It's true. Maybe something changed on the power delivery of the Series S and they could save a few $$$ on the cooling system. Microsoft overengineers their cooling solutions. If they test the hardware and come to the conclusion that the cooling solution is overkill for the console that's fine by me. Even if the new Series S runs a couple degrees hotter, it certainly won't make any difference on the longevity of the hardware.
@RobRotz-t6g18 күн бұрын
@relaxingstuff24 heat kills electrical components. So yes it can affect the longevity over time. A couple degrees might not seem like a big deal but long term it is. Once again, we need to talk about how heat transfer works. First, the exhaust temperature alone does not tell you how much energy is being pulled away from the heat source. Second, at steady-state, both consoles if running at the same wattage, are going to exhaust the same heat. Let's dig more into both of these... Heat transfer: The amount of heat being removed from the system is equal to the mass of air * heat capacity * delta T. If we assume that the starting temperature is the same in both cases, a higher exhaust temperature means more heat is being removed at the same air flow rate. However, at a lower air flow rate, but higher exit temperature, you could have the same heat removal. Either way, exhaust temperature alone does not tell you how much heat is being removed. You need to also have the flow rate of the air to determine how much energy is being removed. Steady-state: The second big problem with your argument is steady-state. If both consoles are running at the same TDP (and if we assume the proper definition of "watts of energy the thing is using" and not funny AMD math), then the same amount of heat must be exhausted by both units. If we do not exhaust the heat, then it must accumulate. If it accumulates, the device will start to heat up and must either thermally throttle to protect itself (thus pulling less watts and reducing the energy input and energy that must be removed) or catch on fire and melt. So, unless the new version is throttling or a puddle of melted plastic and silicon, it must be adequately cooling. Similar to the above, we also need to talk about the comment that "if you put the new on in an enclosed area, it'll be hotter". This is the same problem as the steady-state argument. If both consoles are drawing the same amount of watts, both consoles must exhaust the same amount of heat energy. It must go somewhere. If both consoles are in an enclosed area, both are going to suffocate. The amount of energy added to the enclosed space is the same, the amount of temperature rise in the enclosed area is the same. (Note for the record: I'm not defending XBox. As a PC user, I have no skin in the console wars. I'm just an engineer that doesn't like misinformation.)

Austin, you need to hear this yet again. There are engineers who have had years to see how the system operates and the kind of cooling it needs long term. They clearly decided simplifying it and stripping back a bit was fine, have no impact on longevity noise or heat. It also happens to reduce cost and that’s the end of it. Companies are not gonna spend more on manufacturing when they flat out have no need to. This was the same thing with the 1100 PS5s. I’ve had that since it came out and it runs, sounds and operates identically to my launch one. I trust engineers with years to decades of experience more than your opinion on it lol.

@deegarkie559824 күн бұрын
The thing is, the way the transition from TSMC 7 to TSMC 6 works, is that, its actually just 7nm++ the designs are forwads and backwards compatible, you dont need to re-architect or re-mask, sure if you do you get better performance and efficiency, but you still get a decent bump without it The price per wafer is effectively the same which means that each chip to microsoft is actually cheaper on 6nm because more of them fit on each wafer The main reason to not go with a 6nm port is so you dont have to re-engineer the cooler But the weird thing is, they already re-engineered the cooler, as if they were anticipating the chip producing less heat I genuinely think that once they run through their supply of 7nm, that they'll just quietly switch over to 6nm, same performance, but thermals to reflect this new weaker cooler. The only reason they shouldnt switch to 6nm is if they already have way too much 7nm and dont expect to sell through it all, which may be the case, they designed this new chassis for 6nm, but realized there is not enough demand to run through 7nm.

The motherboard ssds on the consoles should have used the standard 2280 nvme ssds since it's common on laptops, full size desktop pcs and even on the ps5. Amazon sells a bunch of 2280 nvme ssds with 8tb being the highest capacity from sabrent even though the 8tb sabrent ssd cost more than the xbox itself. I wish that 4tb would be the standard capacity for the consoles since the the newer games take up more storage. For my ps4 pro, I constantly have to uninstall and install a new game since the 1tb is not enough space to save the game to the internal storage for my game saves. Constantly installing and uninstalling games from the internal storage will eventually wear out the internal storage. On my ps4, sony does not have something similar to samsung magician software to keep track of the ssd to make sure that the internal storage is running at optimal condition for the long term just in case the storage needs to be replaced with a newer capacity storage device. On windows, with samsung magician software with samsung ssds, it will let me know if there some issue or some kind of failure is about to happen to my ssds. I have 5 samsung ssds on my gaming desktop pc. I have 3 samsung 860 evo sata ssd and 2 samsung 970 evo plus nvme ssd. I bought these ssds back in 2019 when I built my 4k Intel core i9-9900k desktop cpu, msi godlike motherboard gaming pc with g skills trident z royal 32gb ram at 4000 mhz at cl 17 latency and timings at 17-17-17-37. I wanted the fastest speeds at the lowest latency money can buy for 32gb that my motherboard supports since my motherboard supports 4600 mhz but 16gb of ram was only available at 4600 mhz back in 2019. I could not find 32gb ram with 4600 mhz with the lowest latency since the latency was too high since I needed samung b die for overclocking the ram with highest clock speeds with the lowest latency possible. I use the jbod format for my ssds so I have the full capacity for all my ssds.

Didn’t we went through this higher temp business with the Revised PS5 heatsink? Everyone defended Sony saying the newer smaller cooler with higher temps means more efficient! Ie it works better
@danielheitz739323 күн бұрын
The higher exhaust temps tell us nothing on their own, we care about heat flux which also requires we know the mass flow rate of the exhaust air. Together this can tell us how much heat it's making, but this is pointless as heat output is not related to the temperature of the die. I love you guys but please be more careful on your testing. THAT BEING SAID, the smaller lighter heatsink with less heat pipes is most likely going to cause higher die temperatures, but this is all the insight we can gain.

Do these guys understand that as technology advances parts can get smaller and more efficient. Getting new and better parts on a board can make some irrelevant. Maybe removing that block part makes better air flow which moves more heat out of the system. That could be why the exhaust temps are higher. So they improved without raising the price. These guys need to stick to funny videos instead of trying to analyze things.

Well, it is cool they are giving the Surface "easy to repair" treatment to Xbox. But... still locking the SSD is seriousy backward. They can and should encrypt *the files* not the drive, not the filesystem. The important stuff could be done on a smaller internal flash chip and then the Xbox would pull the OS and encrypted whatever files if they ever got corrupted. Imagine that, an Xbox that repaired itself and you could keep playing games. The external one being proprietary is even more ridiculous. One of the big reasons that if you're a casual gamer, you should go for Nintendo. Oh well... guess now there won't be a next one and there is no point.

Ah man. I am finally ready to pick one of these up. I want want to play Fight Sim 24 ar a level higher than my PC which is about to become obsolete. I'm super late to this gen of consoles. Latest ever since ATARI. This chip and fan thing makes me iffy. I like Microsoft XBox, the system, the games, what it's about. I reluctantly stared with 360 and grew to love it. The main issue I have with the Xbox, the only issue is I'm the type to play like mad for 3 months, stop for 8 months or a year, come back to it and what happens is eventually, a few years into owning the console 360 and One, it gets to a point where is I play a game for 1 hour, especially 2 hours, ESPECIALLY if it's all all day session, in the summer, it's hot and it puts out a burning electrical chemical smell which gets everywhere and stays for weeks. It's a weird smell, It gets in my clothes and because of that it's all I smell constantly, which is crazy because my clothes are in another room with the door closed and nothing gets rid of it. It creeps in everywhere In the apartment. stays for 2 weeks even without play, and then disappears slowly over a week. I always think it will burn the smell away away if I play enough, but it just gets worse. I have a sneaking suspicion it's that thermal paste they use to connect chips. That's just what I think. I have my Xbox One in the box for years. I haven't played it in years. It's the only downside to Microsoft XBox. That burning electrical smell which always seems to happen. I hope these changes don't guarantee that.
