I´ll be honest, but making 1 out of 4 errors isn´t that bad, now is it? Thank you very much for the tips! Guess from now on I will try to keep my hands on the correct side of my face when I make those roundhouse kicks. :)

Fortunately, none, but I think I've seen some of these, especially the knees, with the newer guys at my gym. From day one at my gym, I had good partners who would help me correct my tells and gaps in my guard. My coaches also prioritize staying safe at all times when throwing.

Ah, jeez, I _hate_ it when people suggest that crossface guard when doing round kicks. I tried it a few times in padwork just to give it a chance, and on top of feeling awkward for the body mechanics, I find it also tends to obstruct my view. Had someone suggest to me a couple months ago, and I was just like, "Hey, if you think it works for you, that's great, but I've tried it and just do not mesh with it at all, so no, I'm not going to do it."

@@RepublicDave Weakening your kick out of fear will just make people counterpunch your kicks more freely. Better to use your kick-side arm (either keep it in high guard or post out), on top of distance management and/or preemptive head movement.

@@RepublicDaveThat's because they're throwing the kick from within punching range, I throw that right into a left hook alot (I cross block just incase it's going up and step in on the kick's timing, also depending on which side I cross block with, the jab/long left hook might come first) All they have to do is throw a teep instead of a round kick from that range then I get fucked up on my step in.

I don’t know if you’ll see this Gabriel but I had my first ever amateur kickboxing bout two days ago and I won by unanimous decision 😆 your videos have helped massively and wanted to express my gratitude for them. The main thing I noted from the fight is that the adrenaline saps away so much more of your energy than you can ever imagine and it seemed like all trained technique flew out the window, it was a great fight and it’s very very fun, I didn’t enjoy waiting around for 7 hours for my fight to start but it was worth it when my hand got raised

For knees, you can extend one hand to catch them (reaching across your body). With the other hand, Petchboonchu likes to keep on the same side but high, ready to defend a strike. Dieselnoi likes to do a vampire guard with the other hand. When I asked them why they prefer these two approaches, it seems to come down to body type (height and such) and their basic style (how other techniques compliment them). But the point this is sort of half way between the two methods you showed. And kru Benz and Dieselnoi are pretty good reference points.
@skyhookschool
@skyhookschool 8 ай бұрын
I’ve noticed the difference in guarding hand (not reaching hand) position as well with different Kru in Thailand. I think it’s largely a matter of preference of course, but an interesting pattern I’ve noticed is that the older generation Kru generally go with that “vampire” guard, where the younger generation Kru like the hand up covering the jaw/temple like usual. When I asked each of them why they preferred their style, the older Kru were all concerned with the opponent throwing an up-elbow as a counter to the knee (arm across the face is good to stop this)…the younger Kru were all concerned with the opponent timing a hook/overhand as a counter. We’ve seen Harrison time the left hook against a left knee a bunch of times. I’m guessing the older generation dealt with more elbows (on average) and the younger generation has had to deal with more boxing-heavy opponents. Just a theory though
@briane9238
@briane9238 8 ай бұрын
@@skyhookschool Cool. Yeah Dieselnoi is older gen and Petch is younger so it can be change of Muay Thai approaches in general. But either way, both hands play important roles for knees. Of course, that can be said for anything, but it seems many people are less familiar with the roles of the hands for knees than for other types of strikes.

I urge everyone to go watch the recent Uku Jurjendahl vs Badr Hari fight in Glory 89 to see why the thai style of swinging the kicking side hand down when roundhouse kicking is not a smart habit. Gabriel should have included that too in this video.

3:20 I've trained MT for 7 years and our long knees are taught to be thrusted like spear forward, not up, so I'm bit puzzled by this form, I'm aware your credentials are *very* legit, that's why I'm confused about that. Also 4:10 I do have my hands on my cheek when I do a roundhouse but it doesn't mean a cross or a upward frontkick cant connect if timed correctly, so both forms have weaknesses, no? Thanks for the feedback in advance.

Ya I also wonder this about kickboxers, the knee up technique. I am no expert but my intuition is that on average one tends to generate more power thrusting forward with the hips, engaging your core. But once again, I am not a pro so I am also just curious.

When I kick I lean back with my head (to counterbalance), creating more space. So I'm out of range for punches. Who is kicking while staying upright with his upper body? Also legs are longer than arms typically😅
@unknownentity8256
@unknownentity8256 8 ай бұрын
@@whoknows8223 Lean back? I've heard leaning off center a bit to the sides, leaning back means you lose a lot of power to your kick. To respond the last thought of yours, as I said, with timing, you can get countered with a cross, plenty of examples of this happening in professional fights.

@@unknownentity8256 I mean leaning just like this: kzbin.inforOL1cvtDsuI?si=GROGHTiclrFzWpv4 I'm not a native speaker so maybe describe it poorly Edit: see where his head goes? In Wing Chun as in some Muay Boran I ve seen, we have an unknown exercise thats called Cheung Kiu Sao. Long bridge Chi Sao. Long bridge sticky hands. In sticky hands you ve won if you have possibilities for combination or volume, the center line occupied. In Cheoung Sao the idea is to hit first. In any case its the method and honesty of the practice that makes it efficient. Thanks for the content!!

That because the MMA gloves provide such little protection. Boxing gloves provide a cushion effect. If you're block a round kick with only 1 hand in MMA gloves I'd advice bringing the palm of hand up to temple level

Also, I can’t count how many times I would have been killed dipping to the body if it wasn’t for that fight Where DC got killed by John Jones with a head kick I know the context behind that KO is a little different than what we’re talking about here, but I do a lot of the same techniques as DC, when closing the distance against kicks
