I run my business out of my home studio! I mix around 100 - 150 projects a year and have done so for several years. Right out of our spare bedroom. Now I did start by working in bigger studios but that is beside the point. I completely agree. I had a hard time with his video when I saw it. There is nothing wrong with wanting companies to produce higher-quality tools and holding them to a standard. If we don't do that then how can we ever expect the tools we use for our craft to ever get better? I like Dom but I highly disagree with many of the points he made. Auto gain allows me to work faster and more efficiently. I work very hard to keep aliasing out of my mixes so oversampling is very much so important to me. The problem IS that devs keep releasing crappy broken plugins. The problem ISN'T that we expect more lol. Thanks for the great vid Weaver!

Thank you for your input. At the end of the day people would do well to remember that what is being reviewed is a tool. Plug-ins and audio equipment are tools, and to lose sight of this would be to betray your audience of fellow artists, and even the very concept of reviewing/critiquing as a whole. Actually, I have a question that's been bothering me for a while, and this might be my best shot so far at learning from the wisdom of someone with far more experience: Would you recommend iZotope RX Standard (or higher) for audio cleanup/repair business work? Could I manage such an operation with just RX Standard, Audacity, and maybe Ableton Live if more plug-ins are to be used? (I have iZotope's Tonal Balance Bundle which includes Ozone 9 Advanced, Neutron 3 Advanced, and Nectar 3 Plus, and I plan to upgrade to their Music Production Bundle which includes newer versions of Ozone and Neutron as well as RX 10 Standard). And to be specific, I'm looking to get into general audio cleanup whether it be for field recordings, interviews, lo-fi instrument/musical recordings, concert recordings, or film scenes. Removing background noise, reducing harsh frequencies, boosting some elements while reducing other unwanted sounds, things like that; whatever someone would be willing to pay me to do so I can save them the time of learning it themselves. My main issue is every time I plan to start I get cold feet and feel like I don't know enough, yet when I clean up my own audio I do just fine at least for my own purposes. Starting seems to be the hardest part because I've got too much of a tendency toward humility to ever feel ready for any kind of "professional work". Lately I've been just trying to stop putting a boundary between play and work, and just do and learn. It's been helping me make a lot more progress in my growth as an artist and producer/engineer than ever. But, I'm also pretty much all self-taught so I don't think my "professional insecurity" is ever gonna disappear until I find someone in-person who knows more than me (which I haven't found yet, sadly, I don't really have any connections that would help with that) who is willing to mentor me, or at the very least sit in a studio session and take notes/ask questions.

White Sea never says a plugin is unusable because it doesn’t have auto gain. He says auto gain is such a simple feature that he doesn’t understand why it’s not included in every plugin especially because of how useful it is.
@markovpavlov8651
@markovpavlov8651 Жыл бұрын
he also doesn't really know what he's talking about. auto-gain isn't just some boolean that the developer forgot to set to "true". you have to analyse the loudness (RMS) of the signal before and after the effect is applied, and then apply gain to compensate the difference. this is not an instantaneous process and will incur some amount of latency. maybe some latency isn't the end of the world with delay compensation, but it is still an important consideration, especially if the plugin is to be used while tracking.

For what it’s worth I’ve personally been enjoying your content for a while now. And I find it funny that you mention a specific scammy company because I’ve actually made a video and called them out for offering me money to promote some certain midi packs. Unethical is to take someone’s money, promote their product knowing that you’re fooling people. You could have made a more informed video in my opinion even if you wanted to roast me. My conscience is clean- I have NEVER shown something on my channel that I don’t believe in. Critical voices are valuable and need to be heard- the point of this video was to address the hateful comments and bullying that’s going on- NOT the creators. And guess what, I was criticised for not blaming the creators themselves. So go figure. At the end of the day we need voices like yours and other KZbinrs to call out any Pokémon figured plugins but seeing KZbinrs being attacked and bullied because they make a positive review is not healthy. I hope you can agree to this.

I appreciate that you enjoy my videos. But my point still stands, I wouldn't have made this video if you didn't state toward the end that you've been offered money for reviews before (and denied it because you didn't believe in the plugin.) Which implies that you have or would take money for a review if you do believe in the plugin? Correct?
@DomSigalas
@DomSigalas Жыл бұрын
@@Weaverbeats You have every right to roast me and I didn't expect you to take back what you said on the video. Your question tells me that you isolated this point in the video and got angry (and for some reason you took it personal? Maybe I'm wrong). I guess you didn't spend a bit of time checking my channel but went straight to go full aggression on the video. Fair enough. Ok, so here's a clear response: Whenever I make a video review of a plugin I *always* declare in the beginning of the video if it's sponsored video or not. And actually, most of my reviews are NOT sponsored. But whenever I have a sponsor, I always disclose it with full transparency to my audience. Then you can judge on your own *knowing* that this is a sponsored video. Does this justify your reaction? You'll be the judge of that and I am sure you think it does. Roast me, I'm ok with that and I have nothing to hide. But if you do, why don't you roast other channels as well that *do* sponsored videos and never disclose it and act like they are the saviours of the plug-in community? How do I know? Because I've been approached by the same companies, rejected the sponsorship and I see other channels making the video I was asked to make. Yup, jackpot I guess. And no, this wasn't for a scam company. My point being: you can agree or disagree with sponsored videos. You can be angry too if you believe that music production channels should NEVER have sponsors. But if you do some digging you will find the real bad guys. As far as I am concerned: check my content and see if it contains useful info. Hope this clarifies- take care man.🤟

I can agree to some extent that people need to chill because at the end of the day, it's just a plugin and you don't have to buy it if you don't like it. But I also think a good portion of plugin developers aren't really innovating anymore and are just creating plugins that already exist or are recreating vintage plugins having the same limitations as the original. Whitesea complains about newer plugins not having auto-gain, oversampling or demos because I think he's trying to force devs to innovate and improve. Why shouldn't this new plugin have auto-gain? Why can't it do oversampling? Yeah, sure it's not easy to implement those but there won't be any progression if the devs just stick to what's already there. Why would someone buy a new EQ if it's pretty much the same as what they already have only now it has a prettier UI and maybe ads miniscule amounts of saturation when you boost frequencies.

I'm pretty sure he is talking about Paul Third and White Sea Studios. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I think he makes a lot of good points. Mainly that a plugin having oversampling/auto gain compensation etc doesn't make it good or bad and I've seen many people in the online audio community start making these features a bigger deal than they are ever since these guys have been doing their plugin reviews. But he also acknowledges that it doesn't mean that these features don't matter and it can be valuable to analyze plugins in plugin doctor for example but at the end of the day we will use the tools that get the job done the best for us regardless of oversampling/auto gain compensation etc. Also by professional mixing environment I think he means in a environment you are using to work on professional audio jobs, not necessarily a half a million dollar studio or something so yes that could be your bedroom if that is where you are getting paid to work. But just to be clear I don't think that we as audio engineers shouldn't be critical about plugins, it's just that I think some people get distracted and caught up by these things instead of focusing on the craft of creating music.

Also, what white sea does is basically the equivalent of Plugin unboxing, just first impressions, often 100% uninformed, I find it entertaining altho judging plugins in this manner and often using mixing or producer oriented plugs on a full mix is quite silly. It's easy to mistake it for a review and thats what pisses many people off, he kind of exploits the low effort quick video rule that works very well on youtube and on social media generally. Can't knock the hustle if it works

I like White Sea a lot, the most obvious problems with him are as you say, that a lot of the stuff he reviews isn't really useful for a mixing engineer and he'll comment that it might have creative uses, but he doesn't really get into them. Also testing compressors on finished tracks, he needs to find better material for that. But I trust him more than dudes with a bunch of RGB lights in their guest room. And I think people who have seen a few of his videos understand those limitations, his preferences are kind of weird but he's consistent about them.

I actually get the sentiment this guy is getting at, he just doesn't know how to say it. I am more of a photographer than a producer, and this happens ALL the time in photography. People will obsess over gear reviews and having the sharpest lens and the best camera, no matter how marginally better it is, and using the best editing techniques and never actually get out of their house to photograph anything interesting, or, once they have "finished" buying gear, they can't make a decent photo to save their life because they haven't been practicing and now they are frustrated and angry at their GEAR instead of themselves and so they sell it all and invest in a different brand and the cycle repeats. Meanwhile, some 20 year old with a cheapo camera and lens is running circles around them because all they do is shoot. I've seen a kid win a photo contest with a 10 year old camera over people with $10,000 setups. So I guess what this guy is complaining about is people who spend too much time giving a shit about this or that plugin and spend all their time watching plugin reviews instead of actually just practicing.

I countered him with what I believe was good arguments in regards to how a niche hentai distortion plugin isn’t going to affect how women are already treated by the music production community, however I agreed with him that I would not in my life send a project or show a project to an individual I was working with in a professional or even non professional relationship (especially women) that uses Nani plugin and would go as far as to suggesting it would meet legal elements of sexual harassment in most western countries (this was as a hypothetical situation were plugins could be opened in project files even if the individual didn’t have it installed on their PC).

In my experience with mixing engineers/coproducers in a professional studio environment (including among some women) nobody really cares about the distortion graphics. There have been a couple of raised eyebrows, but it had more to do with the fact that I wasn’t using Thermal or Decapitator. Realistically, nobody is going to press charges over a third party plugin in a mix, and if it offends them that much they should sue the creators of Nani, not the producers. Finally you can avoid drama by flattening the track (like most professionals do before an export) which removes all evidence of Nani. Also, if the engineers want you to leave the tracks, just use Nani first, flatten it, and then add the other effects.

Everybody has their quirks. I watch White Sea, Dom Sigalas, your channel and many others. I want to get as many different viewpoints as possible. I sift through it all looking for take-aways -- and heck, creative types are notorious for being passionate in the extreme. If it veers off into the cringe zone, there's always my trusty sidebar.

This guy made no actual points. People should definitely review plugins and give their opinion. Also, free demos are the absolute best accompaniment to a plugin review. Lastly... I have some OLD plugins... which are amazing and I still use them all the time (AIR production plugins are still great)

0:09 oh i got reccd that vid earlier and it seemed like clickbait. ok sure one of the waves plugins, sure maybe that really messes everything up, wouldn’t surprise me, but i feel like proq3 is too commonly used to have anywhere near as much of an effect as he’s claiming

3:25 yeah white sea sometimes makes reviews where it’s clear he has no clue what he’s doing or what the plugin is meant for, and then then doesn’t seem to try to figure it out. the video on ST4B was so cringy to watch because of that

He seems to be trying to convince people NOT give bad reviews about bad plugins. Who cares? Is he worried plugin companies will have their feelings hurt? Theyre SELLING these to people and if they make a bad product they should be held accointable. I guess Im not surprised if he only takes money from plugin companies for his "reviews" - which are just ads then and not even reviews at all.

Think he's trying to sucker his loyal followers into buying bad plugins from companies that will sponsor him. I know KZbin has become a business for youtubers, but these type of youtubers\ influencers are the worst. They will lead a blind lamb to the slaughter house for a buck.

I think do a paid review is not bad lol, because they gonna tested and do a piece of content to the public, Is your decision if you buy it after the review. In his case he do very good reviews, He try the plugin on different materials and also teach trick and tips for the plugin (something that mix buss tv also does). But I also think that you miss the point. He is not talking about you or others you tubers, he is talking about the community itself. People comment bad things about plugins just because someone else said it, and that's why he is making this video. For professional work I get your point, but is a total different scenario when you work with companies that have tight deadlines (I think that what he mean).

Maybe he meant that noobs don't know what oversampling is, but they're outraged because it's missing from X,Y Plugin. A point that wouldn't have even known about if they hadn't watched someone telling them "There's no oversampling" OMG - I have to kill myself LIVE here right now..... Personally I get outraged if my plugins don't have enough purple.

Real studio environment : acoustically treated control room with premium acoustics in which high end monitors can help you critically listen the recording, editing, mixing and mastering. Yes, some great records have been mixed at home. But mastered at high end studios. Generally I agree with you on many points, but this isn't one of them. Can you mix a decent record in your bedroom - depending on a genre, you most likely can. Can you master it for AAA commercial distribution? Doubtfully. Also, please give me an example of five top albums "mixed at home", please.

Actually I think almost all the plugin/gear based videos are all paid, they usually talks a lot pros comparing to cons, then viewers will be lead to the affiliate links, once the payment is done, KZbinr got his share, even if he's not paid for making the video and exposure. So, if you're a full-time content maker and making content costs time therefore blocking other paid works, what would you do? 🤓
@shocktnc
@shocktnc Жыл бұрын
Anything with an affiliate link is biased, always assume it is. Does not mean its paid however, that would suggest that there are hundreds of mainstream reviewers taking money for a review and not announcing it, which is illegal.

Uugggg... I am so tired of the "If you aren't working in a Professional environment....blah blah blah", or "If you aren't using X software, then... blah, blah, blah"! You do, and use what works for you to make Great Music! Everything is available to everyone now days! It is not like it was 20 years ago or from my time, when there were ONLY Professional Studios and you had to sign a contract!
