Recognizing ear fatigue and wearing earplugs to shows is a must. At shows, you can still FEEL the music in your body even if you're hearing it more quietly, and personally it's allowed me to enjoy shows all the way through without starting to dread hearing even more loud music. Nice earplugs won't muffle the sound much.

Yeah I use to drum without ear plugs and go to shows without them. Now I have to use them for both. The golden spiral fits the ear and cochlea perfectly lol. Take care of them.

Well done, really well done. I'm an old soundboy (30+ years) who lurks on your channel for the hilarity and hearing loss is real and it can't be fixed. I walk around basically yelling at everyone because I think it's the normal volume.

after suffering a stroke and, subsequently, sensorineural hearing loss in my right ear, i thought i was finished. i have recovered from the stroke, but still ,at the moment, have the hearing loss (hearing aid is going to be fitted in a month). i'd say my music career is far from finished. after training myself and hearing to adapt i've been engineering and mixing as usual with no complaints from my clients. perhaps when my bionic ear comes, it will even be that much better. again. i am lucky to only have the loss in one ear, and my case may certainly be different than others, but anyone out there telling a person suffering hearing loss that they can't play music is horsesh*t.

My mom is one of the country's leading experts on helping musicians deal with hearing loss. She actually worked with Andrew Huang a bit when his issues cropped up. So obviously because of that I refused to wear hearing protection while playing gigs because teenage rebellion etc. It's worth noting that you lose your bass frequency sensitivity first. So now even though I can hear conversations fine, I have trouble mixing sub-bass tones without using a visual aid. It's frustrating and I can't imagine how much tougher it would be if I kept being a stubborn idiot into my late 20's.

I own a sports car, have guns, have had TMJ of varying degrees in the past, worked in a warehouse for six years with a buzzer at about what I'd guess to be 120 dB right above my area, multiple ear infections, and also use a combination of headphones and IEMs depending on various situations. I do try and be careful with the volume setting, but there's no predicting when a youtube will blast the shit out of your ears because it's """funny""" What I'm saying is that I can't wait until I'm fuckin' dead so I don't have to hear this goddamned ringing in my ears anymore. 👍 still gonna make music though, just cut me some slack if it sounds like garbage above 10kHz because i don't hear much above that

really good advice. i have tinnitus and tend to have glitchy hearing at higher volumes due abusing my ears too much and not wearing protection. thankfully it doesn't seem to get worse since i started to take more care. the earlier the better. it can be really depressing when you want to make some music and you are constantly pestered by a hum in one ear. i also experienced several acute hearing losses at shows or clubs and that shit is just super scary.

I'm really glad you made this video. A lot of people don't know you can damage your hearing with one single sound in one moment if it's loud enough no matter how short the sound is. The problem is: You will know years later. Tinnitus is no joke. Be careful everybody.

Pro tip for DJs, when you first step in the DJ booth, turn the booth monitor volume all the way off, then slowly bring it up. If you get in DJ booth and dj before you has the volume absolutely cranked, you are starting your set at that volume and fatigue and damage will set in faster.

I now have what they initially diagnosed as "autophony" because of a mistake in oral surgery. I stopped doing live sound because of it, which i had done for close to 10 years. I always protected My ears but it has made things difficult. Basically left eardrum got moved and things are extra loud now. It mostly sounds like I have a finger in one ear, but some low frequencies are over exaggerated. Mixing sucks now, but I'm still trying to adapt. It's only been a few years and surgery could 50/50 take my hearing away. Good on you for reminding people to wear fucking earplugs when it makes sense.

This is so important. I have the hearing of like a 40 year old (I'm 23) because I was in bands in middle and highschool, and never protected my ears rehearsing with live drums. I really feel like we're gonna have a whole generation with massive hearing loss in old age, sadly. Simply because earbuds became such a popular way to listen to music on the go. I always hated listening through earbuds. But, I feel like I've been on the bus so many times, next to some one, and I can hear enough bleed from their earbuds that I can guess the song they're listening to. That has happened so many times, often with people my age (millenial). A pretty big bummer, honestly.

percussion and drum sounds damage the ears the fastest, turn down the master or submix bus if you are doing a lot of drum stuff in the DAW. I also mute the sound of midi notes being dragged around on the piano roll or when clicked in , there is no sound unless played back or if I record it in on my midi keyboard. Less sound the better, I don't need to hear how horrible I sound right LOL, jk i just don't like that sound when you drag midi notes around. Extra noise to tire the ears .

I DJ'd for 15 years... literally never had hearing loss even though some friends would complain about it. lol,, i used to go in the subwoofers hehe .. but I will say that a pistol/gloc really f'd me up for a day, not only was I dizzy after one clip, my hearing was shot for a day, but it came back. I think the biggest hurdle for people in audio is not physically hearing, but comprehension. it took years for me to be able to comprehend all the sounds in a mix. U learn with experience... yeah, oddly enough pistols are really loud compared to a shotty. 12ga does almost nothing to ur hearing in comparison. man i miss skeet
