Hope you all enjoyed the video! Remember, I've got nothing against MrBeast or any of the other KZbinrs mentioned in this commentary. Also, I should mention that the video idea did have inspiration from another Commentary KZbinr named SixStriker. This inspiration only went as far the thumbnail and title. If you watch our commentaries, they speak on the issue in completely different ways. Just wanted to clear it up in case someone thinks they've "seen" this video before. Now, let me know what you all think about the MrBeast Era of KZbin in the comments, I'll be reading them all :)

It's "social engineering" at it's finest. Why else would Microsoft buy Minecraft. These YT'bers are called "influencers", for a reason, because they INFLUENCE. America, the entire world for that matter is under "psychological operations", and the computer is the most used weapon against the masses, whereby the "satanists" are using children as a "progressive" means to an end.

Just to clarify a thing, when you re-watch a video, it's like if you re-played the start, it's usually a measure for how many people re-watched the video. not how many times someone re-played the video at the start, just wanted to clarify. Love the vid!
@FizzyBanger
@FizzyBanger 2 жыл бұрын
well, yeah I agree thats also very likely that people are scrubbing to the start of the video to watch it again. Not sure how many people actually watch a long-form video more than once in a single sitting. I think it's more likely that people are double-tapping to rewind back a few seconds to watch the intro again, but I wish I could back that up with something solid. Another likely cause is when KZbin (mobile) started doing this thing where the video autoplays on the feed before you've clicked on it. That would cause a lot of rewinds too.

Very well done Fizzy! This 'bigger and better' seems to hit the Hardcore World creators more than anything I believe, or at least thats what I see in posts across social media. I know for me personally, when making thumbnails I try to make a conscience effort to not fall into that trap of beast-ifying it. Don't get me wrong, I follow a lot of advice that Mr. Beast gives, but I think its important to find your own style. If anything, now I try to make my thumbs in a certain style that is easily picked out from the crowd. I have adopted a more darker, moodier style of thumbs, that I hope are instantly recognizable in a large pool of oversaturated ones you see nowadays. I can't do colorful thumbnails, they never perform well, but when they are dark and edgy, they do good, if not great.

I personally don’t have anything against Minecraft challenge videos, because a lot of time it’s just about people pushing themselves for a bit of fun and a sense of achievement, but when it all feels like a direct copy of everything else, that’s when I don’t like it. Id love to actually see thought-process behind all these crazy challenges but instead it’s just a load of hyper-edited hyper-polished content that gets thrown at your face in the course of five minutes.

However, right after he digs the block on top, the bottom dirt block grew grass ontop instantly. That is some very fast grass growth! It's very rare to see that, so i thought i'd point it out :)

This video was really well put together and I appreciate the words you chose. It's a struggle for most, trying to even get noticed can feel somewhat impossible nowadays. I've tried so many different editing styles. Every successful video I've had, has actually been rather chill and taken me no more than a day or two to edit. I tried doing text for everything I said during a video once and it made no difference to my retention. Overediting is big issue and extremely time consuming, it's why I really enjoy things like Iskall's Vault Hunters series or Hermitcraft because the editing is super basic and it's enjoyable to watch. Another great example is PhoenixSC that guy's content is always weird, pretty chill and has very minimal editing yet he's extremely successful. I'm personally going to relax more when it comes to making content, so instead of spending weeks editing something that won't get noticed I'd rather spend a week working on something that I got genuine enjoyment out of and I think a lot of creators could take a step back by chilling the f out lol

I hear about this stuff all the time and honestly, im torn. I get a fair bit of comments saying people "miss my old videos" now that i've switched to 100 days content, but I used to get 10k views a vid and now I get anywhere from 200k to 1+ mil. People will constantly complain about the new state of MC content and that its worse, but if thats the case idk why I get way more views on the "worse" and "less popular" content. To me it screams *vocal minority* and that the vast majority of people dont in fact mind it since thats where all the views go. If it truly was worse content or less popular, people wouldnt continue to do it after seeing views drop. Its fair to say its bad content in the eyes of some, but those appear to be the few instead of the many.

when i was younger, i used to be fanatic to a youtuber called @Jazzghost (he was one of the most successful minecraft brazilian youtuber, prob top 5), he was my hero, he used to make simple hypixel build battle videos, survival series with absolutely no mods, cuts or editing, he used to play in private servers with other minecraft brazilian youtubers he was extremely chill, funny, and he had one of (or the) most loyal subscribers in the brazilian youtube history...... so, the golden ages collapsed: he started to brutally edit the videos, make fast-paced trendy minecraft videos with fake expressions and started to lose originality, if it wasn't bad like that, he started making videos of other games, mobile games, trendy weird fishy mobile games, i really couldn't recognize him anymore, the shy jazzghost from the build battle, from the 2013 vanilla survival series, from the numerous old and classic mod series, so i gave up on him, it's a very sad history and i still miss him old content a lot.

To be honest, I miss Minecraft content that were literally just singleplayer playthroughs where the content creators would talk to their audiences. It was a lot more chill, slower paced, and actually felt like the creator was trying to engage with his viewers. The high energy stuff is just so common nowadays that it's almost robotic, like someone's copying and pasting the same videos over and over again. Even though he turned out to be a scumbag, PaperbatVG's Minecraft videos from the early 2010s were some of my favorite videos ever.

I think you did really well on this video. The points are great and they get across the state of the KZbin environment at the moment, with the sensationalisation and forced retention. One thing that wasn't touched on though is how this damages the rest of the Minecraft community. Let me explain. As you mention many people (particularly younger viewers) like this over-edited style and the shocked face meta. The familiarity means they can (and do) consume HUGE amounts of these videos. The problem with this is how the algorithm works. 2 of the key factors considered are retention and CTR (Click Through Rate). The forced retention and re-viewing pushes the retention levels on those videos to an unattainable level for a normal video. Combine that with high CTRs as similar (meta thumbnail with little interest in anything different) video after video is clicked then this pushes the algorithm to share these videos to more people. This creates a barrier to entry. Home and Browse pages are so filled with this content that anything different simply doesn't get seen. The algorithm also then has a set an expectation for retention rates and CTR needed before a video is shared, that even great videos that don't use these types of retention hacks can't meet. The effect of this? Any KZbinr who doesn't jump on the bandwagons will find it almost impossible to get exposure. Without a serious following then the videos won't get enough interest to push them into the the algorithm to even give people a chance to be seen. This is shown by the fact that historically when a channel got to around 10,000 subscribers they were seen as having enough followers to influence the algorithm and grow organically. New videos would be watched and YT would take notice, showing them to more viewers. Now this number needed is probably closer to 250,000 before they can be seen! The big get exponentially bigger and therefore hold more and more sway over trends. It's all well and good MrBeast telling people to be themselves and not follow others, but the breakout bar has been set so high in the current meta that this isn't feasible without extraordinary luck. I know that MrBeast isn't to blame for the way KZbin works. But taking it to the extreme (and talking so much about how he does it) means that the he's created a vicious circle. Where discover pages are filled with so many clones that you'd have to scroll an unrealistic amount to find something new and inventive. Smaller channels then have to languish or conform. Sadly I think the only way that YT will change is through an algorithm change focussing on other metrics. But this is unlikely as the goal is to keep people watching for as long as possible.

This is why I actually watch and support smaller KZbinrs. Obviously I still watch MrBeast because it’s almost like an actual event when he posts but mostly watching smaller creators and seeing them succeed is so satisfying. What sucks about the KZbin Minecraft community is that, here, love for your work doesnt exist, people just want success and that might not be something bad, but it's sad at least, seeing the same thing again and again and again. More unique or content that doesnt follow this format has less views and attetion but... idk, I know it's hard but people try to go for the easy way, copying exactly what had worked without putting any touch of themselves and I really dont enjoy that, I cant understand how people find interesting to see the exact same thing over and over, same formats, same thumbmails, same personality. There is no love for making videos, there is just interest in becoming viral and having easy success.

I understand that in order to succeed on KZbin, you have be like the best. I have nothing against people with this hyper active, over edited style because I get the work that goes into it. But your right, there are far too many Mr Beast-like channels trying to copy him for success. They don’t have the passion for KZbin and just want the money. Something Mr Beast said in his old videos sticks with me: “if your video is boring, what’s stopping the viewer from clicking off and watching someone better?” He was referring to stuff like personality and editing. I LOVE good editing it’s my favorite thing in any video, but this modern style is just kinda lazy. I haven’t learned it, but I’m sure that if I did, I might be able to do it fast. Everything about these videos is optimized, that’s the perfect word for it. I guess we as the small people have to step up and prove these Mr Beast copy cats that old fashion can still cut it on KZbin

As a smaller youtuber trying to get onto the platform (My uploads not having a set schedule might not help my case) I don't enjoy editing. Heck, my channel is videoes where the most "editing" I've done is crop a couple of parts out of 1 or 2 of my videoes or splice a couple together. I feel like the amount of editing is daunting, so I decided to just go the opposite route. A vodlike, more chill video where sure, I'll do commentary and stuff over what I'm doing (And haven't face revealled, I am not doing that for a reason) but at the same time, I can be... myself in the commentary. I just think with everything on the platform, getting established as a very small youtuber is outright daunting

Well, here is some advice I'll give you. I don't know much as I'm still learning, but when you are starting off, you just need to keep making videos. As much as it doesn't seem like it, but I have made about 400 KZbin videos over the years. Most of them are private now because they sucked, but with every video I learned a new thing. Editing can be a pain, especially if you think of it as necessary for the algorithm. When I edit, I do it knowing that at the end, I'll have a video that I'd love to show people. I think you can definitely learn to enjoy editing, even if it's just basic cuts and voice overs. Only do what you need to, but also find ways to make it enjoyable. Even listening to music or podcasts can keep you motivated while editing too! Anyways, hope this helps :)

This is a superb analysis of a problem that is very apparent to all Minecraft creators right now. There is almost an expectation that videos should follow the MrBeast format, and many viewers lose interest if a video doesn't slap them round the face within the first 30 seconds. It's reassuring to hear that others out there are equally tired of these generic, over-hyped, and over-edited videos. I've always believed that there is still an appetite for "old-school" Minecraft content, and I hope that in time these videos will make a comeback :)

Yeah, it's an unavoidable thing in the Minecraft community now. Even I keep finding myself making overly-energetic content to cater to my main audience. As much as I want to go the nostalgic route for a bit because there are certainly people who will enjoy it, I don't want to alienate the audience that I already have. It's a matter of time to see how this currently vogue format evolves, I guess.

The current thumbnail trend has been around for 10+ years, look at a bunch of old videos and its the same idea TobyGames, Smosh and =3, etc. all had the crazy reaction face with something in the BG in 2011. It's just more fine tuned now. Creating a competitive environment isn't a bad thing. There will always be pockets of YT that people will enjoy with more than large enough audiences. Otherwise content like Casey Neistat or Chamberlin would exist rn. If you don't worry about being the biggest, just do your own thing and have fun with it IMO. The editing can be annoying. KZbinrs have to try harder to not copy MrB, but instead be influenced and mold what they learned. I would say Ryan Trahan and Airrack are great examples of using smart storytelling with optimized techniques (such as the editing) without just copying the style and pushing it to 1000%. Overall, if you think KZbin is boring now, just try harder to find the KZbin channels you like. They DO exist lol. Also, if you feel pressured to create Mr Beast like content, but don't enjoy it, just don't do it. If you have an established viewer base, they like you for you, so be yourself and make the content you like. It's scary, and easier said than done. I mean, I have no subs at all, but you have to do what makes you happy. KZbin goes through many many many metas and shifts, the Mr Beast meta will pass as did the Vlog meta, the commentary meta, the Minecraft meta, etc. etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Kinda motivating too, because sometimes I have a bit of an identity crisis when it comes to what I want to make for my channel. I still try to bring my energy into what I create, but sometimes I do get lost following the latest trend or format. But as you said, it's just about finding that core audience that'll enjoy what you put out. Tailoring to the widest audiences all the time does nothing to build that core connection. Lots of insights in these comments, so thanks for taking the time to write it out!

Yeah, I've tried to do retention hacking with my content, but sometimes all you need is just good pacing, good commentary audio, and a good understanding of background music. Flashy edits don't always need to be a factor for success.

i thought it was just me being unable to find the right channels when minecraft content became like this i thought maybe i was just on the "kid side" of youtube but after seeing so many youtubers that had their unique style loose it to this new one i think not i have to now hop to the games where the primary audience is an older community to get free from this
@FizzyBanger

yeah, one of my friends started making Mario 64 content, and was able to escape from the younger audiences because only older people are more interested in that game. There's still a mature community out there for Minecraft, it's just not as popular.

i wanted to share a bit of different insight i had with regards to the example of a "mr beast-ified" youtuber you used and the comment u made about the initial spike in watchtime. personally, i think that spike might instead be from ppl watching the first couple of seconds and then immediately skipping to a later part of the video, or just clicking off entirely due to the overload. that might jsut be me using my own personal, odd behaviors and applying them to ppl who definitely arent like me, but i know for once i tend to click off videos that overload me at the beginning, even if i might find the subject offered in the beginning to be interesting. as well, why would someone watch the beginning of a video just because it happens to be the most overloading, wouldnt ppl be most likely to skip to the part of the video that has the most actual emotional intensity such as a climax of a "plot" or something similar ? that might just be me overanalysing this tho lol, this is certainly an interesting topic regardless

I think building content is definitely still wanted on the platform, but I haven't spent enough time on that side of KZbin to know what people would want to see. If you do creative building, then all I've got is tutorials. If you do survival, then your options could be making big builds in a let's play. Don't take my advice as all there is though, I'm sure I'm missing on key points where Minecraft building content can shine.

Be real Mr beasts formula is a good way to keep viewer retention so it makes sense everyone is gonna copy it since viewer retention = longer watch time = more ads watched so KZbin’s algorithm promotes it because youtube is a business the viewers are the product so the best bet is just doing something different from challenges,

I do really like this video but I would like to mention that "Minecraft 100 days" style of videos were not formatted by Mr Beast, if anything they are usually the complete opposite to usual Mr Beast editing style, they are slower and much longer and were started by Luke The Notable. They are oversaturated but I don't think they are a big reason this style of videos are a problem.

Although this video is from over a year ago I still feel the need to comment. I wasn’t a minecraft youtuber but I feel like creating gaming content in general became too complex after 2020. Everyone was locked up and had way too much time on their hands so editing every second of the video made sense. To me back then, it didn’t… I’ve always loved videos like this one of yours that I just watched for 15 minutes straight and I could have it turned on while doing something else and not miss a thing. nowadays everything is about the attention of the viewer, hyper editing, screaming… for what? Why put effort into such editing if there’s a whole other side of youtube patiently waiting for good *old type of content. I stopped making videos because the gaming community spiked from cringe to cool all because of lockdown and then the pressure of pumping out precisely edited content while just starting high school was overwhelming for me so I simply quit and forgot about my youtuber era. I’ll forever miss it 🤷🏻‍♀️

The viewer expectation has been taken to the roof which is why its going to be extremely difficult to succeed as a youtuber in the current time. U wanna be an irl youtuber? Yeah, if the currently trending content doesn't appeal, then the viewer won't have any joy on the trending tab. And any creators that want to push up to trending will need to emulate the current style or break out of it with something new. I find that the algorithm does a good job at recommending what I want to watch (slow-paced content, usually), but I'm not sure about other viewers.

As someone who's watched youtube and minecraft youtube religiously for almost a decade I can safely say: no. All of these stylistic decisions have already been happening for ages, with the mainstream leaning more and more into it. Mr. Beast is just a product of that environment, and because he got so big off of it and embodies it so clearly he just becomes a lightning rod for this sort of criticism
