I went to prep school with one of Admiral Zumwalt's (Chief of Naval Operations during Vietnam) daughters. The family lived at the Naval Observatory. We had a lot of girls whose parents were attached to various embassies, and one of them was getting married after graduation. The Zumwalts graciously held the shower at the Observatory. At the time, I was impressed that my classmate had a bedroom and an attached separate study area. I was also impressed by the white decor. I couldn't imagine keeping all of that clean with kids running around. A large staff helps, I suppose. 😄

Calvin Coolidge lived in the Willard Hotel during his time as Veep (1921-23). There was no security for VPs back then and most of the time he could go about without people even recognizing him.
