If there isn’t a pick up buoy on the mooring bouy, the easy way to do it is to use a lasso. Take both ends of a long and heavy mooring warp and cleat them to the boat with ‘figure of eights’, which can always be undone even under load. Pass the large loop of rope out over your bow roller and then back aboard over the rails. The foredeck crew should now divide the loop of rope into two even handfuls and, when the helmsman brings the boat to a halt, cast the rope out and over the buoy. As the rope settles and sinks, back away from the buoy and the rope will pull tight around the chain/rope beneath the buoy. Once you have your temporary connection, take a long warp from the bow to the buoy, release the stern and allow the boat to swing. Finally, pull the bow up to the buoy and secure through the bow roller to the pennant or eye. Unless you deploy a stern anchor there is not much you can do to stop the "bings" unless the mooring bouy can be brought on board which is normally unlikely. With a stern anchor you may not lie well to wind or tide so local conditions will dictate what you do. Practice until you are proficient, you'll be surprise how quickly you'll master this. In wind and or a tideway you'll have to think through the best way to approach the bouy in a controlled manner.

There used to be a 1 story shack where the 3 story building is right at the end of the St. John dock. It had stones out front with a couple picnic tables, and there was no gate or building on the dock. My dad was involved in the St. John Pub that was there throughout the 1980s that sold subs, hotdogs, cold beer and mixed tropical drinks to the tourists. I used to go over to St. John and have lunch at The Backyard on some Saturdays, that was practically all traveling by road on that island I did in the years I was there. When I was 12 dad bought me a 13 foot Boston Whaler with a 55hp and besides the other 4 boats he had I used to use it to go to St. John once in a while. A couple times was to Trunk where we visited our schoolmate that lived in the house on the peninsula that you see. She used to travel to St. Thomas to go to school and back every day. My best friend's dad owned the largest dump truck on St. Thomas during the time they were moving the Eastern mountain to off the end of the runway extending it. His driver was dropping a load off the end, lost control and jumped out just in time to see it sink into the end of the runway. Time, resources, etc dictated that they just keep going. So when you land there, you are landing on a dump truck. December 1989 through Jan 1990 I helped put the flat roof on the new airport terminal. White guys who hired me got fired for fist fighting the day before I came down to take the job, and I spent three days doing nothing, with the exception of checking the caps that held down the flat roof that had already been done. I think I counted 173 that weren't fastend. I told the guy who came down from Florida to take over the job, but he didn't seem concerned. I have no idea if it passed inspection. My family of 6 including 2 of my grandparents were scheduled on the American Airlines flight that crashed on the island in 1976 running into a Shell gas station at the end of the short runway. My mom had a dream, and rescheduled us for a week earlier with all the work and changes made for dad's 3 stores to run for 2 weeks. We were at Magens when it crashed. A call went out for the 2nd most rare blood, AB-, which my father had. My dad said he wasn't taking time out from his vacation to donate blood. Read the karma my dad died to on that island 14 years after that crash, in this book with links below. I've probably been on more cruise ships than anyone reading this, yet never been on a cruise. My dad ran a ship chandlery that had a monopoly on selling liquor to the cruise ships in the early '80s, that I used to spend my afternoons after school doing my homework at, that was located at the last building on the Havensite dock (has Senior Frogs painted on its roof). After growing up on the island and starting when I was 17 in late 1986, we used to roam Charlotte Amalie downtown streets at night bar hopping Coconuts, Rosie O'Grady's, The Ritz, Yesterdays, then to the Greenhouse at 10pm for the current live band, when everyone was partying in the islands. Since the bars closed at 2 AM we would go out to steal cars, usually rentals, and race across the island, afterward sometimes stripping them for parts. I've floored it in a brand new 1987 Accord LXi from the Fort all the way to Frenchtown one night easily doing 100mph, which was not unusual to do with stolen cars but sometimes done even with the ones we sort of cared about. I hold the record for most boats stolen in one night while alone; three - I took them to a birthday party. Picking up a ball is easy, float up to it grab the pendant and it will bring up the eye. Then make a bridle out of two lines to either side of the boat like you would with an anchor snubber. I use one line for each side of the boat like an endless line. That way if one slips or breaks we then just swing to one side and then the ball will Bing on the boat hull (like you are hearing) to help you fix it. Some people put out short bit of mainsail tightly to make a wind vane approach so the boat just keeps itself into the wind. I have been known to dive on a ball just to make sure it is solid and the lines are good. In USVI most are Gov owned and are well done and if parks are closed they are free. I have hung 45+ Cats on balls where you are (look at top it tell you what size it can hold) and been fine (no anchor watch). Enjoy, wish I was there but start looking for a Hole in case the storms roll in (BVI) has some good ones over around Stooper's. If you go back to Megan there is an Ice Cream factory just 10 min walk up the road from beach head that is outstanding. My favorite is Run Rasien and I make a shake with Dark rum..... There is a good provision store, just across from the dingy dock at Redhook next to Ferry Dock. Short cab ride to a Costco if you need it.

I know you've gotten plenty of tips about the mooring balls but my two cents is to pick the ball up on the deck if you can and tie to the line so nothing can bang against the hull, but you'll figure out what works for you on your boat. Yes to all this. Even with a pick up buoy we often found dropping the loop over the main buoy easier. Works so easily to give the time to then attach in a more permanent way appropriate to the style of mooring.

You boat is riding the mooring ball. This is a result of wind and currents and the fact that you have a keel. The current catches the keel but the wind is blowing in a different direction. This condition can be problematic. The ball can actually wear a hole through the hull. That would take some time however. It will definitely effect the gelcoat if it continues to happen. One possible short term fix is get the widest (in circumference) fender you have and run the mooring pennant through the middle of it so the end of the fender is up against the eye of the mooring ball. That may help to keep the ball from continuously rubbing against the hull. Great video!

Hello Beau and Brady, Great Vid ya'll! Regarding the mooring, you can try tying the ball closer, but this is not a good idea if there is 15kts or more wind. Make sure you use two lines to the mooring, one line for each side of the bow. The exit and return should be on the same side for each line. If you put the line on from one side to the other it could saw the mooring line in two putting you on a reef. But, in the end without a good current or wind there is nothing you can do about the mooring hitting the boat. If you have current with a light wind, this is the worst. In the end, there is not much you can do except pray for a bit more wind to pull you away from the mooring ball. Fair Winds!!

Mooring ball against the hull I've seen happen when the current opposes the wind. Sometimes just locking the rudder to one side will do the trick. Sometimes it won't. You can pull the ball in so tight that it is raised out of the water which might help, or extent the lines which might cause a tangle but where you are it's just another excuse for a swim. :)

Here's the cure for the boat sitting on top of the mooring, driving you nuts with the constant banging.... don't use moorings where the current will switch against the breeze. Use those just for lunch stops or snorkel stops, then go further into Francis Bay or along the W St John coast north of Cruz bay for overnight. Go get all your shopping done in Charlotte Amalie and then head back to Magens, always peaceful and calm unless a north swell is coming down with a cold front.

During the tourist season the beach is packed, you have to wait until after 4 when everyone leaves (or get up REALLY early) then you can go in and have a nice stroll. And you won't think it's so calm when a cold front is on the way and a 3 foot NW swell rolls in, that's when I go around and anchor W of the airport.

I never trust moorings even new ones. I like to dive on them and run a line through the mooring block and back up to the vessel, tie both strands off to a bow mooring cleat so that it can be loosened easily and retrieved. More than one boat has gone ashore through a mooring failure. Usually it is the polypropylene rope that fails--abrasion or shark nibble the usual cause.

This would be the reason this is our first time morning in a year and a half. We trust our anchor more than any mooring ball. We did dive ball later that day. Interesting thought to tie it off to the block. It was shallow enough to do that here.

As a singlehander I have a hoop of 3/4" 3 strand Nylon that closes with a big snap shackle. I cleat it off to the bow forward and just throw it over the mooring..There is some skinny old firemans hose chafe protection on the hoop. If its blowin like heck I may leave it for the night...But its so easy especially in bad weather....G.T. Silver Fantasy

Welcome to the Virgin Islands. Some suggestions for moorings: 1. Don't tie to the ball - put your line(s) thru the pennant only. 2. Don't pull the mooring pennant up onto your boat - only your lines should be on your boat. 3. Putting a line on the mooring ball only causes trouble/damage. Chafes lines and causes tangles. 4. Mooring bouncing against your boat has four causes - (I) you did one the above; (ii) your lines aren't long enough; (iii) the current is opposed to the wind and is pushing you against the mooring; and (iv) no wind. Can't do much about iii and iv except move to another spot. 5. If you want to overnight on a mooring, loop the center of your line thru the pennant and bring the ends back to the boat. It will stop the creaking and squeaking noises, and reduce chafe on your line. You'll sleep better. Please use moorings when available, as they reduce damage to sealife caused by anchors, which can be very bad. If your not sure how well the mooring is maintained, take a dive on it before leaving your boat or spending the night. Will look for you in Magens Bay from the roads above. Boyd

There is a much easier way. Never fails. No boat hook required. 1) Come up slowly to the ball, ideally into the current 2) Have 25 foot line tied both ends to a foredeck cleat under the lifelines. 3) Find mid-point (loop) and bundle up two to three coils 4) Lasso the ball by throwing circle out and and over the ball 5) Launch dingy to tie two lines 6) Remove your lasso line

I think they are called rock lobster. If you shorten up your lines on the mooring ball to where it is just below the bow it won't come back along side the hull and drive you nuts!! From personal experience!!!

Though Beau is such a physical guy, great body and great eyes, I am certain he could lift you on his shoulders and tread water at the same time and also video himself doing this. I have a 11 foot Zodiac and could never pull myself up into it, so I had a rope ladder anchored from transom and mounted over the front of the boat. I do have weak arms, cannot even do a press up, but I could lift the boat bag and motor at 30 kgs each.Stay safe.

Fishing. When you see birds like that, they are feeding on small fish. Fish that have been hearded by something bigger. So first part of the eco system is birds, then bait fish, then palagics, and at the very bottom the grazers. Like Schnapper. You are in a bay. Might be worth target fishing for fun, but out side the bay & coastal you can target what you want. Schnapper you would send a bait to the bottom with a lead sinker. Eough for now I hope that helps a bit.

Earl is absolutely correct. There are bigger fish chasing the bait up to the surface so if you have a spinning outfit throw on a lure (surface plug or whatever) and cast into the mix. You will most likely hook up something, perhaps even dinner! Good luck!

The dolphins are great. 1 little comment, when tying up to a moring leave about 6 to 10 ft slack to the ball so the ball does not rub the hull of your boat. Great video. You all are great

Grenada and Carriacou are now welcoming registered yachts under new protocols. Yacht arrivals began in mainland Grenada on Wednesday May 20 and in Carriacou from Monday May 25. As required, the entering yachts were all pre-registered into the GRENADA LIMA database before being given pre-clearance. On arrival at the designated dock at Camper & Nicholson’s Port Louis Marina, Ministry of Health officials conduct screenings, including temperature testing for yachts passengers who then proceed on the requisite 14-day quarantine at approved locations. At the end of the quarantine period, crew will be given formal clearance by Immigration and Customs, only after receiving a negative COVID-19 test result and health clearance from the Ministry of Health. Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curwen says, “The Cabinet and National COVID-19 Response Team are satisfied that the implemented health and safety protocols will allow yachts a safe-haven in Grenada for the Hurricane Season, while ensuring the safety of all citizens, and contributing to the rebound of our economy.” Meantime, Grenada has welcomed four batches of repatriated cruise workers in the last two weeks. All workers have been screened, quarantined and tested for COVID-19. The last batch of 45 came in on Sunday and the Ministry of Health reported that one of them tested positive for COVID-19 bringing the number of confirmed cases recorded in Grenada to 23 with 5 still active but stable cases. Hey Donovan, let's cut em a little slack here. They live in Florida, and since they are boaters they've probably heard and said "Panama City" quite OFTEN. It is a word they're used to saying and hearing on weather reports and other state news I would suspect. They've probably mentioned sail trips to the South Pacific which could mean discussing going through the "Panama Canal" or around South America. In that part of the world and Florida Panama hats are worn quite often. Until very recently I can't ever recall in my life the word "pandemic" rolling off my own tongue. It's likely I have used it (re zombie flicks) but if I did it certainly wasn't often. Again, living in Florida saying "pan" as a first syllable of any anything coming off the lips could understandably be "pana" something if you're conditioned to hearing and saying "Panama."

...for what it's worth - My opinion only - I would rather hear the actual sounds of the scene (swimming with the dolphins)... The "music" you chose to go along with that scene was extremely distracting, bordering on annoying... Just my thoughts - as a production music composer... Would have much rather heard the natural sounds going on at the time... otherwise - great time!
