If I ever get the money, I'm going to buy a mall that's in decent condition and turn it into something like no other mall. One section will look like it's from the 1950's, inside and out of everything, the other section will be 1960's and the third will be 1970's. All of the decor, signs, lights, light poles, tiles, colors, vintage video arcades, fashion shows from each period, employees dressing up for the eras, selling vintage items in the stores for each area, the outside will have vintage entrances and signs too, have a early to mid 60's restaurant, early to mid 70's movie theater and vintage 50's cars on display. And every Christmas, there will be vintage decorations. And one section of the mall will be modern. Would you go to a mall that looked like that? Music of each period will be playing in their sections too.

I'm 21 and say up until a few years back, it was still a popular place. Everyone in high school used to hang out there. There is also a wierd half outdoor half enclosed mall that has been dying since the other was build around the 80s,

6:42 Is probably my favorite shot you've ever taken in a dead mall. I feel like I could just drift away from existence and find myself here. It's eerie and creepy yet oddly comforting. Like it shouldn't exist at all, and yet it does. And the Vaporwave to add to the scene just fits perfectly. This is honeslty one of my favorite liminal spaces I've ever witnessed. Thank you for doing what you do.

This is seriously one of my favorite videos. It's like this place was frozen in time and just remains in this purgatory. I went up here myself a few months ago and it looks like most of the doors were sealed up after some kids got in and vandalized the place, its a shame. I would love to drive up here again and get some video footage or at least pictures before they decide to tear it down or whatever they have planned. I'm surprised you even found a way in. Love your work, keep it up.

The reason the power is back on is because the people who own the mall currently are trying to sell it, that's also why it looks a bit cleaner than before. This mall like a year after it closed was trashed and full of glass from the jewelry stores.

I wish malls would play the old 70's/80's mall music instead of modern pop and hip hop and rock.....mall music is more relaxing to shop to imo.....another great video dan! Sad to see malls like this though, big empty lifeless buildings after a lifetime of being open and generations of teens hanging out, they just die and nobody tries to reopen them or at least replace them with a more modern shopping plaza. Id love to visit an older mall that hasn't been remodeled yet or even one that died but is in this good of condition!

+NoMooreMercy Right? I "grew up" at this mall too. It's so surreal whenever I see a video of it now. I didn't even know it had closed (I'd moved away to Boston) until I saw a video of it a few months ago. For me it wasn't the Hoyts, even though I saw most of my theater movies there until the new stadium seating place opened up near FSK mall, it was the Waldenbooks. :'( And I seriously don't want to think about how many quarters I blew with friends playing Gauntlet at Pocket Change. Shit, now I feel old.

+arianasilver I still live in Frederick, actually not far from the FSK Mall and the only thing left at this mall is Boscov's & Home Depot. I was introduced to Mortal Kombat at that Pocket Change I used to sink so many quarters into that machine, lol. I actually work on route 40 and the entire strip has become so run-down, it's a hotbed for crime. I remember it being so much different in the 90s.

Yeah, I've had friends back home tell me that the Golden Mile is run-down and completely different now. That's a shame, really. I guess because all the new businesses and nicer housing were going in out by the FSK. I used to love eating at that diner on the strip near the mile. Mountainview? I can't remember the name! It was next to ChiChis, I think lol

This is still one of my absolutely favorite videos of yours! Dan, it just occurred to me the reason that the power might still be on in this dead mall... my personal opinion is the reason the power is still on in the mall, and it is somewhat accessible, is that it seems that the current owners of the mall would like the mall to Burn Down. In the video you made with Josh, he mentioned that the owners of the mall are waiting for the mall to sort of 'fall down' so that they can replace it with a Wall Mart. Also you, Dan, happened to mention that, with the dead tree being left in the closed store, that "one match could light the whole place on fire" My guess is that the current owners of the mall would like for the whole place to burn down do to and electrical fire, and then collect the insurance money, which would cover the costs of tearing down the mall and removing it. Just my thoughts.

Omg, ME TOO!!! Except with abandoned malls. As a child I used to dream of empty malls, and secret corridors of old and outdated decor etc. Walls that hid secret rooms of closed down stores and restaurants etc. And this was in the 80's and early 90's--long before anyone could have ever even forseen all of these mall closures! So trippy! I'm glad to finally know that someone else understands!!! Will you be my friend, lol?

Dan, this post apocalyptic vision is your best work EVER. It took real balls to break into an abandoned mall (that still had a power feed) and take some of the most haunting visuals that I have ever seen. Beautiful but deeply somber at the same time. It's the fule of my nightmares because I love malls to my core. Amazing stuff.

Hi Dan, I've been watching many of your videos firstly just out of curiosity, but now I can't believe what I'm seeing in utter amazement. I don't know if deserted shopping malls are an American thing, but I've never seen anything like this in Australia. The closest to anything like this was the Hurstville Super Centre which opened in 1964 and enjoyed its best years during the 1980s and 1990s. It started decaying during 2003 into 2004, but immediately the remaining shops were asked to leave as then the entire centre was completely overhauled during 2007, and now under the new configuration of Hurstville Central is thriving again. I would expect something like that would attract undesirables, hence if it is no longer viable, one would expect the local authorities / investors to demolish it and turn it into some sort of park wreck area. I can't believe that deserted mall still has the electricity going and all; just totally mad!

Fantastic video! The store at 6:30 was a Camelot Music. I worked at one from 1993 to 1994. Our Camelot closed in 1998 and then became something called Baskets of Blessings. They sold candles and old-timey furniture and signs. It closed two years ago. I got to go in the store this year. The original Camelot carpet is still there. The blue neon snaking across the ceiling still works!

Cool story here ! My grandmother actually came up with the name for Payless. In her town they did a contest on what the should call this new shoe store and my grand ma being competitive XD took it upon her self to think day and night about the name. She descided Payless because she was sick of buying shoes at such a high price ! Of course being a corporate company she got absolutely no credit but it's still a cool story !

This is pretty weird... What a strange thing to lie about especially being so easily verified. According to their wiki(en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payless_ShoeSource#Key_dates) they had many names prior to Payless which was chosen 22years after the opening of the first "volume distributors". Which was then named "volume shoe corporation" before being called "Payless shoes source". Either your grandma lied to you or you really care about KZbin thumbs for some reason.

This is my favorite video in the Dead Mall Series thus far (even more than Rolling Hills). I love the creepy background music. The Xmas mannequins were disturbing. That first one looked like a hobo...with dead eyes. The second one made me jump! I actually thought the same thing about the giant pine cone ornaments (alien pods)...just before you said it. Do you know what store the blue neon wave used to be in? That was amazing. Thanks for the great series!

You could get hurt there....tripping over something....falling down somewhere or get hit by something....and nobody is with you then, to help you. And also, there could be other people inside this buildings and maybe there´re not that friendly Please take care of yourself.
