Yes, so true. We're all making some big strides to overcome the permit issues with cob homes though. In the next couple of years, it'll be much easier I think.

I've been going back and forth with my father about this for awhile. After living in Houston (4th largest city in the US) for 40 years, I'm tired of people. I would rather die on the floor of my kitchen in the middle of nowhere. The property I'm looking at is about an hour from the nearest hospital (no trauma center) and I'm ok with it. The nearest trauma center is almost 4 hours away. But I've looked into services like MedJet and seems like that's worth the price.

And I wouldn't trust the fema maps. Check with surrounding neighbors about flooding patterns. I had a house in an area that fema changed from a flood zone to a non-flood zone. The area had serious flooding just a few years prior to the changes. Hummm
