"Tom Sawyer" is one of Rush's most iconic songs, released in 1981 as the opening track on their album "Moving Pictures." The song is known for its complex structure, innovative use of synthesizers, and thought-provoking lyrics.
"Tom Sawyer" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and has remained one of Rush's most popular and enduring songs. It is often cited as a highlight of their career.
The lyrics were written by drummer Neil Peart in collaboration with Canadian lyricist Pye Dubois. They describe a modern-day rebel and free spirit, drawing loosely on the character of Tom Sawyer from Mark Twain's novels but placing him in a contemporary context.
The music was composed by Geddy Lee (bass, synthesizers, and vocals) and Alex Lifeson (guitar), with a significant input from Neil Peart (drums). The song features a distinctive synthesizer riff, a driving bass line, and intricate drum patterns.

@@billacikalin8108 You're missing the point. The whole point of someone like our host saying, "They're playing live", is that they think we're hearing the band's raw live performance. But we're not. We're hearing the *_produced_* studio version, which may've used sections of music from multiple takes to create it. Just because the video shows clips of them recording the song does NOT mean we're hearing what we would have heard had we been present in the room during the filming of said clips.

Alex Lifeson: “Neil had worked on the lyrics from an idea that had come from a friend of ours, Pye Dubois (Max Webster). He expanded on that whole theme of rebellion and instinct... Most of ['Moving Pictures'] was written by all of us at the same time, in the room jamming with an idea and everybody going from there. What we ended up with was, I think, some of the strongest and most enduring material that we’ve ever written. There are a lot of songs on that record that reached a really high standard... They connected with a bigger audience. But there was also something about the sound of that record that resonated with people.” Neil Peart: "I really think we started to bring it together a bit with 'Permanent Waves', but particularly 'Moving Pictures' and from then on... ['Tom Sawyer'] finds us at a time of such confidence that we were learning to make a song that was only six minutes instead of 12, 15, and use the same standards of arrangement. The drum is so detailed, but when we go into the middle to the odd time part, it was improvised. I got lost and I punched my way out of it and somehow came back to the one. And that improvisation became a new part. It's one of those key parts that I love and it was absolutely a mistake that I just got lucky and got out of."

The biggest drama in Rush that I know of was in 1969 (so it was years prior to Neil even joining after their first album), when Geddy was briefly kicked out of the band (because their manager had some stupid ideas). It became a disaster without Geddy, so they invited him back. Wise move. 😄

It was 1980 and I was 10. They saw us and came out and talked to us about hockey Cause that's what we Canadians do 😂) and we talked about the music they were recording and their cars. Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble. I saw them live in 88 and 03 and they kicked ass. I saw them the second time in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians at the SARS relief concert in Toronto in 2003 and they had us rocking for sure. This is a very deep rabbit hole, gentlemen!! I love their studio stuff but to see them live is something else. These 3 are all masters in their field. When you see them live, you go, how is all this music coming from 3 guys? Geddy Lee is the vocalist, bass player and keys/synth. At times, he does all 3 things on stage at once, (using foot pedals, of course). Alex Lifeson is the guitarist who also uses foot pedals for synth and other sounds. Niel Peart, (pronounced like you would the word, ear). Peart. He is a master percussionist. Anything you can hit with a stick, he's got and he plays it. He writes almost all their lyrics and is know as "The Professor" for his very deep knowledge of wide ranging topics that he puts to song. Not everything is deep - like Tom Sawyer, here is not deep at all. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago from cancer. Id love to request a live song from them called, Working Man. It's in Cleveland in 2011. These guys are well into their 50's at this point and they absolutely blow the roof off of that place. I really hope you to choose to watch it sometime soon. Three of my favorite people since 1981. Caught them 35 times. At least one concert on each tour since 1985. I never left a show disappointed. Well, except that had ended. #rushfamily ❤❤❤ RUSH ON EH!!!

Rush was always clear in their productions. With their creativity and accomplishment, that clarity allowed people to appreciate what they were hearing. It almost hides their complexity, because it is all right there in front of you -- "in plain sight.".

Canadian guy here. Rush was one of my favorites growing up. Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time without a doubt. And Geddy Lee is no slouch on bass either. And they are my one and only claim to fame... I installed Geddy Lee and Alex Lifesons Cell Phones in their car in about 1988. And I was blown away they both drove Volvo 740 Station Wagons. Really nice guys and Alex Lifeson even sat and chatted to me for awhile... And I just gave away my age. Lol

If you ever get the chance to react to video clips of Rush during their “Exit.. Stage Left” concert and react to songs like “Freewill”, “Trees”, “Xanadu”. “YYZ”…you’ll be amazed even more at how much these 3 legends put into their songs and concert…👍😎

@@Derideo totally agree 1000%… and for those that know side B, track/song 1 of Rush’s ‘Moving Pictures’ album, “The Camera Eye” should be played at volume level 11 for maximum enjoyment…👍😎🔥

Xanadu from Exit stage Left live. This is the best live performance you will ever witness. These three are extraordinary musicians and you see that for yourself. And Spirit of Radio studio version.

The vocalist, Geddy Lee, is also the bass player, and also plays keyboards. When he is playing keyboards with his hands, he is usually playing bass pedals with his feet. The amazing guitarist, Alex Lifeson is severely underrated, only because he is in a band with 2 other musical virtuosos'. It is easy to miss how great Alex is because there is so much going on in the music at the same time. The drummer...Neil Peart. One of the best in rock and roll music. Neil also writes the majority of the lyrics in the band. His lyrics are deep, thought-provoking, and relatable. He is a beast, as you saw, behind the drumkit. It is amazing that so much great, imaginative music is coming from just 3 people. And they can recreate every one of their songs live with the same greatness that they create in the studio.

Not everyone knows but Neil wrote most of RUSH songs. He was not a real big people person he spent the majority of his time reading and riding his enduro motorcycle. There’s a great documentary with him going across country on his motorcycle before he passed.

Yeeeeesssssss 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Edit: Corey you looked like me the first time i heard this song, grinning from ear to ear😆 May I suggest your next Rush song be La Villa Strangiato. I think the 1978 or ‘79 video versions will give you best sound. It’s a complete journey through a dream land and not one word is sung the whole song. Just pure musicianship.
