Day 371 of posting a cool animal fact: Today's fact is about the horror frog AKA the hairy frog or the wolverine frog! There are two very unique things about this frog. First of all, it has hair! Male horror frogs will grow hair on their sides during the breeding season! Though this isn't hair like our hair, it's really strands of skin! Male horror frogs must guard their eggs underwater for days on end without ever coming up for air, so the bristles allow him to get more oxygen so he doesn't drown. Secondly, horror frogs have bone claws! When threatened, they flex their foot muscles which causes their toe bones to break, forming sharp spikes on the end of their toes which tear through their skin (which is how they got the name wolverine frog)! These are formidable weapons and can certainly pack a punch against any unsuspecting predators!
