I figured females would be attracted to the large tusks when they said they're fragile and try to protect their tusks. If a male has large tusks protruding from it's head, that means it's gone a long time without having them be broken by another male in a fight. This signals to females that is in some way superior to the other males. Smarter, faster, stronger, or whatever. Either way, it's a superior specimen and a more suitable mate. The best part is they simply can't cheat by evolving stronger tusks. If they did those tusks would be at a hire risk of cracking their skull rather than breaking, so they need to remain brittle. Amazing evolutionary strategy!

The mechanism of Evolution never requires that a mutation in an organism be beneficial. It only requires that a mutation be not so detrimental that it keeps an individual from that species from procreating. This could be the case here and the mutation just got passed along, became more prominent and then the females worked it into their sexual selection process further enlarging the effect. Remember kids: evolution doesn't always have to be good, only not so bad that it doesn't stop procreation.

If say for example ten generations of a species has to deal with a constant problem (Which would in this case be what is essentially a knife embedding itself into your skull) genetics will opt to try and deal with that issue better. It is why creatures have hair, to deal with the cold, it is why animals have claws or tusks. To hunt or climb better. They're just there to transmit information to tell the body how to develop,you seems to be under the impression that specific phenotypes come into existence to deal with a certain problem when in reality they're selected for randomly through mutations that may or may not be beneficial to the animal. Hair did not create itself because humans needed protection against the cold,it was selected for because the individuals who had it could survive better so they transmitted it to their offspring. TLDR evolution isn't a video game level up.
