Since a lever can't open the door, you can assume it's using the trick where the door was placed in a way so that when its open, the door appears shut. ... so just break the active piece of redstone connecting the machine to the door (If there was one) and boom.

I like durability because it taught me not to be stingy on consumables when everything has a limited use suddenly you are presented with a choice of whether you are going to play it safe with cheap but weak items or choose fun over what might be the smartest choice and I chose fun and what surprised me is that far more often then I expected choosing to use your strongest tools despite being at risk of losing them was just as effective if not more so than playing it safe and often the games were balanced in a way where just as you were about to run out of durability on one powerful tool you'd be able to replace it and learning this about breakable tools helped me to not be the sort of player who never uses consumable items or special moves that draw from a special renewable bar(eg mp) because what if I need it later so I'll always be grateful for breakable tools for teaching me that lesson... with that being said minecraft has some of the wrost implementations of this mechanic I've ever played it gives none of these benefits and is just a poor implementation all around. Now for my controversial opinion to get people fighting: if your going to have durability then go all in none of this to repair nonsense if your going to make items temporary then make them temporary if your game has a crafting system other than just repairing them that should be the avenue taken to new equipment not circumventing your durability system
