I've got family in Ecuador; I've seen some other volcanoes off-gassing during a recent tour, and I'm paying close attention to the one at the border of Colombia & Ecuador. A brother-in-law is a geophysical scientist there.

For our edification: an episode explaining / comparing phreatic, Strombolian, magmatic, (and others I didn't catch) eruptions would be helpful. I'll GOOGLE those terms but might not be able to cipher what they mean.

Great video! On the list of volcanoes under "minor unrest," you put the Campi Flegrei volcano down twice, but it's okay. In the next video, please make sure that you only put each volcano once. Have you done a video on a volcano called Mount Garibaldi in Canada? I noticed that there are volcanoes in Canada and I hope to see them in future videos. Isn't there a volcano on Baffin Island or on some other islands that are North of the mainland? These volcanoes are probably not studied much because of their location(s), but I would like to know more about them, if possible. Thank you for posting and for keeping everybody updated!

Iceland Fagradalsfjall intense seismic activity, alert level raised to Yellow
@b.a.erlebacher11392 жыл бұрын
@Lurking Carrier Different volcanic system. Fagradalsfjall was the small, "tourist" eruption last year, producing insignificant amounts of ash. Its only effect on air travel was bringing in huge mobs of tourists. The bad ones are the very large, old volcanoes further east. They've been showing some unrest, but I get the impression that they often do.

Sakurajima really deserves its classification as a “Decade Volcano”.

Looks like you raised the threshold of your "Significant Unrest" category because there are none or only one when there were many previously.
@adriennefloreen2 жыл бұрын
If Sakurajima is at alert level 5 for a normal eruption, what would the alert level be if the whole super volcano was about to erupt again? Because it seems like they need a level number for that. Or maybe at that point they would call it "Alert Level Oh ****!"
@jefferyindorf6992 жыл бұрын
To keep it light, that would be " ALERT LEVEL GODZILLA".

The Chiles-Cerro negro volcanic complex has a caldera in the south called Potrerillos and that is where more earthquakes are taking place and it is where the uplift is taking place Note: There are two calderas with the same name and well, it is not the 65 million years old Potrerillos caldera of the country Chile, it is the Potrerillos caldera of the Chiles Cerro Negro volcanic complex.
@psalmerperena41202 жыл бұрын
There's also another caldera just east of Potrerillos called Chalpatan. There's also a volcano named Horqueta. All of them are affected by this uplift and it may mean all of them are one volcanic group/complex. I don't want to scare people but the volcanic groups with viscous lava/magma undergoing this kind of activity have the potential to undergo a large explosive caldera event. Unknown to many even to some Ecuadorians themselves, Ecuador has large calderas as big and as powerful as that of Long Valley caldera in California, USA. Ecuador is no stranger to major caldera activity like most South American countries within the Andes region.

I'm sorry to say I disagree with descriptions used in the list of non-erupting volcanoes to watch out for. The "minor", "major", "significant" progression is counter-intuitive to an English-speaking non-vulcanologist. "Minor" for yellow, "moderate" for orange and "serious" for red would be clearer.
@Pollen1122 жыл бұрын
At what point does it go from "wow so many eruptions early in the year" to "oh wow something is causing increased volcanism"? Because I'm getting a bad vibe from the combination of solar activity spiking and the amount of seismic activity, especially since there's been some interesting papers talking about potential structures like the LLSVs being responsible for an electrodynamic couple between the Earth's Core and the Solar Wind. Genuinely asking because i work at a science museum and I'd like to be able to give a solid response when people ask. (Which the do)

They can weigh as much as a car and be thrown up to several kilometers. You can work out in your own head how much force that implies when they land. They can easily damage structures or kill people.
