Don't feel so sad, y'all. It turns out that that person (or people) who decorated the tree decorated it not only for themselves to see, but also for Dan and the 100k+ viewers that have watched this video. Not every dead mall Christmas tree gets that kind of exposure.

When I was little, in the mid to late 2000s, my Dad would take my little brother and I to the Global Mall, then called the Hickory Hollow Mall. We would play games in the arcade there, which - in hindsight - was a clear holdover from the 80s. We would eat food and play on the plastic playground in the center of the food court. We even made up some silly tradition of running up and jumping off this little cement ramp outside the Sears. And in those days, the place was consistently packed with people. To viewers it may seem like it was just another mall, but for us it was a wondrous place. Then when my parents divorced, we weren't really around my Dad enough to be able to go there anymore. At about the same time it started transitioning into Global Mall. By the time I got back there, it was almost unrecognizable (as shown in the video.) Still, I wasn't old enough then to really feel nostalgia for those very early days when we used to go, so I didn't appreciate the opportunity I had. Now, it's too late. The place is closed for good. So thank you Dan Bell, for helping me remember those better times. I never thought I would be able to see the place again, but now there will always be this video, at least.

Yes being as young as you are you certainly missed the Hey dey of the shopping Mall. I remember them as a kid back in the 80s & 90s the places would be rammed wall to wall, no spaces in the car parks and around Christmas, Thanks Giving etc it was Ridiculous. But those were years way before the internet, never mind online shopping, EBay & Amazon etc. Sad to see these relics from yesteryear so dead and empty.

it feels a whole lot more innocent, at least it feels that way. vapid, like the barbie twins themselves. but sometimes you want the fake plastic, pleasant experience. they used to keep them clean and you had a presumption of safety. real funny when you realize the history of malls, how the man who came up with the concept would have been horrified at the consumerist centric vision of the mall of yesteryear. and now we're kind of watching those who survive falling more in line with something closer to his vision of the space. everything is a flat circle, ect.

The Palm Beach Mall, in West Palm Beach, FL, was an icon of my youth. It eventually went the way of all the other malls Dan showcases. They tore it down and built an outlet mall, complete with the usual anchors (HomeGoods, PartyCity, Ross, etc) and it is thriving. Strange that the existing mall died, but a new one built in the same exact space is alive and well.

Outside “malls” are replacing these. I’ve seen stores normally seen in regular malls only to see them leave and relocating to these type of settings. Outside malls have been taking over since the '90s. So glad you’re back! These are all so incredible. I used to frequent Hickory Hollow back when it was Hickory Hollow, and you could barely walk around with all the people about. It’s spooky seeing it like this now.

Thank you for visiting Hickory Hollow!! I loved this place during the late 90s/ early 2000s. I have so many memories here. I used to work at the Claire’s and remember when it would be packed. It’s sad to see it abandoned and creepy looking. I hope it can make a comeback as a community center.

Awesome to see some more new Dead Mall content Dan , sad to see what some of these malls have become now , sure its easier to buy anything at a click of a mouse now but something feels cold about it , was a experience to go to a mall back in the day and to talk to someone about a product before you bought it in person . Then maybe go look at other shops and grab something at the food court .

Hey Dan! Glad you're feeling better man. Looking forward to this one! You're one of my favorite content creators on KZbin. If it weren't for your channel I would have never found urban exploration or any of those types of channels (seriously, you were the first channel I ever picked up, I recall the late evenings in summer, binge watching your content and being creeped out at the places you would explore, ahh, good memories) All the stuff you put out is so entertaining to watch and I'm glad you feel well enough to share with all of us again. Stay strong Dan, you are loved and appreciated. ------------- Also wanted to add this to my comment, but I remember when you came to my city and went inside of Rolling Acres Mall. I remember my friend told me about it then I had read about it in my local paper. I've been inside that mall before back when it wasn't completely destroyed and taken over by nature. It's now completely demolished and a giant Amazon center takes up the entirety of that space. Every building that was around that mall has been demolished and a massive Amazon warehouse is in its place. You really did capture a piece of history, history of my town and where I grew up, it's all we have of that place now. The Dead Mall Series is so great!

Because of you we get to see the beautiful Christmas tree. I’m so glad my Arrowhead mall in Glendale, AZ. Is alive on life support. So many people moving into Phoenix. Homes are out of sight and apartments. This is really surreal to see. Damn social media.

That Global Mall reminds me of my childhood mall, Echelon Mall in NJ (now Voorhees Town Center). They spent a metric ton of money renovating the place and making it a “lifestyle center” only for it to stay dead 15 years later… Glad the new owner of Global Mall at least realizes that it will never be a mall again.

Glad to see that you are back! The Global Mall (Hickory Hollow Mall) used to be one of the most popular malls in Nashville in the 80s and 90s. Was really crowded at Christmas time. I didn’t even realize that the building itself was still open and you are able to go in there!

I'm genuinely amazed that the old Hickory Hollow mall is still standing. That place has Been dead for like 20 years. I used to work at the old Carmike theater beside it (which is now an AMC) and it looked about the same as back when I was there.

@@mercurymist9240 it does! It is currently an AMC 8 theater location. The exterior is pretty much the exact same since its Carmike days in the 90s. But it's still kicking after all these years!

absolutely love this vid!! seeing the sunshine mall unlocked a core memory from my childhood. its been a very long time since i’ve been there due to moving away when i was a kid. being an adult now, it’s astonishing in a comforting and sad, yet nostalgic way to see that it really hasn’t changed much over the years. well done, thanks so much for this upload:’)

I've followed your dead mall series for a couple of years now. It's always so interesting to see these wide open spaces where you would expect people to be and then it's just depressingly empty. The music you play and your voice are very calming and fit well with the videos. Thanks for putting this series together!
