'Romance Fraud Scammer Killed My Mum' | This Morning

It’s an all too familiar tale, a woman meets the man of her dreams online, who promises her the world only to scam her out of thousands of pounds. For 76 year old Elaine Chamberlain, her alleged scammer 'brainwashed' her into believing they would get married so he could steal her £20,000 life savings before she died with just £120 in the bank and the wedding dress she hoped to wear. Her son Richard joined us in the studio to share Elaine's heartbreaking story.

Of course it is BUT no matter what, she was a willing participant. And that’s what these scammers manipulate people to do. The victim is so convinced that this is real, they can’t see it. It’s so widespread now, especially in the States and Australia and one woman sent over a million dollars and lost her home, pensions she’d cashed in etc.

I taught my step mum about scammers, she gets loads but she see it now, teach your elderly family members.

I don’t know what they hand in other countries but in the US there is adult protective services. It was a different situation when my mom was being taken advantage of. I got really scary with them to get them to back off and reported them every way I could. But it made me sad because my mom missed their small child and she really thought they were her friends.
