DELICIOUS Brazilian BBQ churrasco in Minas Gerais countryside 🇧🇷

A local Brazilian guy (now our friend), Paulo, invited us to his house for a Brazilian BBQ churrasco.
So he picked us up from Ouro Preto towards his town in Itabirito.
We treated the journey like a mini road trip...stopping at several locations; for Pakistani ice cream, pastel de angu, and a bizzare local shop.
Itabirito is in between Ouro Preto and Belo Horizonte. And this small town has got the nicest, most hospitable people! First, Paulo and his son treated us to a delicious churrasco (Brazilian food). Then we went on a jabuticaba hunt, and met the neighbors.

I work with a lady from Minas Gerais and one time I was visiting her, she started making pão de queijo, she had blocks of cheese in her house and she began grating a couple different ones for it. She said it was the real pão de queijo and I loved it so much, she introduced me to a lot of good brazilian food too

Actually, here in Brazil, we have a typical dish similar to the Mexican Tamales. It’s called Pamonha, is also wraped in corn leaves and generally have cheese inside. You really should try it. Thank you for showing the culture and food of MInas to the world!

Do you know jabuticaba is a native Brazilian fruit? So much so that when we say something is a "jabuticaba brasileira" we mean it's something unique to Brazil. We all have childhood memories of how funny it is to climb one of those trees, going up after the bigger and sweeter ones. So, Steve, you climbing up that jabuticaba tree might be the most Brazilian thing you ever did hahaha

Now that's what Minas Gerais is all about! Small cozy towns with the nicest people! I was born in Rio, but I live in Minas for more than a decade now... Minas just won my heart! Come to Diamantina if you have the opportunity... It one of the richest city in the world regarding culture and history.

I feel so happy when I see foreigners coming to Brazil and enjoying their time around here! I have lived in Canada in 2014 and now I live in Foz do Iguaçu (state of Parana, Brazil), we have here one of the largests waterfalls and hydroelectric dam in the world, besides a great Bird Park, triple frontier and other activities around. I hope you can visit Foz do Iguaçu, I'm sure you will love the city. And by the way, if you come to Foz do Iguaçu, I'm willing to help you guys with anything you need (including transportation when needed and free entrance to some tourist attractions in the city, because I work with tourism and I have this benefit). Jaboticaba is something that every brazilian respect. If you have a jaboticaba tree in your house, you have a tresure. When people renovate old houses with those trees, NO ONE would DARE to put it down for ANY reason. On jaboticaba season, people harvest BUCKETS and share with their neighbours.

Hi! There's a sandwich in Brazil called "X-tudo", it means X with the pronunciation of "cheese" and "Tudo" meaning Everything. It's probably one of the most commons sandwichs in Brazil and you can find it in every small town. Ask someone where you can find a GOOD X-tudo and try it! :)

As someone born and bred in small towns, I give you major kudos for getting some Brazilian small town action. I've seen a few travelogues from foreigners, but very few go beyond the larger cities and the better known tourist spots. This is the sort of environment where your friendliness pays off handsomely. Also, not sure if you meant to do it, but Steve sounded very Brazilian calling Ivana "coração". That's a normal way to address a loved one, kinda like "honey" in English. As for the jabuticabas, don't loose hope! I'm sure you'll be able to find some. I myself have a bowl full of them in my fridge, that were picked up this very week from the jabuticabeira (that's the jabuticaba tree - a ton of fruit trees have their names finished in "eira") in my backyard. Since you were talking so much about tamales, i have some NEWS for you. Brazil actually has our own tamales. They are called "pamonha" and you can find them both sweet and savory and Minas is famous for them (as is the state of Goiás). You should definitely try pamonha if you love tamales!

Jabuticaba is by dar my very favorite fruit. It's seasonal and the tree takes about 17 years to muture and produce fruits. It's very native from Belo Horizonte region and I believe you can find it in some produce fairs at this time. But the beat thing is to go to a ranch or house that has a jabuticaba tree and collect them right at spot. Try to find one tree.

Congrats, guys. Even with the language barrier you guys are getting the real Brazilian experience. Most foreign only portrait the beaches, favelas, samba, etc...which is just a fraction of what the country really is. Any plans to visit other regions? I guess you guys would have a good time visiting Northeast like the Lençois Maranhense, Olinda,etc...or the most southern region where you could meet the Gaucho culture and also my home city, Curitiba. Pastel de angu is definitely a very minas food (and I like it more than regular pastel too). There’s a small cafe in BH that makes a torresmo and kale one and it’s amazing.
