Mogswamp has gone viral on KZbin in the past week. We will explore how he came to be super successful in a short time, and why it might not be a good idea to copy Mogswamp's idea.
We will look at why he didn't intend to go viral, and why others will struggle to go viral with his strategy.

Great analysis (and awesome editing)! I definitely did not expect the short to blow up as much as it did, but it does make a lot of sense why it did when it comes to the algorithm seeing a huge influx of subs/likes. I think you're totally right about it being really hard to replicate. My situation/channel is very unique, and I think for most people it could lead to lots of dead subscribers. The reason I'm not super worried is that based on analytics and comments, I think a lot of the people had already seen one or two of my shorts, but had never had a good reason to hit subscribe. I also think the 11 year journey of the channel is really compelling to people and converts at a higher rate than some newer KZbinrs who might be just as talented, but not around for as long.

The bad thing about that is that you get loads of useless (kind of like bot/spam) subscribers, who most of which won't even watch any of your new videos.

Agreed, but also, if even 1% of these new subscribers become loyal viewers, that is still a net positive for Mogswamp. Many of the subscribes were probably people who watched his shorts but never considered subscribing to him.

I was most happy about the fact that he didn't change his style of content, and it didn't get worse. A lot of content creators lose personality when they get more popular, which causes me to unsubscribe.

I don't think I've ever seen a short being made exclusively to promote this sort of thing, but for over a year now some youtubers have been putting this kind of challenge on their videos. Spokeishere, for example, in the middle of the videos promises to explode tnt, kill creatures and other stuff depending on the video in the same amount as his recent subscription growth. Never seen them following any of these through, but it's something that has been in the KZbin game for a while at this point

Oh cool, I knew there would be more Minecraft-related examples on this type of challenge. I'll look into it more. Also, it's a shame if they didn't follow through on some of their promises. I hope anyone who copies Mogswamp's idea know that follow-through is important

Mogswamp did such a mistake with that short video that he uploaded but he deserves such a popularity because he is doing something different in the community and as you said i dont think anyone gonna fet that high if they actually copy him. At the end of the day i hope he likes what he is doing and he doesn't force himself to make content because this is gonna cause mental health problems.

Personally, I think this is horrible for a channel. People from shorts that you "bait" into subbing dont necessarily enjoy your content and will forget about you within minutes. I hope that this won't negatively affect his channel

Hmmm there’s definitely a dilemma here. If we are talking long term there’s a very good chance that will happen, but still it’s eyes on your channel that wouldn’t have normally. If he played it correctly he could get a lot out of it. I guess we will see 😮

I can see that. This incentive would likely also encourage alt accounts to subscribe, because people want to add more to the challenge. It's still fun to hit the milestones, and I hope Mogswamp does pull a few new viewers from the influx of subscribers. But yeah, subscriber counts are just a vanity metric now.

A youtube speedrunner I watch, Sam Dao, mined 1 million blocks of dirt in survival. It took him a week of streaming (not non-stop thank goodness), so this should take mogswamp several months.

As of the time writing this, it looks like he's at 12.1 million blocks. When you consider that a superflat world has 3 layers of dirt that's the same size as a map that's been zoomed out as far as it can go or 16 default maps.

the main problem with stuff like this is that a lot of the new people arent subscribing for the content, and instead subscribing for the pain of mining millions of dirt, so once all of this is over, a lot of those new subscribers are gonna unsub, and yes this will introduce a lot of new people to the channel who are subscribing not only for the dirt, but also for the content, but overall this isnt a permanent solution to getting more subs and it wont last, so i do not recommend it also this is an alt account but as a small youtuber whenever i upload, theres always a couple people that see my new video and remember i exist, then unsub. so it is very much a thing

People will always do mindless and silly challenges just to gain fame. Whether it's copying someone, doing stupid challenges involving playing for an extremely long time or doing very difficult challenges or stealing other user's content to edit and re-upload on their own channel. Never heard of him, but rip to him btw since most of his "subscribers" are mostly bots and spammers just to watch his misery of collecting these blocks then they'll "unsubscribe" afterwards.
