Tung Tao Lake to eat dancing shrimp (goong ten) in some lakeside huts. Entrance fee: 50 baht, hut fee 20 baht PP.
Directions to Huay Tung Tao:
goo.gl/maps/3dH1pf2rTYuVXRFj7
Chapters:
00:00:00 Intro
00:01:24 Khao Soi
00:10:19 Sai Ua (Northern Thai Sausage)
00:17:10 The Lake
00:18:50 Dancing Shrimp
00:21:27 The Huts
Learn Thai with the method that I personally use at learnthaifromawhiteguy.com where you'll get 5 free lessons to see how great it is before you sign up. Use the code ROAM at the checkout to get 15% Off ANY COURSE.
This is a prime example of why I love Thailand so much. There’s just so much food to explore here! Whether you are in Chiang Mai Old City or around a lake you can always find amazing Thai food in Bangkok

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZbin channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I vividly remember my first khao soi in Chiang Mai. This was 30++ years ago when khao soi was unknown outside Thailand. I wandered into a Muslim joint on Chang Klan road (khao soi has its root in Muslim parts of China). The experience was stunning, mind-blowing, bordering on life changing! No idea if that modest restaurant is still there, probably not.

My mom told me Kao Soi Khun Yai was open when my mom was a young student. Now She is 62. And I sometimes rode a motor bike to eat that with my boyfriend in the afternoon (Luch break from work) 6-7 years ago before I moved to Lampang Last year my family went to Chiang Mai. I took my mom to this Kao Soi. There was full of tourists Farang, Chinese, Japanese. We had to sit with some Natherland Family. Kao soi is now popular dish for tourist. So happy to know that northern of Thai have popular Food after Tom Yum, Pad Thai, Som Tum, Kang Keaw Wan.

The first person who can invent TASTE A VISION will become a instant Billionaire if not Trillion air, you heard that right, if a man can go to the Moon no reason why you cant give me a sample of what your savoring. I am salivating and getting hungry watching, so time for some sampling sooner rather then later. I have visited Chang Mai 2 times and Chang Rai once and that did it I am a Khao Soi addict, I am ready to spend $15 for a huge bowel of it in SF, it hurts but its pretty tasty, the tip costs me more then 2 bowels you guys are eating. Amazing video Gary.

Ha .. I sat at that very table. The legend chef and her staff were overwhelmingly nice with smiles and poses as I took pictures and vids, doing my best not to annoyingly get in the way. Is it the best khao soi ever? I'm not the best with ratings. But is it at the top with other excellent khao soi I've had? No question. Thanks for the good memories, GB (and Paddy). See you soon!

Great video mate. I'm planning to more to Chiang Mai this year. Khao Soi is simply amazing. For those eating the live shrimp go easy the first time. I can eat any cooked seafood no problem. But I found out the hard way when I tried dancing shrimp in Laos that I'm allergic to the live version...I ended up with hands like blown up rubber gloves and my chest and neck was swollen. A bit of a worry but I sorted it out with an antihistamine.

Ha, funny. That market (maybe that exact stall - is that right at the front, near the road?) is where I had my first real Sai Ua, when we were in Chiang Mai a couple of years ago. It was indeed mind-blowingly good. Spicy, rich, lovely, moreish. I remember we'd been traipsing around CM in the sun for a long time and I was desperate for something to eat, so I thought "Hey, I'll give it a try." Oh, boy. What a treat! Nice, seeing this place again in your video.

I think that Khao Soi Kuhn Yai is a bit overrated. I know at least half a dozen shops in Chiang Mai that have Khao Soi that I prefer, often those with Burmese cooks. I also find that restaurants that make Nam Ngiao (น้ําเงี้ยว) often make spectacularly good Khao Soi also.

In fact, it should be said that I don't like thick coconut milk curry mixed with crispy noodles, which are oily and greasy. But I like other foods very much. I love eating SaiAow with hot sticky rice and crispy pork skin dip with young chili paste is so good! There is only Khao Soi that I can't really like. 😂

Hi Gary, I saw you on Paddy's show. I just came back from Chiang Mai on Saturday and had eaten at two of the khao soi places you mentioned. Great places. I also like a Muslim place in the old city but I don't remember the name. I have a sound question for you, please. I saw you in the BG in part of Paddy's video as you were vlogging and I could see you use an iPhone (or maybe it's an android) as I do. I have trouble getting good sound with my directional mic, as I don't like the look of lavs and occasional distortion. But it appeared you had no mic at all! But here in your video, even about a meter from the camera, your sound is very good. Can I ask you specifically what mic you are using? BTW, your Thai is really impressive. I've been taking online lessons and watching KZbin videos on and off for a couple years so I can put together many thoughts and be understood . . . but I can still barely understand a word. 555.
