@Hellcat71782 So I agree with you. I've made mistakes, certainly. Really, attention to detail is what I actually mean. While there are very good lube/maintenance/dealerships, a good number also lack attention to detail. It's against this backdrop that I made the statement. I never used to be a DIY guy, in fact, I would have never started DIY, if not for the frustrations I got from shops and dealerships. Including selling me supposed OEM, only for it to be the cheapest crap aftermarket. I got into DIY out of frustration, but it ended up turning out good. So I guess you see where I'm coming from.

Me too! I torque the drain plug to spec too and not the “mechanic’s feel”.

I just bought a 2019 Lexus RX350 from a Ford dealership. They did an oil change before I bought the car. I also had my mechanic do a PPI before I purchased the car. As someone who has done his own oil changes since I was 14 years old (now 58), I decided to change the oil myself. I also bought an OEM filter housing just in case it broke when I removed it. Sure enough - the middle canister tube was missing. I was pretty angry, but glad I had the wisdom to have a new Lexus filter housing ready.

Many shops setups are driven by meeting margins and attention to detail is sacrificed in the process.

Caveat! From the looks of things, you might want to get a brand new OEM canister replacement. The standing pipe isn’t a serviceable item and it shouldn’t be detachable the way you have it set up, once it’s detachable that way, you need a replacement. Car Care Nut did an extensive video concerning this. You might want to check it out. Cheers!

Thanks for suggesting. I'll look up the video. That plastic OEM cartridge has a tendency to crack. The center tube on this aftermarket housing is serviceable.

So after watching the Car Care Nut video on these filters, I've decided to get the OEM canister. Thanks for flagging!

Yes, changed my oil about a week ago. The cap was missing the center tube. The filter was mangled, potentially from the first time it was started by not having oil on the other side. It was a bosch so it had the full plastic ends so it shouldn't totally collapse. This isn't the first time it's happened. Last time it happened, I told myself I would only do the oil changes myself (so of course when I decided to change my mind, it happens again). I'm using the dorman aluminum cap with their center tube that doesn't fit very tight. I think you are right, it's staying in the filter and the tech doesn't realise it's still in the filter. Slap and go.

You just saved an engine right there!

Then you would get blamed for the engine failure, and/or you would have to go to each place that the vehicle got an oil change at and prove (however you plan on doing that) that they didn't f==k your $h¡+ up! This is why I - do my own car maintenance/repairs as much as possible. - prefer the spin on filters!

I got it locally, just one of those generic ones. It came with 3 slots on either side, and didn't fit initially until I bent of the prongs making it 2 slots per side. Lol

Never spray brake clean or any solvent inside the filter cartridge. Even a small amount is enough to change the chemistry of the oil. Just drain it upside down if you have to and wipe it off. It's just oil no harm done.
@DIYAutoworksNG3 ай бұрын
The solvent I used was fast drying, so no issues. But I agree with you, no need to do that except you have some sediments there. That was exactly my case. I could see that the leftover oil was heavy with filtered material so had no choice but to clean.

Asking for clarity.....isn't your "Warning" ( as true as it is) ....a bit overblown to suggest that the lack of this center-tube will cause "early catastrophic engine failure" ??..... let's review. The oil filter element, when installed, presses against some sort of spring action when the housing is fully tightened.....this assures both "ends" of the filter are tight against the housing. This avoids filter-element flow bypass. Then.....the internal tube that we're talking about... is only a tube length with holes along it's length...which "improves" the oil flow to *more evenly* hit all the pleats along its length. The absence of this tube does very little other than distributing the oil flow a bit better along the length of the filter....having this tube gone still allows oil to flow through the filter without short-circuiting the filter. I see this as a minor improvement in oil flow management, on the entering-side of the filter ( more even flow along the filter body length)...and nothing more. If your warning were true...especially saying lack of tube can collapse the filter element...ask yourself.....how did the filter survive all the (shown) previous oil changes without issue??

There's a video the car care nut has on a Highlander with this same oil filter housing. The engine had some very loud ticking noise and it ended up being that the filter collapsed and was leading to oil starvation. This was despite have the center tube. Just imagine if the tube wasn't there, the media could get sucked into the inlet side of the engine. If you notice, the oil filter that was there previously had solid plastic caps which adds to its integrity. It such good quality oil filter wasn't being used, the story may have been different.
@TheWilferch4 ай бұрын
@@DIYAutoworksNG ..well.....we've been using original Toyota filters all along...can't recall seeing the tube and never had a filter failure. I would say if you took out an old filter and found it still "in shape".....there was no danger and no damage done. Notice you are relating an issue where the filter failed AND the tube WAS STILL THERE.....there is no substitute for OEM filters.

Take an old 1 gallon plastic milk jug and after cleaning.... cut off the top half and use that. The "thread" is not a perfect fit to the car but will deform enough to create a tight fit during oil filling....afterwards, use the milk jug cap to prevent excessive oil spilling after removal. Your welcome.
