12 seconds is all it took for Martyn Smith to stab the two paramedics who were carrying out a concern-for-welfare check at his property, after his mother raised an alarm. One year after the attack and days after Smith’s sentencing of nine years, Deena Evans and Mick Hipgrave join us in the studio to retell the events of that morning and tell us why, despite the attack, they continue to serve as paramedics.

Aussie paramedic Steven Tougher was fatally stabbed yesterday in the back of the Ambulance, at McDonalds on a coffee break just before they finished their night shift. Just grabbing a cuppa before going home. Witnessed by his paramedic partner who fought to save him. My love & strength to these two paramedics who I’ sure deal with ongoing trauma.

Thank G-d they survived. I just wanted to hug that poor darling woman. Here in Sydney we have just lost a 29 year old paramedic. Senselessly stabbed while he and his duty partner were just having a break at McDonalds after having delivered a patient to hospital. The partner hit their distress alarm bringing police and other ambos within minutes. Sadly the young man died during trauma surgery. He was had been on the job 12 months, a dream he held since 5 years old! He was recently married with a baby and another due in a couple of months that he was taking paternity leave for. Just so incredibly sad - a senseless act of vulgarity.

9 Years for two counts of attempt murder, that's shocking, he should have been given double.

I’m a Paramedic in the north of England and I was attacked with a knife a few years ago, I ended up being pulled from the cab but was kept in by my seatbelt, I managed to hit the accelerator and drive down the road, police arrive and tasered the guy. He got a conditional discharge and I was awarded £15 victim compensation from the courts. It’s a joke, I lost the love for the job that day and have reduced my working hours as a result. We lose good Paramedics to people like these, there needs to be tougher sentences. Also just to get off my chest, the police rarely come to our assistance and will ridicule us for calling for them for someone brandishing a knife when they have the protection of body armour and CS/ PAVA etc. We have an oxygen cylinder or a Stryker pole if we are lucky.

I have a genetic disorder which has caused multiple chronic illnesses and pain, when I’m barely with it and only feeling agony, seeing the ambulance officers is such a comfort, I thank them with all my being. They really are angels on earth

I was lured into a house with my partner in Australia by a guy who stabbed his partner. He told us she stabbed herself and he removed the knife. We went in and he trapped us in the back of the house and assaulted my partner and attempted to stab both of us. We ran, he chased us with a kitchen knife to the ambulance. After this we ended up doing another 12 cases and 16+ hour night shift. Can people now understand why the average career span for paramedics in Australia is 5 years.

These two are the worst interviewers ever. Eamon interrupting with no sense of tact. Both of them brow beating these traumatised paramedics. Awful.

Get a grip, no browbeating here. No, they're not the best interviewers, but that is somewhat this couple's appeal, no professional gloss.

I came for a similar comment, this man kept interrupting every time at some point even the lady interviewer looked a bit put off by it.He also seemed to not even understand the same thing he was conducting an interview for .smh .they just both interrupt and dont listen well

i've been watching the new season of inside the ambulance that is being uploaded to the real responders youtube channel , a series i absolutely love and as soon as i saw both mick and deena in the thumbnail and the title "i knew i was dying stabbed paramedics" that shook me to the fucking core cause they are my favorite ones out of the west midlands ambulance service and i never knew this happened to them and it's just horrifying

I’ve watched A&E and I’ve seen these two at work before this ever happened and I quite like them(i’m so emotional over what happened to them that I’m crying.😭) I just hope that they’re doing OK now.🥰🥰🤗🤗 What an awful thing to happen to people that are there to help you with your health to get you better. I know mental health is quite bad, but this guy just had depression and he did this. You don’t do that. I suffer from depression and I would never ever think of that.

This is why our law enforcement are armed with fire arms. He would have been shot by police and not a taser. I was a paramedic for 10 years and never had a knife or a gun pulled on us. I have had 2 confused patients where 1 had a steak knife I found under a pillow so I removed that and another man who was having low blood sugar and very confused had a gun in his pocket. We got lucky. Gave him sugar through an IV and he was alert. Had another an OD on narcotics in prison and he got violent and took 5 of us to restrain him. Even a guard had him in a headlock and I even found the drugs since he did a terrible job hiding it.

Main question for me is WHY were the Paramedics (Who don't wear stab vests) the first ones in rather than Police who DO wear stab vests. I can't understand that.

This is definitely wrong however I also don’t agree with cameras in the back of the ambulance pointing to the bed where the patient will be sitting. At the end of the day it could be an elderly or disabled person in a nightly it could be someone whose disclosed personal information not realizing they’re being recorded and so on
