I’m 67 yrs old. Started welding in 1977. Watching the old timers listening to the old timers. Then on lunch break trying to imitate what I saw. Listen to 7018 sounds like egg frying. Listen to MIG should sound like mad bumble bee. Cutting torch should not sound like a jet flying by should have a whisper sound when trigger is mashed! Going to the “OJT” school and graduating from the “school of hard knocks”. Welding by the seat of my pants,,,,,,,,sight,,,,,,feel,,,,,,sound. Keep eye glued on the puddle and not the slag. Tricks of the trade No wrote in books either! Thanks to all the old timers who took time to share their knowledge with me!

I'll never forget when I welded for my grandfather. He was a steamfitter on nuclear plants. My first attempt at a pasture gate fabricobbled of 1" pipe, at age 14... "Crooked as a dog's hind leg!" Porta-band cut it straight. My experience was 8th grade shop, I ran a 6" bead on a 1/4" plate. Next, Grandpa's AC tombstone box for pipe welding. No endearing stories of fishing at a pond, swingsets, and picnic sandwiches. Instead, in a crawl-space, he bounced a 1" black-pipe nipple off my ribs, "It looks like this!" I quickly found the gas pipe we tapped. If you need someone to thread pipe, let me know. I really miss him. Thankfully, his steamfitter union helped transition me from railcar mechanic, tool and diemaker into dentistry. Keep up the great videos.

Lol gotta love them Ol timers… 🤣 seriously, my Grandpa was similar… my favorite part was, he bounced the 1” black pipe nipple off your ribs 🤣 they were rough around the edges (not necessarily good at making us feel good about ourselves in the moment) but I’m pretty sure they meant well. They just didn’t know the best way to communicate it. Anyway… thank you for sharing. I sure appreciate it.

Another trick to use is to use a RED BRICK and just scrape the end of your rods off then put them in the bucket to use. Keep the brick in the bucket. I did this and Rod Starting was So much easier! You don't have to knock through the end coating to start welding. I now use MIG so don't do that so much anymore. Try it - you'll like it!

I don’t know if you ever talk about this but protecting the concrete pad from welding debris and making burn marks. I don’t know if they really care if your making brown burn marks or not. But their might be a time where somebody will even though through their use it will Get ugly. We used to lay down plywood and wet it if needed to protect the concrete. Or burn blankets also.

Austin, I am really surprised that you don’t have a feeder to run some .045 fluxcore, there’s just so many welds that can be done with flux core, and the reason for, would be that every box of stick rod, that you open you lose a third of that box of rod, whether it be stubs, that get thrown away, or the flux that gets chipped off, with the fluxcore there is no loss, I’m not saying that you need to weld every weld with flux core wire, I am saying that you could save yourself a lot of money or maybe I should say you could make a lot of money by having a feeder, whether it’s Lincoln or Miller it doesn’t really matter, like you I stick weld from time to time sometimes it’s just easier when you got small amount of welding, but I keep four different feeders, one is flux core only, and it has a flux core only gun, one is voltage sensing , I don’t carry all four of them with me all the time, but I do always carry at least one, working for yourself is all about making money, but it’s also about saving ourselves money and the most important thing is time, you can never stick weld as fast as you can run wire, anyway keep up the good work.👍

When he whips out the 8010 or 7018 It is probably from a past pipeline job . I used to save all opened boxes of rod from jobs or asked the whare house guys for the open returned boxes at the end of jobs because they would just throw out open boxes. Good for structural projects . Done quite a few without having to buy rod

I agree 20 yrs back bought a miller 301g trailblazer with a 12VS, but a first did not use because it came set up for big wire. Then later got a different gun for it to run .035 and .045 wire. Also later got a lincoln ln25, hobart hefty and a few months back a thermal arc hefty. Was using lincoln nr211 wire and now switched to hobart 21b wire For general fab projects they work great. The 12VS came with the Ironmate gun, but finally figured out you can change the liner and all the guns converted them to bernard centerfire consumables. Bernard also makes a Flux core welding tip/nozzle for center fire consumables.

I'm not a Pro Welder so really I don't know squat. But I use MIG for most of my welding, typically as of late just Flux, and 2 spool guns. The old Lincoln tombstone that my father had since I was a toddler sets under the bench. I started with the MIG after having two hobby ARC machines burn up before I could build a trailer frame. Sadly I'm about the worst Welder of my family.... 2 uncles, grandfather, father and my sister was a pipeline Welder and exotic metals.

Great video, I have a silly question. Have you ever seen or heard about someone chopping a Lincoln ranger? I'm interested in doing so to be a better fit on my shop on wheels. I have a service truck with a materials/ ladder rack. Also my cargo area has a sliding cover that I need to keep. Anyways just wondering if you've seen such a thing and could direct me to someone that would give me an honest opinion on how well the chop went and operates. I could always mount one on a trailer but I would rather have that option for towing larger materials that doesn't fit in the truck and hauling equipment on a large trailer. Keep the videos coming, no matter how simple the job we want to see them.

Would you say that a 6011 rod could be used in the same applications as 6010, or is there something unique about 6010 that causes welders to pick it over a 6011 rod? I'm an amateur/hobby welder, fyi. Thanks for all the informative videos.

I mentioned on another comment that anyone who cares enough can just monkey climb those square poles (or use magnets), or pick/cut the lock, or or or... If it's a liability thing that makes sense - if you have a pool with no fence and someone trespasses and drowns in your pool, you're on the hook for damages because its... I forget the legal term but basically your hazard is enticing. Probably the same here where if some foolish kid climbed the open ladder and fell off and died, the owner might be responsible. Which I would agree is patently ridiculous but that's USA for ya!

Time and materials is best but if you have to quote a job, I’ll typically do materials at cost multiplied by 5 to 10 depending on how labor intensive the job is, who the customer is, or how bad I need the work. Basic handrails would be a 10 multiplier if I have to install and paint because material costs are typically low, they’re labor intensive and, most of all, I hate handrails!
