It's worth noting that the "samba school competition" you're referring to is a multimillion-dollar spectacle that happens once a year, over two days, typically in February. It's incredibly beautiful, and it's a fierce competition. I'd recommend going to the Rio samba parade at least once in your lifetime, it's an amazing experience. If anyone's interested, just search youtube for keywords like "rio carnival parade (desfile) 20xx". Personally, I'd recommend watching Grande Rio's 2022 parade or Viradouro's 2020 parade, these are two of the most beautiful parades of this century IMO.

They are part of our culture, and can be found all over Brazil, not just Bahia, as you've seen in Rio. If you're really interested, you should visit a terreiro and interview someone. Nowadays it isn't difficult to find people that speak english and are part of these traditions! Heeey, it's me again. :D As always, hope it is a fun read to whoever is interested. 0:33 Where I live in Brazil, those are called "porongos". They are fruits from the porongueiro, and they do like squases yeah haha. We use them for making certain musical instruments, for example the xequerê (very used in african-related religious rituals), banjos, kalimbas, drums, and our famous berimbau used in capoeira... Also many, many arts and crafts. Where I live, in Rio Grande do Sul, we make a lot of bird houses with them, gourds for carrying drinks and cuias (a cup-like half cut porongo) for drinking chimarrão (a hot drink made with yerba mate, which is commonly planted here and sold to the rest of the country and for which we are instantly recognized by... Alongside our barbecue). There is also the tererê, the cold and sweetened version of chimarrão, probably far easier to find where you are. Give it a try if you want, it's a lovely drink to carry around in Brazil in both versions. Here in RS family and friends go to park in large groups with a cuia and plenty of water (either hot or very cold, depending on the choice of drink of the day), and we sit down on the grass or on a bench as the drink is poured and exchanged from hand to hand while we talk. Long long ago, around 1830, there was an internal war happening in the RS (because of heavy government taxation for many producers) and sharing the chimarrão with people as a gesture of trust because a tradition since then. The lord or lady of the house would prepare it, then drink the first pour whole (to show it was not poisoned), then share from the same cuia and water with the visitors. Offering a chimarrão to family and friends became a widespread habit, and stands strong even now. You literally can't find a single home here without a large thermos specifically for that purpose, and people do drink it daily. It is a powerful metabolic regulator, not unlike green tea. Usually each family has a trademark cuia... It can be simple and traditional, made of a polished porongo. It can be a modern one made with ceramic. It can be decorated with metal and studded with delicate jewels, bought from an actual jewelry store. It can be painted with your favorite soccer team emblem's and colours... There are all kinds. Mine is pyrographed with images that refer to the landscape of RS, most notably our horses, our wine production, and our araucária trees. I always decorate the top the drink with fresh flowers, if I can. It always makes people smile. :) 2:50 Here in Brazil, probably due to our party culture, it's very easy to buy and find commemorative fireworks of all kinds. Some of them are not even for the visual aesthetic, but rather for producing sound. What you heard was an "estalinho", which is **incredibly easy and cheap** to find. Like, you can buy a box with 1000 for as cheap as 40 reais, so it's a very unexpensive way to celebrate. Also, it's also MUCH safer to handle than actual fireworks. Like, you can literally smack one directly on your skin and it doesn't hurt (the common practice is throwing it on the floor so it starts cracking). which makes them an easy choice for most people. People buy them in commemorative days like water. They produce a sequence of cracking and popping sounds every Brazilian instantly recognizes, but as it is not a very common pick in other countries, where fireworks that produce light or smoke are far more common (and people aren't as used to standing out and loud in public in general) so I can understand why the sound would make you jump if you don't know what they are. 😅 9:25 The entirety of the fancy yearly presentation in Rio, in the "Sanbódromo", which we are so internationally famous for in TV, is exactly that. That's the highest point of the competition. It's not just people dancing. Every samba school parades a an entire story woven around a chosen theme, and it influences everything in their presentation from the clothes to the music. Every different section of the parade tells about something different within that theme. There are judges for aspect of it. It's very interesting to watch if have a way to translate the lyrics for the songs written by each school that year, also called "samba-enredo" (lit. samba-plot/scenario/story). They are released in advance to the public, during the "warm up" weeks before the actual show begins, so everyone who might be interested can learn them in advance. It's definitely a sport! XD 10:43 Saint George, also known as George of Cappadocia and George of Lydda, was, according to tradition, a soldier Roman in the army of Emperor Diocletian, venerated as a Christian martyr. Regarded as one of the most prominent military saints, and one of the few venerated by the Catholic, Orthodox **and** Anglican Churches. It is said he was killed in 303 AD. because he would have refused to kill and persecute Christians - a direct order from Diocletian, then Roman Emperor. He is depicted usually as warrior mounted on a horse, wielding a spear before a dragon spitting fire, as a way to encompass his story of resolute integrity before an enemy much more powerful than himself. In Brazil, he's seen widely a protector of the innocent, of those who choose to not fix the wrongs of the world with blind violence, and as someone one prays to give strength when facing our own dragons, so we won't falter or become monsters ourselves due to life's many hardships. Definitely a Saint whom with Brazilians, who often struggle with corruption, and as a people who try to understand and welcome new cultures, respect and identify with. My greatgrandma's home has iron window stoppers fashioned after his helmet, and he was always in her prayers. She was the first woman in her family to decide to move to the city and work, all alone, despite of her parent's protests. Having a small figure of Saint George is pretty much staple in my family so far, due to her history. We wouldn't be here otherwise, and it's good to remind ourselves there's much good we can do, and much we can change in our lives, even when fell so small. Hold out your hear like an unbreakable lance and you shall vanquish a dragon yourself. 13:20 Oh no, I hope it doesn't bruise! Watch out, sidewalks in rainy cities can be very tricky. It's easy to find stuff in need of repair because of water damage, and ofc, the manholes are usually the first to go. 🥺 Hope this makes an interesting read! See you next time.

If you like markets like this one, you should definitely visit Central Market (Mercado Central) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It was founded in 1929, has over 400 stores, and it has an information service in portuguese and english where you can book a guided tour. In 2016, it was voted the 3rd best market of the world, only behind Mercat de la Boqueria in Barcelona and Borough Market in London. For sure it warrants a visit there and a video too. Tips from a local: I used to go there on Sunday mornings with my dad and I would eat a pastel de carne with coffee and he would eat fígado com jiló (liver with scarlett eggplant - not sure on the translation for jiló) with a cold beer; we would always eat standing up because it was so packed full that there was no seating available.

Try to visit the Island of Paquetá (Ilha de Paquetá), you guys can take a boat 'Barca' at Praça XV (Rio downtown area) and go to the island, its a very carioca thing to do in the weekends.

The gourd (cabaça) is a fruit of northeastern origin, you can eat the fruit that comes inside sautéed and you can use the shell for decoration, lamps or put water to set with a root or plant flavor.

I am very happy to see you guys so interested in the african-brazilian religious tradition. Since you guys mentioned you're coming to Bahia, there are some places in Salvador where you could learn a lot more about this: Fundação Pierre Verger (Pierre was a French photographer who studied the african-brazilian culture deeply, and has a vast work depicting the religious aspect of it); Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado (Jorge Amado was a reowned writer from Bahia, and his work is filled with references regarding the african-brazilian culture and religion as well). Try and visit a terreiro de candomblé - that's some sort of religious temple, and there you will be able to really see how it works and to talk to people who profess that faith. There are many terreiros in Salvador, some of them very famous and with easier access to you guys; just ask a local. Anyways, Salvador was built on African blood; you will find African roots everywhere - from religion to food. Hope you guys have a great trip and can't wait for the videos! Axé!

If you guys or any non-Brazilian viewer is curious about the samba school competition you've mentioned, here's an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaeannSfYrirmqs&ab_channel=OZZNER Each samba school has a lot of different "thematic groups" of school members parading with their costumes and big cars that together represent a bigger story that the samba school is trying to tell each year. These stories are sung by the schools while the school members are parading in what is called a "samba-enredo", basically a samba song being sung repeteadly while the school is on the parade.

Also I don't know if that was clear for you but the "competition" or league doesn't happen at those school, but at a specific "field" or stadium, basically a large "street" with a place for the crowd to watch while the schools parade. One thing foreigners don't understand about Rio is: nothing in Rio de Janeiro is made for foreigners. The suburbs have way more robberies, and even at touristic places, criminals aren't there just to target foreigners. Even our touristic economy isn't aimed at foreigners, it's about Brazilians from other states. When I am at a fancy restaurant Ipanema and I hear another language, we are still surprised to see a gringo. The daily life in Zona Sul is purely carioca, medium class and above of course, but it isn't less original than the suburban life. Heck, most people you see in Zona Sul are probably from Zona Norte!

I very much enjoy watching your videos. It attempts to show Brazil in a more positive light than what the "Anglo" media normally does. Madureira is well know because of the "mercadão" but there are a lot nicer districts (bairros) in the north zone than Madureira. Also, the south zone is not for tourists. It is a party of Rio just like the rest of the city. It is simply where the more affluent people live.

I wouldn't dare to go by myself to most suburbs even if it hasn't a favela. And beware of manholes here because not long ago we had several manhole explosions. Just falling into one would be less traumatic.

When you go to Ipanema try the açaí from the restaurant called "New Natural" located at Rua Barão da Torre, 173. They have the best açaí in my opinion. I mean açaí mixed only with guaraná natural like you had from Mega Matte, but i think it's better than mega matte ones.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of afro-brazilian religion is it's not exclusive for black brazilians. A lot of white brazilians partake in it, even middle class high ones. There is also Kardecism which is very popular among the middle class.

You guys were so excited about the religious part that could visit umbanda :p I'm Brazilian and I'm very curious about it. Since my family is protestant I've never been in any place like that. "This is like Real Madrid or something" YES kkkkk it's serious like that in Rio. There are families with a whole tradition from older generations to the younger generations in a samba school. I know a family like that when it comes to Portela. And another friend whose mom is a seamstress for the school, her father is a composer, she's one of those muses, her brother dances too... When I see some gringos talking about the naked ladies, the colors etc. I think "damn... They don't know how serious this is LOL". This naked muse has an a grade for the school on her shoulders xD she HAS to be flawless.

You should go to samba train. It is a samba party in a train. The event is every year At december 2th (nacional samba day). The train departs from central station with many groups inside playing samba and arrive in Oswaldo Cruz (place close to Madureira), where there is a big samba party until next Day early...

I am from Rio. Leaving the south zone (Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo, etc) and heading north zone will show you the lifestyle of the common avg-low pay grade carioca citizen. You should take a clear sky day to visit the redeemer Crist monument, the sugar loaf cable car, try hang gliding at Pedra Bonita, visit Paquetá island (a small island in the middle of the bay with no cars). Don't miss these, guys.

Yes, it is a common theme for foreigners to think there is a kind of show or Rio is made for tourism when reality is: 98% of people you see there, live in Rio state. And way less than 1% come from abroad.

Go have a walk in Rio branco avenue! I'd say it's the carioca's Paulista Avenue, but with less things to do. It's close to cinelandia It's historic and there are a few interesting museums such as the Fine Arts and Biblioteca Nacional

Brazil has so much more to see than the things they try to sell on postcards and generic Instagrams pages I'm not a specialist on Samba schools, but I think somethings got mixed-up on translation The competition between schools are not indoor, they're in the Sambódromo. Every school decides on a theme for their presentation, prepare costumes and "Carros alegóricos", then they present one by one on the Carnaval. On a later date the judges present their scores. The parade and score presentation areso big and important to samba school fans and neighborhoods, that the special/first division from SP and RJ actually get TV time. The winner usually throws a big party Said that, samba schools do have some intern/indoor competition to determine who's gonna be the next X role on the parade
