having tanks has helped me tremendously with my addiction and PTSD from an abusive relationship. Before I had a stable housing situation I would just binge you guys' videos to prepare for my first tank once I got stable, tbf I still binge yalls videos. I have 5 tanks now and no longer want to spend my money on booze just fish stuff and my ex wouldn't let me have tanks so I never want to go back (among other reasons lol). The fish also lower my blood pressure so much I go and work on my tanks when I'm having an episode. I'm so glad yall are starting up a program to help others with similar issues learn the benefits of fish keeping

I had started getting into aquariums before you guys started this series, but it definitely does help with mental health. I was tired, and bored, and needed something to do in my free time. I started with a 5 gallon and a betta, then got him a 10 gallon and some cory cats. Then I helped my mom set up a 20 gallon in our living room. And soon I'm going to be getting myself a 30 gallon low boy tank, and I'm so excited to it.

Just as not even a counter perspective, but another one, I got into fishkeeping because of grief and I needed something. While I do enjoy it, now, it was not something that initially helped me out that much. In fact, it became a source of anxiety. I'd just dealt with a loss and the idea of fish I'm supposed to be caring for also croaking actually set me off. Now it's like "Oh that blows, oh well, I need to do better somewhere" but back then? Whoof, it was really demoralizing and depressing. There does eventually come a point where it's very beneficial, but for some? Early on might not be it.

I live in North Carolina too. On the coast and one thing we don't have is a fish rescue. I would love to do that with someone. I'm a full time contractor tho and don't have a lot of time. I have 13 tanks and so what I can to help people out but a rescue could be a really good thing for north Carolina.

I have a fishkeeping friend that recently had a bad fire "house a loss" and he lost all of his fish! He had huge tanks too! 150, 240 and 750 gallons and maybe som small ones, not sure. Anyway, I don't know if he would be into participating in your new content project but I could ask. In California btw. I am not a cat lover but I don't think you guys over do it. It's ok. Also, I recently received a very nice Anubias from you that did fine until I removed it from the pot "one week later" and glued it to a rock. It then melted! Hope it comes back! I've got a problem that I can't figure out: water in my 40 gallon tank is turning an evil dark brown. I have a variety of other tanks from 2.5 to 20 gallons besides, and none of those are having this problem, so it's clearly not a problem with the water itself. That 40g is my mystery snail breeding tank, but there's also a ton of ramshorns in there, unfortunately (which my local fish store will take at the thousand-a-week rate I can pick them out, that's how extreme their numbers are! Mostly to feed puffers or assassin snails or what not, but occasionally a customer comes in specifically looking for ramhorns). The tank ran just fine for about 2.5 years without any problems at all. Then there was an ammonia spike that I could not determine the cause of, nor figure out any way to bring down outside of a 100% water change which I really didn't want to do if I could at all avoid it. Even a 20 or 30% water change made no dent in the ammonia levels at all - on the API test kits, it was stuck at around a 4. After about a week of fretting over this and finally moving out all my mystery snails (of which quite a few didn't survive being moved around...), I got an airstone for the tank. I had two hang-on-the-back filters in the tank previously, operating in opposite corners, but no airstone. Well, the airstone cleared up the ammonia spike right quick - within about two days the tank had completely cycled the ammonia out. Ok great, so I wait a few more days to make sure it's going to be ok. Well, the ammonia stayed at zero, but the water turned a filthy brown, so dark as to be opaque. Even looking down from the top (so that I'm not looking through the glass, just to make sure it wasn't anything on the walls of the tank), I couldn't see the bottom, it was too dark. Wait a few more days, and no improvement. Wait about a week, no improvement. Mind you, no mystery snails in the tank, although still a lot of ramshorns, and with no mystery snails in the tank I'm not putting food in the tank, so its not an overfeeding problem. Gravel vac every last inch of the substrate, and still nothing, water still the nasty opaque brown. Eventually I decided to drain the entire tank after all, washed every decoration, bought all new plants, cleaned the filters thoroughly, etc. etc. etc. Refill, let it run for a few days, and it looks like new. Move all the snails back in. Lose a few more along the way :( But they start mating again the very same day I put them back in, so those that survived the whole thing seemed pretty happy. I was very careful about the amount of food I put into the tank, and for about two weeks it was great, but now it's starting to turn dark brown again. Not quite yet to the level of opaque brown, but it will be soon. It is the only tank that is having this problem, the other 7 are all crystal clear water (and far less bioload, but again, this 40g ran for 2+ years as a breeding tank without any problems), and I have no idea what has gone wrong with this tank. I don't want to have to drain and refill once a month, that's not going to work for me, I desperately need to figure out what is causing this and what to do about it.

Many people are surprised by the weight of a fully planted and stocked 20 gallon, tell them what a 125 gallon weighs. Then tell them what their house floors were intended to hold.

Yeah, I'm struggling with algae but it's not stressing me out badly. I set up a 90 gallon tank about 4 months ago and I'm still figuring out the lighting intensity to use. I have the hair algae type but I'm going to get a Siamese Algae Eater in the next couple of months. Why so long? Quarantine I do first. It's kind of a hassle to clean the tank but in the long run it's worth it. Keep an eye on water parameters, too! Enjoy!

My mom's new, I'm reasonably experienced. She kept having milky water, like whiteish water. I said you're overfeeding. She said no way. I said cut your feeding in half for a week and see what happened, a week later it's clear as could be. She went through multiple filters before asking why and it was simply an overfeeding issue. We all start there.

Well. I just got an aquarium several weeks ago. New fish keeper here.... After learning about the nitrogen cycle... I started testing as recommended.
