All I remember from our entry into what became the EU was one boss telling us they can buy the parts from Spain cheaper than we can buy the steel to make them, and then a career change. Someone screwed the small engineering companies in N.I. and the UK and now the places I used to earn a living in are Charity warehouses or Gyms.

When that big impact rotor was chucked up and spinning I couldn't help but picture a comically oversized dial indicator going on the tool post. That live center is a stud. Lol

Great video, wonderful and unexpected ending. Wow. Always a treat to see the big tooling at work. I greatly appreciated your framing the work relative to economic forces - never would have made the connection had you not shared this !

I worked for a company here in Australia that had the largest lathe in Southern hemisphere which used to be owned by the Vickers Cockatoo Island dockyard, it was used for turning ships prop shafts and power station generator armatures from all over Australia and south-east Asia I thoroughly enjoy your videos thanks for sharing 👍

I was in NSW FOR 5 weeks in 2015 and I just discovered the lathe in cockatoo when I got home it's deffo on the bucket list. I hope they keep it preserved

@allistairc123 Don't know about that the last time I saw it was dismantled in the back of a shop in Smithfield NSW the company is Australian Winch and Haulage that owned it then forgive my spelling BTW 🙄

Amazing! There are very few sources where we can see the Large Industrial side of machining. Lots of moderate size machine shop stuff, and a few larger machines like Brian Bloc's big Monarch lathe, but nothing on the scale you just showed!!! Incresible! Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦

Republic Industries in Louisville, Ky had one bigger than that. Not sure what happened to it when they closed up shop. Atlas in Louisville has a 78"x275" lathe now. There is a 12ft x 54ft for sale in Cincinnati if you want to get a bigger one. 🙂
