The Series S is basically just a low level PC, the Series X is a mid range PC (maybe slightly over mid range). If you can make a game work adequately on a low level PC, you've done like 90% of the work to get it to work on Series S adequately.

I think the best move would be of Microsoft could just release an OS update that officially turns the X and S into full PCs capable of playing the Xbox games, but also gaining access to things like Steam for PC game. Not that it would happen, even if they could make it work. If they would take this approach, it's more likely to be in the next round of hardware which will officially just be a PC with xbox game playback.

The Xbox Series X and PS5 GPU is equivalent to the 2070, both of them are clocked at or around 3.5 GHz, and have 16 GB of RAM. Neither the PS5 or Series X are over mid range, they're like upper low end or mid range PCs.

I just don't get how developing for Series S is harder than making sure Low settings work on PC, it's just a PC with a weird version of Windows at the end of the day, it's nothing that special. If you can't make your game work on a console that is still more powerful than the most common gaming PC on Steam, that's on you, not Microsoft.

So you missed the part at the beginning about matching features on the S and the X. BG3 couldn't do split screen on the S so until they figured that out, they couldn't release on either. So if you want to really PUSH the x... With some cool feature like split screen, but the S has no shot in hell to run that feature, you're left removing the feature instead. You might have a Diablo decision to load everyone's inventory when you pass by... Well that takes a lot of resources so you can't add more inventory slots because the S can't load more... Yeah that's a dog shit dev choice, but it's real world.

It's ever so slightly different specs make it harder to work with its not quite a 1:1 for pc low settings as even there is above where the series s can run its coding drm everything about also it being a digital system with 360ish gb of storage would 100% indicate it's more likely to be used purely with game pass and would hurt devs as games won't be bought as much thanks to the lack of enough storage space

One big issue I can see right off the bat is memory. A minimum spec PC would be 16GB RAM and a GTX 1060 with 6 GB VRAM, giving you 22 GB to play with, let's take 3 GB off for overhead and you still got 13+6 GB. The Series S has 10 GB. So even without accounting for overhead, a Series S still has almost half the memory of a minimum spec PC.

The hardware needed for low settings on PC for newer games is still more powerful than a Series S. The development on the new generation of consoles begins years before they are released which is why by the time they come out they are outdated compared to PC hardware.

What is holding the generation back is there was no need for it to exist other than 'it was time' there were no great technological/hardware leaps like there were going from cartridge to cd to dvd to blu ray to slightly prettier again blu ray with the one/PS4. The xbox series S is a consumer win and was needed because otherwise budget gamers on all platforms would be left out because games would not get released for lowered specs on pc and for ps4, switch, or steam deck/other decks, nearly as soon if at all. It also forces developers to optimize games so they are so insanely large and buggy because they can get away with it.

Launching the Series S at $200 less during an economic recession was really smart. I knew people who hadn't owned an XBOX in years, but they bought the Series S because it was cheaper and because they were available when the PS5 was nearly impossible to get at regular retailers. I actually owned a Series X but I sold it to a friend because the Series S was all the XBOX I needed. I don't even use GamePass, I just buy a lot of games on sale in the XBOX digital store.

Its very sad to say, but the Series S was a shortsighted decision from Microsoft. Yeah, more people will buy it over the 500 - 600 options, but its not worth it if third party can't support it properly, and unlike Nintendo, Microsoft's first party games aren't appealing enough to justify a console purchase (Them again, Microsoft is basically a third party developer at this point).

While I understand what your saying, I disagree with you completely. Neither console is at fault here. They are what they are. The amount of money you pay denotes the value of power you get. While developers have to develop games that run on both consoles. Else Microsoft won't release the game on either until the issue is fix. I beleive the whole issue would go away if ms drops this. It's like saying if you purchase a very low end pc and expect to run the very latest games at 60fps. It just struggles but can do it.. But in a pic settings you can turn down the graphics resolution settings. Perhaps like in html code that recognises the type of screen you have and the size layout so it can correctly show the websites page with the appropriate hardware. The same could be done for the series s and x. But like I said before I believe Microsoft should not hold back games developers. People should expect their to be a distance of you do go for the lower powered option

​@@576turkyjust look at game size today and compared it to 5 years ago. My Xbox is constantly updating the games and the same game might have multiple updates. And they're not small they're quite pig. Now this is all to do with textures I believe. As that is what is usually the case for the sizes ballooning. Just looking at this way you take a photo at 640 x 480 resolution and compare that to the size add 4K for instance. Depending upon the format willt dictate the file size. Back in 2000 when internet was just getting traction I was working on web pages this was exactly the same scenario. I had to implement code to determine the screen size of a users who was visiting the web site. Developers have got lacy to a extent. I beleive their is unnecessary code being used. Technically the series x m performance to the PlayStation 5. Apparently some games run better on this. This is part of the reason. This is why ms needs to get rid of VG this policy

I think it should be up to the game dev to support or not. It’s in their best interest to support as it requires optimization meaning you can reach more audiences on low spec pcs or the switch even. But, if they want to create tech demo worthy cutting edge gfx - then they can do that as well and not support low end hardware.. Been like this forever on PC - they always have minimum requirements, some games require high end, some you can run on a potato. Let the game dev and gamer decide what they want …

I've been using the Series S for 2-3 years now and I use to play older titles. The games that came out in the past 4-5 years do not really interest me enough to justify a higher priced console. The Series S really gets looked over, it's a good console. It feels much better to play on than the Xbox One and plays the same games anyways.

Why would you want to make games for a console that only performs slightly better than previous generations of consoles? It makes no sense. Looking back with everything we know now, the Series S was a mistake. The XBox is coming into this new generation in last place with a much smaller consumer base. Obviously devs will prioritise PlayStation optimization over the XBox bcs of a larger consumer base. Then Microsoft expects these devs to put even more time and resources into the Series S when the XBox brand in total is trailing in 3rd place.

I really think the pro systems kinda helped ruin the market of home consoles. It's nice to have a more powerful system to push graphics, but why not just get a PC? Especially now since all these systems barely have anything exclusive. Consoles have mainly been centered around affordability with the profits coming from game sales. I refuse to believe that the average person gives a crap about if Fortnite is playing in 2k or 4k on their TV, and if they do care that much they would probably already have a PC. GamePass basically has same problem as all streaming services. All movies are doomed about the profit if they do not get enough real sales on theaters. DVD sales are dead and physical games are somewhat close to death. On that point GamePass is basically start of death of real games. Or we gonna get back to lower cost of games that has good story, great cutscenes and just forget focusing just only graphics. Have some real themess and art styles like indie studios have been doing for long time.

The Series S is perfect for the gamer on a budget, and the gamer that only plays a couple of games. Their favourite sports franchise and/or COD. The Series S can be purchased, played with for a couple of years and then traded in for a Series X, as a mid-life upgrade for the budget concious gamer. Add on that game pass can be got for free via the MS rewards program, then the Series S has its place, and is perfect for many gamers.

I wonder what it would be like to have all the original xbox games but with the modern xbox series x graphics with the same exact gameplay and controls as the original xbox. For example, the original xbox with xbox series x graphics with the same exact games as the original xbox console but with modern graphics. The same thing would apply to original playstation one with ps5 graphics with the same exact gameplay and controls as the playstation one. I always wondered what the original xbox, original playstation one and the n64 games would look like with modern graphics and even with the option to play natively in 4k. I have my n64 connected to my 65 inch samsung curve qled 4k tv but I wonder how my n64 games look like natively without any upscaling. For example, golden eye 007 and perfect dark in native 4k with hdr with no upscaling. I have the xbox series x, non oled nintendo switch and ps4. I don't have the ps5 because the library of games is still too small compared to the ps4. The xbox series x came out the same year as the ps5 while having a larger library of games and being backwards compatibility with my whole library of physical copies of games that I still have from my original xbox to the xbox 360. The ps4 is not backwards compatibility but at least it has a large library of games and has classic games. The xbox series x and ps5 barely have any classic titles. The titles on the xbox series x and the ps5 titles pales in comparison to the original xbox, xbox 360, ps2 and the ps3 title. I'm comparing the older consoles because they are classic consoles with classic titles. The newer xbox and sony consoles just have better graphics with non stop micro transactions. I miss being be able to unlock stuff in the games by putting hours to unlock extra content for the games. Nowadays, you just pay for the extra content thru micro transactions. It's free and fun to unlock stuff when playing games. The fun has been taken out since most stuff cost money to unlock stuff. The nintendo switch is starting to come out with more classic titles even though it's taking a while for it to happen but it's going to be worth the wait.

The size of the Series S is just good that it's almost portable. If the series S hold us back then how come game developers make games like Celeste, hollow Knight, octopath traveler, ORI, Hades, etc? The series S is fine with those. The problem is that the developers are holding us back. @@fenrirsfolly92 my point stands. Series X isn't worth porting for. 8M users that game on gamepass isn't worth any developers time or money. Series S is the only reason Xbox is getting a GTA 6 port. Wii U and dreamcast sold more than series X to put it in perspective.

A lot of people only upgraded from one or one s to series s as it was cheaper and they wouldn't have bought series x and stayed in the last gen 😅

ps4 is holding back a bunch of titles too, which arguably sucks more since its a last gen console. at least the series s is current gen so many games keep having to be developed with ps4 compatibility and it actively hurts performance of new games

Hey I have a series X and I mostly play game pass games. It’s too damn expensive to buy every single game that comes out or every single game that I wanna play Also I’m grandfathered in so I only pay $60 a year for game pass. Up until I miss a payment anyway but I can’t because it’s on auto pay ha ha ha ha. I ain’t going anywhere.

That little bit near the end where he compared a series s to a steam deck i dont think was the right or smart thing to do. For example Microsoft is demanding feature parity between the X and S consoles. So if the S cant handle lets say split screen but the X can then either no split screen at all or the game doesnt release on xbox at all. The steam deck isnt a console, its a linux computer that you hold in your hands. Valve isnt demanding feature parity with other pcs. Like for example a game has raytracing, steam deck cant handle that but a high end desktop pc with like a 3070/80 and better can. The game still releases and doesnt get fucked by the less powerful computer. Also whose playing split screen on a steam deck.

What Microsoft should have done is make the Xbox Series S the equivalent of the Xbox 360 E, a last minute revision that is just to get people into the Xbox family without spending to much money.

Ss is great but because of it i as SX user have inferior experience from both 3rd party and first party. Even that MS is not utilizing SX and giving us undercooked 30fps gaming is a big problem for me

the major flaw of the Series S is that it gave developers unessessary more work by not giving it the same amount of VRAM as the X. Vram is is the cheapest way to make a game look better(textures) and by making both devices have different capacities, devs have to have the added time optimizing assets and textures for vram capacity reasons which could have been avoided on the get go.

I feel like this whole conversation of the work related to optimization will go away with the pushes toward AI tools in gaming development. Let the robots do that work.

If MS had put in 12 GB of RAM instead of 10GB, I think a lot of the issues developers had would have gone away, if they'd put if at 1850mhz like the Series X, that little more performance would have also helped, but it's the RAM that appears to be the biggest issue for the devs.

I am just reiterating what others are saying. Use a performance mode (Series S), and a quality mode (series x). If we can do this on PC, we should be able to do this on console. When we look at the hardware of Xbox Series and PS5, we are seeing a midrange PC. Yes, a bit modified hardware, but ultimately these are just PC's with specialized OSs for streamlined functionality. I honestly agree that the devs just don't want to, and that is just BAD business practice. And no, Xbox isn't dying. Game Pass is where the real money is at, the consoles are just something to put their foot in the market. I also keep saying that the Series S should become a portable/dockable Xbox Handheld (Xbox Series H?)! That is money on the table, and would honestly justify the idea behind the weaker hardware. Microsoft would seriously see Series X honest go out and drop another 300 on a portable system. I know I would.

As an owner of BOTH the Series X and Series S these arguments are mostly BS. The S is the perfect traveling companion for traveling for the summer..or kids going on a trio for holidays which is what we use ours for. Literally the console, controller, and 2 cords and you're on the way.

I'm so so tired of this discussion. These same developers also write games for the Nintendo Switch! I currently own an Xbox One and an Xbox Series X. I traded in my Xbox Series S to buy my X. Why didn't I just buy a Series X to begin with? Covid-19! That is also left out of the discussion! Even legitimate sellers took advantage of consumers to scam us out of money to Xbox SeriesX and/or PS5! Why doesn't anyone not bring this up?

Ever since Play Station 2 and Xbox, Sony has always been on top. It's never even been a discussion on the superior console. Plus Xbox changing the Xbox Live and Gamepass prices/tiers adding an even cheaper tier that gives you less and makes Microsoft more. PC gaming is superiour, and you don't need a damn 4090. I've got a 4060 Ti and I'm hitting my frame rate cap @165 FPS. Find me a console that can hit 60 constantly... never mind 165.

Y'all really underestimate The importance of a disk drive. Series X is sooo much better and you can make up the price difference with the game savings easily. You can save so much money purchasing used games or even new games at discount/on sale and actually own them. I usually buy games around $5 to $20. And yes I have game pass but the amount of games you can get on the used or on sale market is ridiculous on disc based games. Far more choices than GamePass too. Support your local video game store. Physical media is totally important to having quality assurance and games lasting more than 2 weeks from release like these screw-ups from Sony which are downright embarrassing. Can we also talk about how Sony has absolutely no exclusives like they did for the ps4 and PS3. They just keep remaking the same games in quote" remasters. It's an annoying junk tactic. I bought a PS5 and expected good games and I got hardly anything besides God of war Ragnarok and Spider-Man. 2. Why is this a trend for them?

Series s is a good console I can see in the future games will be made standard (series s) or a larger game and or better optimization series x like a pro version of the game, also possibly boosting sales for the better console for more content/better optimization
