The decline of the forests is also exactly what led to the hominid family growing, bipedal motion being ideal for moving between dwindling forests and across grasslands. One planet of the apes dies for the next to rise.

Paired with a gradual shift toward a more aquatic lifestyle, an upright posture made fishing/seaweed harvesting more viable. Easy, abundant food sources are a great driving force for evolution. I mean, most primates climb so well because fruit grows high up, and predators stay down low. We just outclassed the predators, allowing us to pursue other foods.

we almost got extinct for the same reason about 900 K years ago : glaciation + dryier climate. we succeed after that because humanity learn to use fire so cooler climate would no longer be an extinction cause.
