Thank goodness for Fenom, man. I don't know what these two guys were listening to, but the vocals and the emotion they put into them as well as the chorus makes it obvious why the song was a global hit. I don't expect a song that hits #1 to automatically be good, in fact so much absolute garbage "I'm Too Sexy" "The Macarena" etc. tends to be popular, that I think the reverse is usually true. Thankfully, as the intellectual of the trio, Fenom gets it.

There are many ways to interpret this song. For me it's the opposite--from her perspective he was constantly screwing her over, she had to walk on eggshells around him and it got so bad that she had to go no contact and have her friends pick up all her stuff! That is a fairly extreme breakup so I feel no sympathy for him. He's downplaying his actions, because even by his own admission he never really loved her he just got "used to the loneliness."

@@carlotta4th there are not many ways to interpret the song.. the words clearly state the songs meaning.. she, as a disgruntled lover leaves because of his treatment of her, rightly so, and he in his ignorance feels the desolation of being left to stew in his own juices, and rightly so... the learning curve is there for both parties to experience.. he got served and there was no come back, the man had the bigger part in the song, so I focused on that perspective.. nothing personal..

This song so great cause it makes you feel and think. You don’t get this honesty in overproduced pop „songs“ anymore. No stupid outfits, no stupid choreographies, no autotune, no bling, just simplicity, down to earth heartfelt emotion! absolutely sledgehammer reminiscent...which, in cade anyone doesn't know is THE MOST played music video (*,not video in general, but MUSIC video, specifically - which has an astronomical # of views) and, the reason this is so big of a hit is 1. it's sledgehammer nostalgia, 2. it's catchy, 3. the lyrics aren't too much or not enough that the message is so well expressed, and 4. THAT message resonates with literally EVERYONE, unless you maybe suffer narcissism or antisocial personality disorder (*what we refer to as psychopaths & sociopaths)

I think they were expecting something upbeat that they could really bop to and I think they were surprised that a song that was slow and emotional was so popular. They're probably used to hearing number one songs be pop or dance or hip hop. So when a song that is just emotionally charged and musically expressive it may not hit. Popularity for this song wasn't because it was such an addicted to beat or anything. But it was a song that resonated and really gets you in your feelings.

I know crazy for someone not wanting to be FAMOUS right???? The fame for this song challenged him. Sorry, I am saying it, this is not about the US and YOU and what you think a number one should be, this song is recognized globally for a reason. Please get out of your personal limited space and appreciate what the world appreciates. This song went viral because of the music and for the lyrics of what a complicated breakup looks like. This song is incredible not only musically but lyrically. Really listen to the song and the story they are telling. I am so happy they won grammys for this.

One important part of the lyrics is when she sings “ you said that you could let it go and that I wouldn’t Catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know “ meaning that during their relationship he was still thinking about his ex, even in the video his face looks guilty when she sings it, and she kind of shouts it in his face. It’s a very passionate argument woven into a song.

You have to take the lyrics and relatability into account. The song was this dude talking about his ex like she was way too harsh at the end of their relationship. And then when she comes in, you hear the other side of the story from her. And then singing together was the fight. It's honestly brilliant.

This one hit a the right particular time and blew up. I had been turned on to him by the streaming radio station, Radio Paradise, about two years prior to this being released off his third album. They would play a couple songs from his second album which at that time was only available in Australia / New Zealand. A year after that they released it in the states a year after that and I listened to that album on repeat. So when this came out I was excited to hear it. Became overplayed on quickly though. It does still listen well now. He records in his home playing most instruments himself , some samples and looping tracks. I've seen him live and there are actually more live playing than I actually thought. His voice and talent is amazing live. Regretfully he hasn't released anything more since that I'm aware. His songs "Hearts a Mess" and "Coming Back", were the songs that first drew me in. Then from this album, "Don't Worry We'll Be Watching", "Bronte", and "Eyes Wide Open" are some good tracks.

I'm 67 and was brought up on prog rock and heavy metal / hard rock a lot of recent music (not all) just sounds the same autotune and in the same key no charisma no difference when this came out loved it was different both in key and style and built slowly from the verry simple start to a more complex piece and the lyrics were relatable and the singing had emotion which is what counts in a good track no wonder it went to No one.

Is there any song that isn't a headphone song? You can barely hear anything when comes to instrument and vocal performance. Can also hear when a song sucks a lot, autotune, bad arrangement, etc. It's a appalling to listen to music on a bad headphone or sound box, borderline criminal. The sound engineering and vocal performance, instruments, arrangement, story told, the way you hear both sides, are all spectacular, that's why it was #1.

When I first seen this on KZbin when it first came out I knew it was something special, I even emailed the director and stated that she deserved a Grammy. They stopped giving out Grammy's for directors of videos that year, go figure. Fenom listened to the lyrics and was able to relate, so he could really feel the emotions that this song elicits! The concept I got from the videos was that Goyte was painting his story, then Kimbra was like wait a minute, that's not the way it went down. She therefore takes herself out of his picture, just like she took herself out of his life. Also, the melody is very similar to Baa baa black sheep, so it kind of familiar and that makes it even more catchy, I do belive.

I feel like this a lot.. I think videos can detract from music.. I think something so different artistically from music is one thing but layer video on top and it can be detracting. I see reactions to David Bowie Ashes to Ashes get same reactions. It's why sometimes I wish u just heard audio only then did video or live versions. I get it though, the video is part of your channel.. just unfortunate. one chance for 1st impression.

Does it force someone to allocate full attention and judgment purely on audio. i guess on some level I thinks it's analogous to book vs movie.. In that a book allows reader to fully conceptualize things based on their own interpretation.. Music vs music video falls prey to same. It can be great but can it be a hindrance as well??

@@seangardner9884 I know I heard this song in the video first (and probably every time I've heard it). I was thinking it must have been near the end of MTV actually showing music, but actually I feel pretty certain it was on VH1 instead...and in heavy rotation. That said, I don't even like to watch Reactions when they just listen to the song and an image of the album cover. I always want the visuals as well, or even preferably a live performance. I know what you're saying and it's not a bad analogy, but I feel a much bigger divide between book/film than music/video. Maybe in part because consuming a film takes two hours whereas the book it is adapted from takes two weeks, two months...longer. But the song/video correlation is usually basically the same length (4-5 minutes). There are rare cases when the images of a video are so off-putting that it taints the song for me but they and few and far between. And usually seeing the very same song in a live performance redeems it if it's any good.

I think you guys make good points, but it's a weird song in that it was such a great radio hit that didn't need the video. The video is really cool too, but kind of someone else's art. The single is more of a just classic FU breakup song. Radio was still around and this sounded so diff when it came on it captivated you all the way until the chorus which is fire.
