Very helpful Serge, I picked up the Deity VO-7U mic & arm . . . it's definitely better than my small hypemic. Love that it's USB-C too. It does seem to not have much boost on the audio gain. I'm about 3 tick marks from all the way up on the mic dial. Your procedure nails the audio level though. I don't have a voice isolator button but a "noise removal" slider since I'm on Catalina, I think that's the same. Wonder if I can make a plug in to set those settings automatically to save time as I have a lot of individual VO clips. Maybe slap on a pop filter too. Thanks again, much better audio with your method.

great tutorial! however it is not the dynamic microphone itself that picks less noise and rejects echo, it does not do magic, is just the fact that it is less sensitive and you need it to be close to the audio source; so automatically your voice will be louder than our sounds. If you get a condenser mic and lowered the sensitivity and placed it close, you will have low noise and less echo, it is all based on the signal to noise ratio. I edit podcasts and I have have lots of Shure sm7bs mics with ton of noise. The advantage of a dynamic mic is that they have build in pop filter to help with plosives and that they handle loud sounds without distorting. Also I would suggest to have a compressor before the limiter to it wouldn't be harsh keeping the volume down. Keep up the good work!

This was a big help. I am using the rode wireless go to record straight onto FCP using voice recording. The reduction only goes to 0.6 when I place the gain to max. Do you know if this means I am doing something wrong? Thanks

FCP will usually render synched clips faster than Multicam (at least in my experience)

Why don't you record audio from the mic directly in the camera

Depending on your mic/camera combination, that might be an option. But a lot of cameras are just not optimized for audio recording. You’ll usually get better audio by recording to something other than your camera.
