The stich up interview is nothing new for Skynews (Murdoch). A while ago, the government were going to give the unemployed a cash bonus ($50 or so). On a tv debate, a member of the audience posed the following statement in favor of the bonus, "With that money I could take my two daughters out to eat, pizza or whatever." This drew a round of applause and sympathy for him and didn't bode well for the government opposition. The next day, there was an article in the paper of the man's criminal record of 10 years earlier and vilified him as just a common criminal on Skynews. Anything that puts the Liberal party (Australian version of Republican party) in a bad light is squashed by Skynews as quickly as possible.

Suing in Australia. Sorry to say Ryan but our legal system works a little differently than in the USA, and suing is one area that has legislation to prevent people from profiting from injuries. As a result, if you are injured and sue, the amount you will receive is capped to an expected cost of treatment. Having a universal coverage medical system has helped both the insurers and the legal system define the limits of these costs. One purpose was to limit people intentionally doing stupid things to get hurt (for example walking on a wet floor that doesn't have a warning posted), so they can sue. Another was to prevent nuisance court cases clogging up the legal system, by streamlining people from taking action to receiving the help they need, which can be delayed if those being sued appeal. This means the lady injured at Coles is not going to become a millionaire from the what she described. Knowing big corporate here, she might be lucky to get a discount on her next shop.

What do y’all think? - asks the maker of the pizza. Well, first thing. Australia may seem like the Alabama of the British Empire to many, but we don’t say ‘y’all’. Sorry Americans from the more southern states - When most English speakers hear y’all, they also hear duelling banjos and start to look around for people in overalls with double-barrelled names who married their sister trying to catch them from behind, if you know what I mean. And yes. I understand that having the word ‘you’ being both plural and singular is unlike many other languages. But the proper Australian solution is ‘youse’, not ‘y’all’. As in - ‘what do youse think?’ It’s just as grating to anyone who was taught to ‘speak proper’ but it’s Australian.

Interestingly I went to K-mart and bought some cloths then went to Coles. At Coles I bought a paper bag and when at the check out scanned the paper bag. I then put everything I bought from K-mart in the bag before scanning the items I was buying from Coles. It wasn't until after I left the store that I realised the system should have thought I was putting things into the bag that I didn't pay for. I wasn't hassled by staff and the gates didn't close.

The buses in Canberra went card-only (their own MyWay card) during the pandemic then just kept that policy when it ended. You can't top up the card using a credit card on the bus, that needs to be done at a bus interchange (or via app if your MyWay card is registered, mine isn't)

1. Bad journalism to accuse someone for something that had already been apologized for 2. I found the 711 article myself when I was looking up why the 711 near my place is building a Starbucks right next door. (Aparently someone said that the company that owns 711 also owns Starbucks, and are building Starbucks next to several 711s

Card only: I know the majority of people use card now, and have been for a long time, but isn't cash legal tender, and therefore must be accepted? Most of the self service-checkouts at Coles for example are card only, but they have at least one that allows for cash payments.
@daveg21048 ай бұрын
From the ACCC website - "Businesses can choose which payment types they accept. It is legal for a business to specify the terms and conditions that they will supply goods and services. This includes whether they will accept cash payment. Businesses should be clear about the types of payments they accept and the total price payable". It's up to consumers to read any terms and conditions carefully.

Any shop/merchant Is allowed to charge a surcharge if you use a card. Of course the big merchants don’t charge it, to be customer friendly with high volume turnover. Most shops/merchants don’t charge it because they’d upset customers, so we’re not used to it. The point is they can if they want, up to a certain %.

You have to stand out from the other applicants. Because there's a rental shortage many people will be applying for the same property.

Of course, if 35 people pay the almost-$30 to stand out, none of them stands out but the 100+ who can’t pay for it miss out. And the real estate agent makes a nice little $1,000+ profit doing what they should be doing anyway. I want to know whether people have to pay it on every application, do they get a comprehensive report usable everywhere, or can they present the PDF report the ad mentions to every R/E agent?

There aren't any places to rent, so it's absolutely cut-throat applying, anything you can do to get ahead might just maybe possibly perhaps get you somewhere to live...if you are really, really lucky. Most of us live in fear that we will lose our rental and end up homeless with our kids just because the landlord wanted to sell, or some other no-fault situation.

The rental history check is a real thing. Because if you have had a poor history in paying rent it becomes very costly to take legal action to evict the tenants. Also if your property is used for illegal activities it can be confiscated and sold. I believe the USA 🇺🇸 has a similar law.
