My Fuyu is about 18 years old and we get hundreds of fruits off of it. For years we struggled with what to do with so much fruit. Now we dehydrate a lot of it. Persimmons are wonderful when dehydrated and they are useful not only in a snack but chopped up in salad, oatmeal and cereal. I use a food slicer to cut them into equally thick sections, just a tad thinner than one would slice a tomato for a burger. The cut the stem part out of the last section on top. After about two days on the dehydrator they are ready. I just found some in an airtight jar in the back of the pantry from 18 months ago. I've started drying my figs as well. I cut them in half for better results, and they fit in the dehydrator trays better also. I tried drying citrus. Blah! Most aren't good. You might want to do a few for a colorful potpourri, or maybe some lemons for hot tea. But that's it IMO.

Definitely add them. Now is the perfect time to plant them, but you're running out of time for spring fruit tree planting. Persimmons fruit quickly, so the faster you can get them in, the better.

So helpful! We pruned our persimmon trees like this. They were planted last year and are the size of your Jiro persimmon, would you recommend picking off fruits that set this year so they can focus on branches the way you would a peach or a plum?

In Africa they started a process where they keep mango trees low to the ground. It auds in higher yields and allows for less use of fungicides and insect infestations. Large trees wasted a lot of fruit and harder to maintain. With 30 percent of fruit ending up rotten, mis-ripened orcon the ground.

Is it cutting the tips (cutting the apically dominant parts off) that makes the side branching--as is the case with Blackberries, etc?
@IThinkICare

So my question has to do with the lower branches. Most of the growth and flower coming from above but what is going to happen on the branches lower left at 0:40 ? They were not cut yet nothing on them. Full leaves on the others so assume it wasn't just late on budding. thanks

Hey! Love the channel a lot. I recent purchased a Matsumoto persimmon . I have very tight spacing but still want to grow this variety. Issue is that it can get to 20ft. If I prune the central leader to 3ft( it's currently 6ft. Will this control the height so I can at least pick fruit at 10ft? Thank you
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 7 ай бұрын
Any tree can be controlled to any height you wish by annual pruning. I have an avocado tree in ground, which can grow 15-20 feet, but I maintain it at 6-8 feet year round. Any Asian persimmon can be kept at the 8-10ft size through annual pruning. I have a video on pruning persimmon trees here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmLbeIKih9SaerMsi=idAtJb7qUXa1e-SF

Is this specific to persimmon trees? I've heard that fruit trees can be pruned aggressively during winter months to maximize production and deter tall tree heights. I'm not sure if that requires dwarf varieties to start. Do you have any videos about this you can point me too, please, on this or your other channel? TIA! Grateful for your content!
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
It depends on the tree. Trees that fruit on the new year's growth can be pruned aggressively, so persimmons and figs, for example, can really be cut back. Fruits that fruit on previous year's growth or on fruit spurs, like blackberries, raspberries and apples, for example, can't be cut back too hard or you can remove the fruit wood. Each tree needs to be researched individually.

I learned so much from your videos. Unfortunately I was late to prune my 2.5 year old persimmon and now it’s getting very tall. Can I dead head cut in the fall to keep him short ? Thank you
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 10 ай бұрын
Once dormant, yes. Don't cut the tree when it's actively growing, because it could cause a lot of stress. I would wait until the tree is completely defoliated and bare of fruit to begin that. Please be aware that it may set the tree back quite a bit the following year, but in the long run, it may be worth it.

What will you recommend to fertilize a persimmon tree, that drop the flower or small fruit
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 5 ай бұрын
Fruit drop can be caused by many different things. Over-fertilizing can cause fruit drop. So can drought stress, and young trees also can drop fruits. Some varieties of persimmons also alternate-bear when young, so every other season they'll drop most of their crop. You can't do anything about that except wait for the trees to become mature. All you can do is make sure your trees are adequately fed (but not overfed), mulch them well, make sure they're irrigated and just wait for them to grow up. All fruit trees self-thin to a degree, so some fruit drop is normal.

Can it grow in snowing state? Can i grow in the 22" deep garden box?

They grow down to zone 7b if I recall correctly. It occasionally snows in southeast nc. And up in Raleigh it snows quite a bit, and they produce loads. They were 7b from last time I recall and they’re colder than us down here on the coast. If not American persimmon are good, but it’s a struggle getting both male and female trees, as they’re not self fertile like the fuyu Asian persimmon

Ever thought of growing guavas? If you can grow avocado, you can grow guava.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
It's much too cold here for guavas. Mexican avocados can survive into the teens, so that's why I can grow a Mexican avocado tree. Guava's are much less hardy, and it would be far too much work for me to protect something I'm not crazy about. If it can't survive 20 degrees unprotected, I can't grow it here.

What if you live in a 12zone hawaii that doesn’t have winters like the mainland does. Can you still prune your persimmon tree in winter.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 7 ай бұрын
In a tropical location, you will prune your persimmon immediately after harvest. That gives the tree maximum time to recover and leaf back out before flowering time. I'm not sure how well a persimmon will grow in Hawaii, since persimmons have a low requirement for chill. I'd be interested to hear if they fruit there.

Why does my persimmon tree's leave start to curl?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 10 ай бұрын
It could be for a whole host of reasons. They could be over-watered, they could be under-watered, it could be a natural reaction because your sun is too strong and they're curling their leaves to reduce surface area and shade themselves, it could be because insects are living inside the curls, it could be a fungal disease, etc. You'd have to inspect things more closely.
