I think it's more than FX realising he has lost XL to HC. FX is also held back by the feeling that he has no *right* to fight for him. He already abandoned him - how can he say "he's my friend, not yours" or "he's under my protection, not yours"? That's why FX and MQ keep fighting - guilt.

Okay here are my thoughts on Shi Qingxuan. Male SQX is besties with Xie Lian, while female SQX is besties with Hua Cheng. I find it interesting that their personalities are so different. Male SQX is the supportive friend, always standing up for Xie Lian, being humorously vain, etc. Female SQX likes to have fun and tease people. They literally DO NOT feel like the same person. They're functionally two characters that switch off and share the same pool of memories. Also, they appear to be genderfluid. When SQX is in a particular form, people use he/him or she/her, but when referring to them in general, they use they/them. They/them was used in S1 and other S2 eps as well. Xie Lian used they/them even before he learned that Wind Master has a male form.

It’s more like they all have the ability to change forms, but most are only comfortable with the form they ascended in while others like changing depending on the day, mood, etc. The way their worshipped also has an affect. SQX is mostly worshipped as a woman, so she really likes going to the mortal world in her female form. Ling Wen, on the other hand is mostly worshipped as a man, so he uses his male form when communicating with followers and hanging out with his guy friends, and uses her female form for everything else.
