The Brussels race organizers started this whole fiasco by offering Sydney 2 wildcard slots when they shouldn't have. They apparently don't know their own rules. And the Diamond League has given exceptions to other runners in the past, so why would Sydney or her coaches not think that everything is legit when she accepted their wildcard offers. Now, the Brussels race organizers know they screwed up, and are trying to make it up to Sydney by arranging separate 400m and 200m "promotional" races that aren't part of the DL tournament. This is all fine and good, but Sydney will probably have to run against "lesser" competition.
@tmedocianis

It's the other racers that complained about the rules not being followed and I agree with them. If I was a runner and somebody didn't race all season and got to run I'd boycott and ask every other runner to boycott also. Let that runner run by themselves and see how much the crowd likes that. The rules are simple. Run "1" event all season. She ran "0". Oh well. Next time her and her coach should run "1 single" event to make sure that they qualify by the rules.

Couldn't agree more... the only thing I would add is that the organizers of the Brussels meet are not the Diamond League leadership. So, essentially, this is just a pissing contest between petty bureaucrats who'd rather win their turf war than give the fans what they want, which is to see the best athletes compete at the highest level.

@@robws007What you are saying is: An athlete who didn't compete at the Olympic trials should get to start because the fans want to see her. Another athlete, who did run and qualified, is then asked not to run, since there are only a limited amount of tracks available! Edit: You are correct that in this discussion the error ( incompetence) lies with the Brussels Organization, not with the athletes, the rules or the overall Diamonf League Organization.
@robws007

@@alexandergutfeldt1144 no, that's not what I'm saying... don't misconstrue my POV to suit your narrative. The Olympics and World Championships are a completely different competition where athletes go through trials to represent their country, there are standards, heats, semis, etc. You are trying to compare apples and oranges! We can agree that the miscommunication was between the Brussels organizers and the Diamond League leadership, but I don't absolve the latter of some responsibility. The folks on the "the rules are the rules" side are short-sighted IMHO. The Diamond League is a completely commercial venture (so are the Olympics and World Championships, but member nations contribute and their contributions come from tax revenues) and as much as they are been sticklers for rules in this situation, they allowed Athing Mu to compete at the Prefontaine Classic last year under almost identical circumstances. So, different rules for different athletes (or shoe companies).

The DL allowed Athing Mu to compete in the Diamond League finals last year yet she had not run any DL events. The event organizer offered her a "national wildcard" spot and the DL OK'ed it. I certainly agree that she could have run a qualifying race. However, they did extend the invitation and then rescind it. Which looks bad in general. She has the luxury of competing on a different schedule because of how great she is. Therefore she perhaps should receive special treatment. If Bolt asked into a 400 at the height of his career, organizers would have done anything possible to make it happen. She is not a factor in the 200m at all....and she would still get smoked in the 400m although she could improve a lot if she competed more but her crazy coach won't allow that. Until then, she will most likely dominate 400m hurdles only.

Sorry, nobody is above rules. It’s Diamond League final, that is for Diamond League competitors. At least she could have done one. If I was in Brussels, she would not receive my ovation, that’s granted.

McLaughlin-Levrone, advised and abetted by Bobby Kersee and Michael Johnson’s spent the entire run up to the Olympics dodging her competition and withholding herself from the fans. I wonder how her competitors, who spend weeks together on the circuit, competing in every Diamond League meet, feel about her helicoptering in whenever she feels like. “It’s all about meeeee, Sidneeee…..

Faith Kipyegon is the greatest female track athlete that ever lived, yeah and she attends almost all diamond league meetings.. triple world champion in 1500m, triple Olympic champion in 1500m and 1 time 5000m Olympic champion, and has broken the world record for 1500m twice in 2 years. The record was previously held by the great Genzebe Dibaba. She broke the 5000m female record on her debut, previously held by Hassan, and competed against Hassan in the race. Has failed to win only two races in the last two seasons having attended almost all diamond league meetings. And will we mention all the silvers in World championships and the Olympics.. Someone tell me what can beat this record, someone write it down

Rules are rules. They shouldn't be bent for athletes who can't be bothered turning up. It isn't good for the sport when the top athletes don't compete. Travelling and competing all season is tiring and others are putting themselves out there. Sydney only had to compete in one event to qualify for the finals.

It’s giving arrogance. To run in the finals you must run in the circuit. You can’t just pull up and think they will bend the rules for you. Bolt was GREAT and he never thought the rules didn’t apply to him. He ran the circuit.

You can't become DL champion if you didn't run in any DL events during the season. It's not complicated and easily remedied for next year in which I'm sure Sydney will still be just as dominate. Coach Rob is wrong with his "rules be damned" approach here and trashing the DL itself is a separate conversation altogether. The DL (or any league for that matter) can't exist if athlete appearances were optional only have them all of them show up at the final for a payday or reputation refresh.

Could you imagine having a football team not play in the league then say “ We want to play in the Super Bowl”? It’s the “Diamond League” we all know she is good. She has to support the league just like the rest of the athletes. Other wise there is no league. If she brings advertising to the league maybe they can pay more money. Not just the Super Bowl.

OMG could we ease up on the hyperbole and over-dramatics. "ruin the sport" Get a grip. Yes, let's change the rules for the princess who never bothers to show up on the Diamond League. No one runner is bigger than the sport and certainly not one who rarely bothers to show up to races.

100% agree, she's the back to back Olympic champion and the biggest name in the sport, as gracious as she is. Not to say that rules don't apply to her, but they barred her from running in Zurich which would've given her the technicality green light to run in the diamond finale.

Coach why does she refuses to compete in the league though? She could have. She chooses just to compte in the USA so let her stick to those finals. I can understand what you are saying but dont you think the fans would have loved to see her on the league? Its not only about money, its about the love of the sport and for the fans. Periodt ‼️ Just like bolt because of his injury concerns he never competed much on the league but he showed up because he competed for the fans. Its not all about money so stop it. You saying that the diamond league cant pay her enough makes her and her team sound very proud and very vain.

Everyone in the commentts. Don't blame Sydney for the decisions of her coach! Yes rules are rules but the athletes deserve more incentive. Sydney doesn't tell Bobby what to do, he tells her. Same reason why we hardly ever see Athing racing.

Without rules/policy's either in professional sports or in our day to day life, where would that lead us? Here's a completely different perspective; If Sydney McLaughlin Laverne were able to compete in this up coming diamond League finals, watch dogs ever running not one single diamond event in 2024. That would mean that rules are being broken. And if rules can be broken for one, then those same rules that are being broken should in fact apply to all Regardless of how fast she has ran in 2024. Thoughts?
@SCATrackandField
@SCATrackandField 20 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate your perspective. It all makes sense if we view the Diamond League like the NBA. But it currently looks more like boxing and the UFC. It's ability to promote is all about the matchups. BBC has a media rights deal that is "ok" for the diamond league, but not as lucrative as it certainly could be. And diamond league marketing is so bad in the US that NBC surrendered the rights, and Flotrack is taking over, putting live coverage behind a $30 paywall. People like watching track. The olympics are proof of that. But they will watch when they are most entertained in the current model. The rule may be fair, but complicates the businesses interest to make money. And pro sports is about making money above all else. Which is exactly why rules get changed in pro leagues all the time. To find ways to make more money.
