I'm betting this was because one or a few of the devs were tired of the abysmal battery life on their Wii U game pads dying for not charging over night and being dead the next morning, so they said "Screw it, let me hack together another control scheme!" and this was born. I know I probably would have done so, because then it makes my work life a little easier.

Just a great example of cost savings. Though to be fair to Nintendo, analog triggers on portable devices can be kinda risky. People tend to carry them around randomly and drop them constantly and digital triggers can take that abuse better. Still sucks though. And Microsoft has no excuses. It's their fault that games don't use gyro more as their whole system doesn't support it at all.

I used to do this with my brother we used to play splatoon hide and seek and we would always fight for the game pad because it had the motion controls, then he decided to tell me one day that this trick existed, we tried it and now we can play like brothers with both motion controls and try to find each other In the different maps it was the best trick I ever herd

i always did this with a regular wii classic controller because my gamepad didn’t connect more than a few inches away from the console and i still wanted the experience of playing splatoon so i just connected two controllers and ran around 😭

i think I may have confused this with the gamepad/wiimote gun attachment in thr Wii U introduction trailer prior or maybe seen this before but forgot. Never used it this way. Its a cool idea to get around no motion in it because they knew hardcore weren't willing to and if they didn't want to make a new controller to bridge thr gap why not do this instead. Thry save money and you can use both and if got a Wiimote around why not use it. So like the Gamepad but wanted typical layout controller and you need more controls for Splatoon then the Wiimote/Nunchuck offer so fair on them for doing this. Ah the Wii era with hardcore gamers and classic controller praise but motion control stigma.

No motion controls was the only bummer of the WiiU pro Controller. Other than that, I love this thing. I think it feels awesome and it certainly looks a lot better than a Switch Pro Controller. Both sticks up never bothered me. Despite having sold my WiiU years ago, I kept one of those for PC gaming, a good decision. And another big advantage for tech nerds: The WiiU pro Controller has very simple internals. A single flat board and no unnecessary wires, easy to disassemble and nothing ever breaks. The Switch Pro Controller is a nightmare, it's tightly packed with several boards, which are connected by hard to reach flat cables and when I wanted to clean mine, the latch of one of those cables broke and there is no way of repairing that. That controller is completely over engineered, there is no reason, why it couldn't have been a flat board too. Would have made it a lot cheaper.

Love how they just absolutely gave up on the Wii U. They could have leaned heavily on the fact that it had all the virtual console games the Wii and 3DS had but they didn’t. They could have updated the Wii U to work without a game pad, sold one without one for a price reduction and advertised it as the official way to play classic games and Wii/Wii U games. What we’ve got now works but this was the last way to own a lot of these games permanently without having to be subscribed.

It was actually only $50. But no it didn't have motion controls. It was also built incredibly cheaply in general so just another example of Nintendo doing the bare minimum like the Wii's classic controller. Honestly was really surprised the Switch got such a good one. Very un-Nintendo like.
