One item on the AC coil freezing, sometime people forget or prefer not to put a filter. Consequently all that particles end up attaching into the coil itself restricting the air flow.

Swampcooler, simple fix. Or copper coil into a container you refill with ice water every 4 to 6 hours. Freeze blocks for free, using half of a container or OJ or milk jug in a freezer everybody has running already. 4 container half gallon blocks is all it takes and most people have a space in the freezer all year.

Also their system relies on internet servers for weather... as a tech grad, that has easily 2 plus points of error.. and then you have an unsmart house if internet, servers, or power is out.

If you want to be effecient, get a ductless minisplit and loads of insulation, don't skip the AC. Fujitsu makes a minisplit heat pump with a seer of 33.1 33.1! Central is is like 14, maybe 18. Window AC units are like 13.
@dertythegrower3 жыл бұрын
Mitsubishi also.. if you look at huge city videos in asia.. its the most used btand and reliable. Also weed growers have used them in america, for a decade heh
@Bob_Lob_Law3 жыл бұрын
@@dertythegrower Mitsubishi is also good. Personally, I live in a very cold climate, and Fujitsu has a lower operating temps with no hard cutoff. I hear Mitsubishi shuts off completely at it's minimum temp. I saw a list of "most efficient heat pumps 2020" from a traditional american installer. It was awful, only had names like Goodman, York, Trane, etc. These brands suck, they are still using single or multi speed compressors when Fujitsu and Mitsubishi are using inverters. The best unit on the list had a seer of 20. Embarrassing, but it seems like most installers here don't know about Mitsubishi or Fujitsu for some reason.

This Old House has my vote as the most valuable content on television in the past 40 years. The older an episode gets, the more valuable it becomes. I'm renovating my home after struggling with workers. If I have to trust an idiot, it will be my own idiot; at least I know my idiot isn't drunk or high on drugs. You have a video for everything except an in depth video on old floor tile mud beds (or mortar beds depending who you ask). Thanks for the help ❤

The only thing about the whole house fan is it could pull in humidity, depending on what part of the country you're in. I live in N.C and our summers are extremely humid and I had a whole house fan and when we would run it everything in the house would be wet. So turns out we couldn't run it in the summer at all. But sounds as you know what will & won't work for your situation, good luck & that's a beautiful house.

I really like that for the first time I can remember an exploration of Smart Home technology that is meant for non-tech head people or those specifically looking into implementing it *now* is addressing privacy concerns. As I have been building out my own Smart Home - and now looking into changing it up specifically because of privacy concerns - it has been front and center of all of my choices. I *STRONGLY* feel that TOH (and ATOH) would be doing your viewers a HUGE favor by exploring into these issues deeper.

Its better to have an ac unit running constantly all day rather than on and off constantly is what he's saying. Perfect Insulation would allow the unit to stay off for an hour on the hottest day and that would be fine
@davidmiedema29503 жыл бұрын
No what he's saying is that short cycleing an ac unit causes humidity and icing issues, and that oversizing your unit too much causes too much short cycleing. So, size ir so that it can keep up at 100% (really 80-90%) duty cycle on the hottest day of the year.

I don't think of myself as a luddite, but I am very leery of "smart" security that might be vulnerable to being hacked, or gamed in some way. I may be willing to trade some privacy for some convenience, but I'm not willing to trade security. Convenience is over-rated, in my opinion.

instead of "smart" home technology just open the windows manually and switch on the fan. This eliminates the technological nightmare when a "system" fails; the more complex a system the more chance for failure. Instead of "smart" technology, use "smart" residents.
@scotttovey3 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the lack of security in that system. As long as it is hotter inside than outside; the windows will remain open inviting thieves to come in and take as much as they wish.

Sounds like a dumb house. Where will the cool air come from in the hot summer days. wishful thinking and will not work. try that in Florida in high humidity. The heated floors another wishful idea with a major flaw. I understand floor heating takes a day and half to heat the house. Pretty cold the first day or so and by that time. I day later it may be warmer now you are hot. Not well thought out per the complaints I have heard.
