I'm in awe of your ability, not only that the plans are all in your head but how you are building it with no help. Two weeks ago I visited my childhood home. It was for rent & the agent kindly allowed me to look through it. My grandfather built it 74/75 years ago. The inside has had very little change, with the exception of my brother's bedroom is now a toilet & shower. I left 50 years ago & it still had an outside "Dunny" lol. I looked in the linen cupboard & to my utter surprise it still had no bottom shelf & you could see the stumps, there was flooring of sorts so no creatures could get into it. The biggest change was outside. It was an empty block of land apart from a shed. The laundry room was still standing, the cement troughs were still there. When I left there were two big willow tress, a number of sheds,. A chicken coup, huge veggie garden & a fernery. All gone, which brought a lump to my throat. A had a great deal of pride to see what my grandfather had built still standing. An old woman reminiscing. My point I wanted to make is that one day your grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren will also visit the cabins that you have built & say with pride "MY GRANDFATHER, ETC" built this cabin many (75) years ago. I only have my memories to pass onto the generations, they will have your videos to watch. What a blessing for your generations to come. Forgive an old woman her ramblings. God Bless you & yours 🇦🇺🐨✝️🙏🏻✝️♥️♥️♥️♥️😊😊😊😊

Hello Lynne. Your "ramblings" mean the world to me. You took me to your childhood home. I saw, and almost touched it. Thank you for that my dear friend. Your story reminds me of a quote I love, here it is: "When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for the present delight nor for the present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone upon stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that people will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, "See! This our parents did for us." - John Ruskin

Oh Lynne, I loved reading your comment! I could hear your "heart" in your description of your home and how wonderful for you to be able to go and see it. Your words took me on the journey as well. I want to go back and see my grandparents home too. I learned to garden and cook there. They came from Italy in the 40's and I lived with them. They taught me how to make wine, fresh pasta and sausage. Everyone had a job and it was always family first. It was the best years of my childhood. I'm so glad for you to be able to add this final memory of your home to the other wonderful ones that I am sure you have. Best wishes, Ginger

@@gingershaffer2547 thank you so much for your lovely reply. It sounds like you have beautiful memories as well. An amazing thing on the day, which I didn't put in. The family that lived next door to us still live there, the mother died two years ago at the age of 95 & there eldest shifted in after her marriage broke up & looked after parents. I was with a friend who lived across the road from them. We have remained friends since Primary school days. We took the chance that she may be home. It turns out that the younger sister had shifted in. Long story short, we had a lovely catch up with them both & did a lot of reminiscing. It had been over 50 years since we last spoke. We were all very much the same age. They are the only original family still living in the street. A lot of homes have gone & been replaced with town houses. My old home will only be there for approximately 18 months & it too the is going to be pulled down & 3 town houses in its place. So you can see why I didn't put this in the original post, as it would have ended up being a short story. Lol.. cheers from Australia Lynne 🇦🇺🐨♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Rafters and gable ends done. The rest of the roof sheeting done in the next vid. I'm enjoying this a lot. Thanks for posting. I know how much time editing takes. I have to say this. I'm a Virginia country boy, but I have been to Alaska in 1987 and 1989. What small portion of the state I saw was breath taking wonderful. I was most impressed with the toughness and resilience of the hard working people of Alaska. Being a blue collar worker all my life and seeing such type people here diminish greatly. I still appreciate the remembrance of the people I saw and met when there. So that is the reason I enjoy your vids so much. Thanks again.

Your knowledge and skill amaze me. Truly inspiring. Reminds me of when I was a boy and in my teen years, how I used to watch my father craft small additions and such to our home and property. Nothing spectacular, a shed here, a new roof there, but he seemed to me to be a jack of all trades. Could do anything. Working on the house, yard, car, digging ditches, laying pipe. Except electrical, just wouldn't touch it. I would help in any way I could, mostly cheap labor to be honest, but I always felt like I was part of whatever project Dad was working on. And he taught me the value of honest, hard work, and the satisfaction of doing something and doing it well. Then he would tell me stories about my Mom's father and his skills as a bricklayer, how he worked on the construction of the large, hundred-foot industrial smoke stack at the textile mill my Dad worked at in my youth, other large structures he helped construct in the area where I grew up in Maine. These were skills I never really developed or had, and it was humbling to see, to think about how my Dad and Grandfather had such skills and workmanship, how they created something from nothing. These lessons have lasted my entire life, and every success I've had began with this. My Dad amazed me. I believe you and I are of the same age, but your skill, imagination, resourcefulness and confidence remind me of those my Dad and Grandfather had. I appreciate you, your imagination, focus and determination to do the work you do in these videos. More than you know. It brings back great memories, and makes me feel like I'm sharing in something special. Thank you.

I absolutely love your comments my friend. You do seem to be describing my father and grandfather. My grandfather was a genuine cowboy and worked cattle ranches for most of his life. My father was a concrete and stone mason by trade, but he was also an avid builder. He built several log homes back when I was a boy, and I worked with him every chance I got. He loved hard work and valued it almost too much because he always seemed to feel guilty about taking time off. I wish he had though, because the few times we did get a chance to fish or hunt together were so much fun. He had a wonderful love for the outdoors that deeply impacted my own life. Everyday now I can see him in myself, especially as I get older. He passed away about six years ago now. I owe him much. He left some big boots to fill.
@auldersaige69343 жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsMyAlaska I never met either of Grandfather's. Both passed well before I was born. My Dad and I spent many hours trout fishing, brook trout mostly, but some river fishing for pickerel, pike, smallmouth bass. We literally live on the Penobscot River near the textile mill he worked at, it was in my backyard. I'd jump the fence, fish for 8 hours a day in the summers. In the fall/winter, we hunted. Whitetail deer pretty much. For my Dad, hunting was about putting food on the table. Fishing, he LOVED to fish. Solitude. For me, it all was about spending time with my Dad. Not a bad way to live your life. I see my early lifestyle in how you and your family live your lives. You've got it figured out my friend. God Bless you and your family.

It is simple and looks back to a time when we built out of necessity, without everything being closed in and trimmed out as all the houses are today. The "break-up" shots were beautiful! The water, the ice.... By the time you are through with this cabin, my husband is going to say.....okay, that's it, we're going back to Alaska! lol Really enjoyed seeing how you manage to cut everything to perfection with the different saws. I have never seen anything built from the ground up and it's so cool being able to see "how" things are accomplished piece by piece. I love the high ceilings. My husband asked me if the foundation was a floating foundation on pads or did you install piers first? you are up so high, all I could think of was....Gale be nimble, Gale be quick, Gale jumped over the......well, you get what I mean. Lordy, sometimes you scare me! Stella was having a really good time in that snow! love her!
@ThisIsMyAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Good evening Ginger. Thanks so much for watching and I am so glad you are enjoying the project. Say hello to your husband for me. He asked about the foundation, yes, it is a floating pad style of foundation. I excavated about 5 feet of organic soil out from underneath the cabin first though and backfilled it with NFS gravel, so it is sitting on stable ground. There is also positive drainage away from the foundation so everything stays dry too. Take care my friend.

@@ThisIsMyAlaska Thanks for answering back, Dan says "howdy" and great job! I remember how bad the mosquitoes were this time of year in Alaska. For us, our yard is full of deer. That Oregon chain saw is a beast! Nice work my friend...... I'm not sure how in the world you are doing this job mostly by yourself. All the camera angle changes must be time consuming. You really need someone to follow you around with the camera and a faithful associate to help with some of those heavy loads. Cant wait for the next episode!
@ThisIsMyAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Paul. Yes, the camera shots take a lot of time to set up but I enjoy it immensely. To me, creating a good video is as challenging as the work itself and just as important. The work is heavy at times but I like trying to figure out how to move the heavy timbers by myself. Working alone in the woods is a wonderful experience and I would not trade it. See you soon.

Really a valuable job. But I repeat that passion makes a big difference. We will look at you until the inauguration to celebrate with you. Good morning my friend from Italy. One day I want to visit your wonderful country. I am so glad you and your friends are enjoying my cabin project. The upper clerestory windows face due south and are intended to take full advantage of the little sunlight we get during mid winter. They run the full length of the cabin so the full interior should pick up the sun that just gets above the tree tops in December and January. Love you guys a ton. Hugs from Alaska.

Perhaps I missed it but what is the size is the home and any chance you can say where you purchased the logs, where they shipped up there was that costly? been looking for AK land want to do the same thing truck it up and assemble already have one shipping container going to truck it all to where I move. Did you make a video on your foundation and sub floor setup for that area?
@ThisIsMyAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Good morning and thanks for the questions. This is a small cabin. It has 385 sq ft (inside dimensions) and is a single bedroom. It will have all the amenities though, even including a washer/dryer. I am happy to talk about the logs. They were milled by one of the highest rated mills in Alaska. You can visit the website here: Loggingandmilling.com. Tell them I sent you too! I did not make a video of the foundation because I installed it last fall before I started this channel. I am happy to provide you with my sketches and a good description of how I did it though. I hope to have my website up in a couple of weeks and I will be posting information about this build on the website. See you soon, and good luck on your move. What area are you moving to?

Tongue and groove design of this house is ingenious and so simple really, looking to mill my own timber to build my own house, and this has given me many ideas of ways to build we don't really use in Australia. Also like the roof design but wonder how much snow it can take? not something we really have to consider in most parts here. Is that why the large timber sections and ridge, along with different pitches? Also birdsmouths with an angle grinder is a first for me. Cudos on the originality.

On another site building a log cabin, they stopped the logs at the top wall height and built the gable ends from 2x4 framing with additional support for the massive ridge beam. So you basically have two ridge beams?? Which makes it more light-filled and airy?? And with the addition of the second ridge bean the gable end logs are more stabilized??
@ThisIsMyAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Kathleen. On this cabin I wanted the log gable ends to run full height. The lower beam is the summer beam. It carries the weight of the roof on both sides of the ridge. On top of it there is a framed wall with window openings. The beam lookouts you see on each end of the upper roof are only short sections of timber extended out each end of the cabin to carry the fly rafters. The "false" lookouts are cantilevered. They run about 4 feet back into the roof and extend about 2 feet on the outside.

Looking better every week. I was a bit of a mystery there for awhile on the style of roof you were doing but it finally sunk in. Not sure what it's called Are they that common or not? I do like it. Looking forward to the continuation of the build. SteveD
@ThisIsMyAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Steve. This roof profile is called a clerestory. The upper windows face due south and will pick up the winter sun. They are high and the ceiling is a fairly steep pitch so the reflected light should flood the cabin. Lighting is important here. The winters are long and dark. Every little bit helps. Thanks so much for following along. See you soon.
